Project: New window install in garage area. This entailed cutting a new opening, framing, trim work, caulking and adding flashing above the window. Josue did an outstanding job installing our new window. I was a little hesitant at first, because I didn’t know how I felt about hiring someone I knew nothing about. I talked to Josue on the phone a few times as I was trying determine if he was the right guy. Whenever I talk to him on the phone he was always polite and answered all of my questions. I believe he was honest and upfront with the cost and materials. There was NO bait and switch involved. The day of the project, I received a called from Josue to let me know he was on his way and he was on time. Josue took the time to understand what I wanted before starting the work. When Josue took a lunch break he took the time to let me know what he was doing and when he would be back. Once the window was installed, I stepped out into the garage to check it out. There was sawdust everywhere and a big piece of the garage wall sitting there. I thought to myself, I have A LOT of cleaning up to do. Well, I was wrong there. Josue cleaned up the sawdust and took the piece of wall with him. I didn’t have to do anything. Josue is an outstanding person and pays attention to detail. The window looks amazing and the whole experience was awesome!!!

We hired Daniel to remove some windows and install French doors in their place. This did not seem like an easy job with the fact our home was built in 1893 and he was basically cutting a hole in the side of the house. Gonzales construction made it look easy! His team worked with skill and efficiency and did the job without issue. They also installed a redwood deck to bring us through the doors and onto a newly constructed stone patio. The result was worthy of 5 stars! Thanks Daniel!

Excellent, outstanding , well crafted, professional and a job well done. That's our description for the second floor, 21 fts. Patio extension he crafted on our house. It blend perfect with the existent patio. The bottom is also flushed and the columns are just the same style. Ryan was not only an excellent carpenter creating an exact extension of our existent patio, he also installed a barn door in our bathroom, installed a sliding door where a window was located, fixed the kitchen top cabinet and provided accurate guidance and advise at every single important decision we had to make in the process. His effort and dedication facilitated a stressful process. He is not only our carpenter; today is our friend. This wonderful man is extremely respectful, dedicated, positive, methodical on his crafting process. He is proud of his work's result and enjoyed the ride of remodel our house. He is well connected with skilled construction men that also helped in specific tasks at the house. If you are looking for a skilled, fair price, professional and dedicated carpenter or construction company which is licensed, possess insurance and know the legal process to get a construction permit, RW remodelers is the company you should trust.

Mike gave us a bid and the final price was right on budget. It was a smaller job but took two days; one for installation of tile and the other for grouting and clean up. He was on time for both days and it took only the time he estimated and keep the kitchen clean. Mike is knowledgeable, conscientious and professional and did a fine job! We are very pleased.

I worked with Bryan for about 6 months. In that time we completed condo renovation, basement finishing, crown install, baseboard install, door install and building/installing units. Bryan is fantastic, diligent, punctual and detail oriented. He is the best I’ve ever worked with at installing crown moulding and baseboard. I would highly recommend him for door installs also.

We have had the windows in our home replaced over the past 3 years by Conservation Construction, and have been very pleased with the results. CC was great to work with during this process, from the time we first met with their sales rep until the last new windows were installed. We appreciated their willingness to spread the window replacement timetable over three summers, while they held the purchase price the same until all the windows were installed. We were especially satisfied with the quality of work done by their installer, Tony. We were fortunate to have him doing the window installation each of the three summers. He was truly a professional in all phases. The windows have performed as promised and definitely have proven to be energy efficient throughout all seasons. We enjoyed doing business with CC and are totally satisfied with the outcome.

Siding Repair LLC made our house look new, with expertly installed Hardiboard fiber concrete siding and trim. Looks like wood, lasts like concrete -- 20 year paint warrantee. Local company, but the national warrantee is from Hardiboard. Jim and Jorge personally oversee their professional Hardiboard installation crew's work, Honest, competent, easy to work with, competitive pricing. They solve problems, not make them like some other contractors may do. The cheeseboard siding on the homes built around here in the 80's is at the end of its life cycle -- just another caulk and paint job were not an option anymore for us. If your house needs new siding, I recommend this company as the way to go.

For some context this was a fairly large commercial project with 40 plus installed windows. That said, Blake and Robert were excellent with communication and responsiveness to updates with the project. The communication and willingness of customer service sets this team apart. I look forward to future projects with this team. I recommend Z Double B with any project ranging with the small to the large. Kevin

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
