We were in a unique situation in that we were moving across the country and needed a quick last minute sitter for our cat while we drove our furniture/stuff out to Denver. The services were great - lots of professionals and very informative. They sent updates on the first and last days to show our kitty was doing well and they even left a report card for our cat when we got home (he got an A+ by the way!) - a really unique business structure. I've used many cat sitters and this was by far the most organized system I've seen with great people. I highly recommend them and I will be using them again.

My husband and I had an incredible experience with Live Green Denver Pet Sitters. Both Moksha and JT were fabulous. They took such good care of our cat Hepburn while we were gone for 10 days on holiday. Daily, we received an email and short video of Hepburn. It was so nice to see my kitty everyday. JT and Moksha did exactly what we asked them too do. I have found my cat sitters for life. They are the best!!! Thank you Moksha and JT. Sincerely, Janet and Sandy Rudolph

Paw N Claws began pet sitting for me in 2013. As a single professional, I needed someone to let my dogs out during the day. They were referred to me by my former pet sitter who retired. They are reliable, cost competitive and you can tell they just love animals. When my dog had medical issues, they gave me some pointers and referred me to my vet - whom I love. I highly recommend them.

Jennifer Lind is the first person I call for pet-sitting, and for any help with animals. She is knowledgeable and experienced, and seems to bond well with every living creature. She raised her incredible horse from the time he was a tiny foal and has a bond with him that is the stuff of young girls' dreams. Each time I speak with Jennifer, she has a new animal experience to share. She and her family recently rescued and raised baby squirrels. Jen has currently been raising goats that follow her around outside. When our little dog was missing, we called Jen to help search for her on her horse. Jen discovered a buck with his antlers thoroughly tangled in our rope hammock! We rounded up some wrangler-types to help cut the buck's antlers loose. In the midst of the procedure, someone needed to sit on the buck to keep him still on the ground while others cut through the woven ropes of the hammock. The person who straddled that buck was, of course, Jennifer. Jen is a kind and compassionate young lady. She is polite and ever willing to help and to go the extra mile. She has determination and follow-through, the ability and the integrity to get the job done. She knows what she's doing, she loves what she's doing, and she gets the job done well. I have had much experience with Jennifer Lind and couldn't recommend her more highly.

Paws United is the best pet sitting service I have used. They are all very friendly and very reliable. I never worry about my dogs being taken care of. If they say they are going to be there, they are going to be there and do the best work possible. There are many great pet sitters out there but this is the one that is best for us.

Tara is one of the best instructors I've ridden with and is especially amazing on the training side. She has a ton of expertise with green horses and is is an all-around excellent horsewoman. Cottonwood offers a great, diverse lesson program; a warm, family-friendly atmosphere; a gorgeous cross country course and some of the BEST scenery and trails around. We board our young horse there and could not be happier.

Best pet sitter ever! Lori took great care of my cats while we were away. Played with them, sent me updates - she is so wonderful with Belle and Beau - they were visibly happier when we returned. Funny, she takes better care of animals over most child care providers! My plants always survive my absence and litter boxes are clean. Lori offers peace of mind to pet lovers. I highly recommend her as a pet/house sitter … you will not be disappointed! Janet Phillips Wheat Ridge, Colorado

Katie amazed me from day one with her knowledge and understanding of horses, patience with questions, and the effort she puts into fully interpreting and explaining horse behavior and effective riding/training techniques. I have learned more in 3 sessions here than I have in almost a year of work at a highly esteemed barn. I cannot give enough praise to Katie's care, compassion, and genuinely good attitude toward both her horses and her clients.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

      • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
      • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
        • 45-minute visit: $28.
        • 60-minute visit: $32.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
        • 12 hours: $100.
        • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
