Lea R. says, "Sarah is absolutely a dream to work with! We didn't take choosing an officiant for our wedding (April 2019) lightly. It was very important to us to have someone we connected with, who understood us as a couple and aligned with our personal belief and morals. From the very beginning e-mails with Sarah it felt like we were old friends. She is professional and also personable. She got to know us as a couple and as individuals. We decided we wanted to craft our own unique ceremony and write our own vows. We weren't entirely sure HOW to craft a ceremony BUT Sarah gives you many ideas to include to make it your very own. We aren't religious people but wanted to include our own take on Hindu traditions. (My husband's family is rooted in India.) We also wanted a way to include our 3 children as part of our ceremony as well. Sarah has a very in depth questionnaire for yourself, your partner AND your close friends and family. (This part is so fun because we wanted to be surprised during our ceremony about what our loved ones had to say about us!) The process of crafting our ceremony with Sarah's guidance brought us closer as a couple- forcing us to look deeper into our relationship and ourselves. It was a very vulnerable yet beautiful experience- like falling in love all over again. During this entire process we had several skype meetings and met twice in person to go over all the details of exactly how our wedding ceremony would be preformed. She wove in all of our ideas together to come up with a ceremony that was true and unique to us as a couple. Sarah also offers a pre-martial counseling session with her services. She gives honest and un-biased advice during this process and it felt really good to set the wedding planning aside and just express our feelings about our relationship. WEDDING DAY! Sarah prints and brings your ceremony script (and vows) so this isn't something you even have to think about on your wedding day. Sarah a special gift for creating the space, grounding and setting the tone for your wedding day. She also gathers your wedding party and gives them directions and guidance on where to stand, walk etc. ( This is all discussed beforehand and she executes it flawlessly when the day comes! Just trust her!!!) She includes your guests and wedding party as a part of your ceremony- as they are all your community. She tells your love story crafted from the info you, your partner and your loved ones gave her. My favorite part of our ceremony was an idea Sarah gave us to include all of our guests, which was a ring warming. Our rings were passed through every single person (110- 120) and they each took a moment to infuse our rings with their own well wishes, love and blessings. Our guests LOVED that they were all included in such a beautiful and meaningful way. We had so many compliments on our ceremony, everyone kept saying it was the most beautiful and unique ceremony they've ever been to! That they were so engaged in what was happening and how eloquently our love story was told. There wasn't a dry eye in the crowd and the entire ceremony was the most surreal moment of my life. Sarah hung around a little while during our reception to say hello and get to know our friends and family as well. We couldn't have found a better person to officiate our day, truly! We are so honored to have had her. We look forward to working with her throughout our marriage as our friend and counselor."See more

Sierra H. says, "I hired Dawn to be our day-of coordinator, but somewhere along the way, she became so much more than that. From our very first conversations months before the wedding, I knew I was in incredibly capable hands. Dawn asked questions I didn’t even know I needed to be thinking about. Her experience shows in the way she understands the entire flow of a wedding day — what decisions need to be made, what details need to be considered, what could go wrong, and how all of those moving pieces need to come together. But what made Dawn truly special was how much she cared about making sure our wedding still felt like ours. Throughout the planning process, she kept asking me, “What do you care about?” When plans changed or the timeline needed to be reworked, she always brought me back to that question. For me, two of those things were getting our sunset photos and actually having time to be present with my family. She reworked our timeline multiple times to protect those moments and make sure the things that mattered most to me didn’t get lost in everything else. Dawn also became an incredible safe space for me. Weddings can come with emotions, family dynamics, tension and unexpected moments, and there were times when I simply needed someone I trusted to talk things through with. She was calm, reassuring, honest and always helped me figure out the next step. Then, fairly late in the game, we asked Dawn to take on another pretty important job — officiating our wedding! She absolutely knocked it out of the park. She gave us so many options to help build a ceremony that felt right for us, from readings and poems to verses and thoughtful questions about our relationship. She took all of that and told our story in a way that was incredibly personal and specific to us. It never felt like a generic wedding ceremony with our names dropped into it. It felt like our story. Our family loved her. Our wedding party loved her. The people helping us set up loved her. We did a lot of our wedding ourselves, and I trusted Dawn completely to take everything we had worked so hard on and run the show so that I could finally stop managing it and just be the bride. I thought I was hiring a day-of coordinator. What I ended up with was an incredible coordinator, a beautiful officiant, a trusted sounding board and, genuinely, a new friend. I cannot recommend Dawn enough. 🖤"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
