These great Architects did the redesign of my 102 year old West Side Tavern. We went through a lot of city code and engineering issues but they were professional, innovative and really great to work with. I would recommend them highly.

Michael was easy to work with. When first starting the project, we reviewed multiple architectural firms. In the end, Michael was responsive and flexible with a solid reputation based on our research. His style of collecting our needs and wants was refreshing. As we were working to manage the overall construction budget, Michael was able to include all the needs and almost every want that we discussed. His work was on-time and the budget management (value engineering) for the construction phase have all been accurate. Having an architect that ensured his billing and the physical construction costs were managed makes his role one that pays dividends throughout the entire process. Construction is moving along smoothly and we are looking forward to the day we get the keys to our new sanctuary we have always dreamed of. Having a solid network of resources to drive conversations with the various construction requirements in boulder and beyond, we have been delighted with his overall performance. Jon

Jeff is a (maybe the) premier Boulder architect. He has immense sensitivity to the unique features of the Boulder environment, which he incorporates into every design. A Yale trained architect, his workmanship is superb, his attention to detail unrivaled. We know, because we've worked with Jeff on our own home in Boulder over the last 35 years. Jeff created he original design in the mid-'70s. Since then we have added to or changed the house in several ways -- a southside, solarized sunspace, a remodeled kitchen, and most recently a new master bedroom suite. Jeff was the architect on all of these projects, which would not have been the case if we were displeased with his work. So I can recommend him without qualification to anyone building new or remodeling old in Boulder or the vicinity.

We have completed the first phase of our project with Bill. We were hesitant about what the experience working with an architect would be like, Bill was very professional and helpful. He took the time to make sure we understood the process and listens to what we wanted as well as adding his own expertise to fill in what we missed. The drawings he provided were excellent! He took what we wanted and got creative with the space we had to give us what we wanted with the least amount of compromising to the restraints. We would recommend the work he has done.

Adam worked with us after we became disenchanted with another architect designing our house. He listened well, took our specific needs/wants under consideration, and incorporated them into our house design. But, he then provided those 2-3 extra suggestions that really made the house work and flow well. There are always design changes as a house is built but we have found that they have been minimal using Adam's drawings and permit sets.

I had deadlines to meet with demanding needs, and Barry came through for me. I would give him a 10 out of 5 if I could, he was very knowledgeable and helpful throughout the whole process and he did it all in the short time he had. I would definitely recommend him and will be working with him in the future!

We choose Mike for our architect after interviewing 3 firms, and so happy we did. He has been very helpful and given us great insight into our home planning. We had chosen a simple plan on-line and he helped us make the changes neccesary to make it our own. He had very good ideas, keeping in mind our budget. Any time we have questions, he is very quick in his response back to us. He had the first rough draft done in just a few days! Pus, I love the fact that he has a preferred structural engineer that he alread works with. We are so excited to see the finished product! I will definately recommend Mike to my friends and family for any of thier architectural needs! Tracy & Scott F Brighon, Colorado

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
