Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a tiler when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a tiler in your area, stay at least 6 feet away from worker(s), don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payment platforms instead of cash or a check. During the consultation, put a plan together to help ensure everyone's safety.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Jarek was on time, worked fast and did quality tile work. He upgraded our bathtub with white subway tile, replaced the leaking faucet, updated our kitchen with white subway tile backsplash and even helped us replace and re-grout some damaged floor tiles. Just what we needed to get our house ready to sell!!

Arturo and his crew did a good job with the actual tiling - the tile work looks great. However, there were some missed details (a couple tiles cut too short so there was a gap between the tile end and the floorboard, unfinished work that I had completed by a trim professional, and the demo work yielded a lot more wall damage than I had anticipated based on previous experiences with other crews.

Tile work turned out great. Only complaint was that I had to clean up all the tile scraps and trash. Just make sure to get that included in pricing.

JM Remodeling did a fantastic job helping to re-tile my bathroom shower. We personally did the demolition of the old shower area and purchased the tile we desired to have put up. We then had JM Remodeling come in and increase the footprint of the shower floor, hang new cement board and the tile. It is absolutely stunning and we could not be happier. Thank you!

Arturo and his crew were a pleasure to work with! I had contacted him on a Wednesday, he came out for a tiling estimate on Friday, started the job on Tuesday, and completed the job by the following Friday. Not only was his bid very reasonable, the quality of the tile work was great and he stuck to his stated timeline. I will definitely be using him again for future tiling work!

Pedro and his team were awesome and I would highly recommend JMI tile- they were always quick to respond and had a price that could not be beaten! Their work was quality and when I had some plumbing issue come up, Pedro helped me figure out the best and quickest solution. (he could have ignored the problems and kept tiling, but that's not the type of guy he is!) The two bathrooms they re-tiled look amazing and I hope yours project will too :)

Chris did a terrible job with our tile and when I pointed out the issues - he vanished. Did not respond to calls or text. I am hiring someone and paying them 4X the amount to get this redone and fixed. I’d not recommend hiring him for any project, especially tiles

Chris bid on a job I posted to tile my kitchen back splash. I called him the evening he put the bid in, negotiated the price and scheduled with him to show up the next morning. He arrived 10 minutes early and got to work straightaway. It took him about 4 hours the first day, and he returned the second day (again, a few minutes early) to do the grouting, which took a couple hours more. The tile saw was set up in my front yard and he cleaned up any dust and residue from the cut tiles. After the grouting, there was of course some film on the tiles that needed to be wiped off after several hours, but Chris made me aware of it and let me know how to clean it. The rest of the work area was tidied up and cleaned. I was impressed by the efficiency of the work Chris did. I guess it helped that I had all the materials on site, and he worked with what I had. He is a professional and his work reflects that. The simple white ceramic tiles I chose, along with a glass tile accent strip would show any flaws or uneven spacing, but they look perfect. Chris was courteous and professional in his demeanor and I appreciate the excellent work he did. I will contact him again for any tile work I have.
