My son Shane wanted to take heavy metal guitar lessons, and my friend recommended Mike. I never wanted to pressure Shane to stay with lessons, but I didn't need to; not only did he learn songs from the rock bands he loved, but he ended up falling in love with jazz. Mike was always so friendly and knowledgeable, and it was nice to hear Shane playing heavy metal one day and jazz the next. Michelle B.

I purchased studio time for my nephew as a graduation present. KMG Life was very responsive and easy to work with getting everything setup. I asked my nephew and he loved the experience. His band's debut album is coming out soon and KMG helped this dream become reality. Definitely recommended.

I've worked with Aural Elixir on many recorded and live music projects since 2001. The band and its leader, Jesse Maclaine, are always professional, creative, and willing to make every project an outstanding experience for everyone involved. I highly recommend this musician and band!

Teresa was my daughter's piano teacher here in Chicago from kindergarten to 8th grade. From time to time, aside from piano lessons she helped my daughter with her clarinet for her school band. Teresa was an excellent teacher & a wonderful person. She inspired my kids with her works. I highly recommend her for everyone that needs a music lesson.

The Steve Manshel Band was the absolute best. We hired them to play our wedding reception, but this isn't a wedding band - they are a true band. Their live show was so much fun! We had one goal for our wedding reception and that was for everyone to dance. Steve was able to get everyone up and dancing. I mean EVERYONE! He handed out cowbells, tambourines, and worked the crowded to everyone's delight. This band doesn't just play the usual repertoire of lame wedding songs, they surprise you with great songs and play them with 110% of their heart. Steve was able to read the crowd and played something for everyone. Their skill as musicians allowed them to take the songs they played to new limits as they rocked out the evening. They handled everything in regards to the music and entertainment for the evening and were flexible in dealing with the limited space of the venue, which was completely stress free for us. People tell us all the time that our reception was one of the most fun weddings they have ever been to. This was because of the Steve Manshel Band. They will not disappoint.

Kyle Donovan was the finest music teacher I ever had, and boy have I ever had a lot of music teachers. First off, I've never been particularly good at music theory despite multiple attempts at understanding it. Kyle knows his theory, there's no doubt about that; but he was capable of translating that theory into something that I was capable of understanding. Secondly, his talent on the guitar (and vocals) is professional beyond compare, which is fantastic...but his kind, sympathetic, and caring disposition allow for him to put himself into your shoes so that he can best help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. It is my pleasure to give Kyle the highest of recommendations.

Derek Y Daniel are superb musicians. Their classical/flamenco style of guitar music is performed with great precision which, as an audience member, is very exciting to experience. Derek Y Daniel have performed several times at my coffee shop for music nights, as well as, for art receptions and other special events taking place in our venue. I can count on Derek Y Daniel to be punctual, professional and to put on an excellent show. It's always a pleasure working with Derek Y Daniel.

All night long during my wedding reception, the praise was relentless: "Where the hell did you find this band? They are incredible!" The Funky-Bots absolutely slay! I'm a musician myself, so it was really important to me to find a band that was tight and fun and played music with a real groove that will make people dance at my wedding. I sampled dozens of bands and got tons of quotes, but the clip Stephen sent me of his bandmates playing stuck out immediately. This isn't some corny neighborhood bar band with a rigid list of songs to choose from. The Bots are impeccably trained professionals, and everyone at my wedding could sense they were different. From the first meeting with Stephen, I felt at ease with his professionalism and confidence. He and his band never balked at a request, and were willing to try out anything, and everything they tried succeeded. Paige, the singer, has unbelievable poise and soul in her voice; she is a rare talent that you aren't going to find in most wedding bands. I could tell the band spent a lot of time practicing our songs, and they had fun with the arrangements. That energy and looseness carried over to the crowd; people can sense when the band is having fun, and it just makes the whole show exponentially better. The Bots came on time, were prompt with setup and flexible with the schedule, and were all around kind and gracious people. My only regret is that they couldn't play longer. I will recommend them to everyone I know till the day I kick the bucket. Thanks so much, y'all!!!

Robert Duran, owner of DSP Events, has run sound for The Jakarta Band for the past 2 years and we have been extremely satisfied with his work. Not only has he won over Isaac Points who is very particular about who does sound for his band, but the musicians and vocalists with Jakarta have also been won over by Robert because he gets it right. He is always set up and ready for sound check in plenty of time for the band to get done what they need to do. He works the show the entire time, mixing and changing on the fly for the many features of the band, changing vocalist, and demands from the clients. He is extremely good and he is reasonable. We love working with Robert. - Jackie Posey, Manager, The Jakarta Band

I extremely enjoyed listening to The Icons as they played many classic hits such as Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song from the '70s. After the concert was over, I found out that the band members were not only remarkably skilled musicians, but also really genuine people who were very friendly! Now that I am 21 years old, I am looking forward to being able to attend to their other private concerts! You people rock!

Vi Wickam is an exceptional and versatile musician. He is a rare musician who is equally at home in a tuxedo playing for an elite soiree or in blue jeans playing in a bluegrass jam. Last summer I contracted Vi Wickam to perform for 200 guests at the Opera Fort Collins "Songs in Summer" garden party at the Hixon home. As a strolling violinist he played everything from classical violin melodies to old time and Celtic fiddle tunes. Vi is also the founder and first violinist with the Fort Collins String Quartet. His traditional music includes guest appearance with bluegrass and old time music bands and recordings. He is also releasing a much anticipated solo CD this Spring! I highly recommend Vi The Fiddler for any event. He is reliable, courteous, and professional. Quality matters!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
