Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

I recently contracted with MJB Landscaping and Construction to re-landscape both my front and back yards. My experience with the company from the beginning to the end of the project was outstanding. Mark, Alberto and the entire crew were all very knowledgeable, talented and efficient. Mark wants to ensure that his clients express their ideas and design preferences first and will then offer his own creativity to help the client finalize the project into a beautiful completion.

Reached out to Colorado Constrution Co to get an estimate for backyard kitchen build, landscaping etc. Set up day to meet. No show, no communication. I messaged them several times. Glad I didn't go with them for my project.

Chris and his Perfect Light crew were very professional and courteous through out the entire process. Chris installed a dry river bed without any design, just photos from us the client, (the borders were already in place) that included landscaping on my neighbors side yard as part of the process. The look and design flowed and tied into ours and the neighbors front yard landscaping. The work was completed in one day to perfection and added beauty to the look of the two side yards! They also installed and graded 7 yards of fill dirt onto a 45 degree sloped hill in the back yard. When completed the crew cleaned by power washing both areas where the work was performed. We had an issue with one of the sprinkler heads, I called Chris and he responded with in two hours and made the necessary repairs. I will definitely be calling Chris again in the future and would recommend his services for all you're landscaping needs!

We added new sod to our front yard and Michael and his team were able to provide a great value and knock out the work in one day. They were also able to provide additional recommendations, answer other landscape questions and provide additional services/requests on the fly. Was very happy with the project and will definitely use Stay Fresh for future jobs.

I hired Green Bean's Organic Ideas to refresh my back yard landscaping and plant several very large trees. They did a great job! Josh and his crew were talented, friendly, and timely. They showed up when they said they would and their work was excellent. I am planning on hiring them again to do a few more things in my yard in a month or so.

I cannot say enough good things about this company. I had 5 landscapers turn down my project because it was less that $1,000. They responded on a Thursday, met me Friday night at my house, we agreed upon a price and they showed up Monday morning to do the job. They did an excellent job and were in constant contact with me. I would very highly recommend them.

I am very impressed with SOGO Professional Hardscapes. They transformed my back yard and front walkway. Our communication was a little slow at first but once we established the details of the job they showed up earlier than expected, on time every day, and knocked out our project. I plan on posting pictures of the final job once I touch up a few of my landscaping details. I will recommend these guys to anyone.

Rene was very quick to respond to my request for a quote. Once hired and scheduled, the job was done in less than 2 days - I even received comments from neighbors that they couldn't believe how quickly the work was done! Rene always showed up when he said he would, and his team did an excellent job (rock work, sprinkler work, replacing sod, planting and more). I would definitely use RC Landscape & Waterfalls again. I hired Mark to put in a brick pathway from my front yard to the back yard. Upon my initial contact, Mark was extremely responsive and quick to come out and give me an estimate. Within 2 days, his crew was already working and finished the project within a very reasonable timeline at an extremely reasonable price. Prior to any additional work, I was contacted and given both the pros and cons of doing a little extra to make the project even better than originally thought. I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out - 10/10 would hire again for all major landscaping projects in the future.

Ernesto was fantastic to work with!! He definitely deserves all the good reviews on here and my husband and I highly recommend him! He quickly contacted me after I submitted the request through Thumbtack and even offered to do the bid that same evening. When he came out to do the bid he was professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Immediately after just walking into my backyard, he recognized an issue with the grading and knew that my basement had been flooding because of it. Ernesto was able to come out and take care of our sod request within a week of the bid and he offered a very reasonable price. He did an incredible job and our backyard looks amazing!! He and his crew worked efficiently while still making sure everything was done with the highest quality. We will definitely be hiring him again to take care of our grading issues and any other landscaping needs that arise.

I hired Sean to do some work on a rental home I had up for sale. He gave me a quote of approximately $7200, I signed the estimate and he did the work. I paid him $10,000 which included the installation of some landscaping lights. In hopes of speeding up his incredibly slow progress I offered him $300 per light. There were 6 lights and 2 spotlights. That left a tip of $1,000 because his work was good even though it took almost 3 weeks. About a week later I get an email from him with an estimate for approximately $18,000!!!! I was shocked!! On top of that he gave me $2,000 in receipts for materials that were made up of half his own tools. Now he is threatening to file a lien against the new owner! I think he’s running a scam, because he said something about this not being his first rodeo! He told me that he knew exactly how to file a lien. I’m just sick

We initially sought out landscaping help for the removal of a broken water feature and installation of two retaining walls in our backyard. Having recently purchased the home as a short sale, the yard was in desperate need of TLC and we discovered that it was a much larger project than we could handle. Dena from Gardens in Bloom came out almost immediately to look at our project and had a quote to us within a day or two- which we felt was extremely fast given it was during the peak summer season. During our initial visit we were impressed by Dena's energy and her enthusiasm for what she does; we were so impressed that we decided to add to the scope of work in the backyard (and then eventually the front!). What started out as a "little help" turned into a complete overhaul of sprinkler systems, rock beds, new sod, and flower beds in both our front and back yards, eventually creating a safe and beautiful oasis for our young family that we have thoroughly enjoyed! Dena and Mel have a crew of young men who were so pleasant and polite, and were always there when promised. We were also happy that Dena was present on site every day, making sure that everything was running smoothly and progressing as it should. Any issue or new idea that we had, she was always available and just a phone call away. As the work progressed, we added and changed and played with different ideas, and it was never a problem. We really felt like they wanted us to be 100% happy, even going so far as to have made multiple trips out to "tweak" and fine tune our vision after the project was complete. I can't speak highly enough of both Mel and Dena. They truly are kind people who we enjoyed meeting and we are beyond satisfied with the work that they did. We look forward to enjoying our yard for years to come!
