My son Shane wanted to take heavy metal guitar lessons, and my friend recommended Mike. I never wanted to pressure Shane to stay with lessons, but I didn't need to; not only did he learn songs from the rock bands he loved, but he ended up falling in love with jazz. Mike was always so friendly and knowledgeable, and it was nice to hear Shane playing heavy metal one day and jazz the next. Michelle B.

Love his method of teaching...to the child's particular interests. Songs that they love. What a great motivator and it works! Kevin is very thorough and uses technology to enhance the lesson and practice times. He has also incorporated fun opportunities to encourage playing with others like Jam Band Sessions and playing alongside his performance settings for the kids to get a real sense of being a musician.

David played lead guitar in my band. He is a "walk on" quick study for all types of music. He gives 110% with a top quality performance. He is committed and reliable for the job at hand. Nothing went wrong, but if it did he could pull out of it.

I've worked with Aural Elixir on many recorded and live music projects since 2001. The band and its leader, Jesse Maclaine, are always professional, creative, and willing to make every project an outstanding experience for everyone involved. I highly recommend this musician and band!

I would most definitely recommend Sydney's piano lessons! She is a very helpful and patient teacher; not to mention, she is also a very skilled musician. Her piano lessons have set a great foundation for me in music. The knowledge that I have from her lessons helps me to play with other musicians and to play in my school marching band. I have learned much about music theory from Sydney as well as a love for playing piano. If Sydney hadn't moved away, I would still love to have her as my piano teacher today.

Wirewood Station is a very fun band! They recently played our outdoor wedding and everyone loved them. Their music set the perfect vibe for the evening. In addition, they were punctual, professional, and even learned a few songs we wanted to be played! I highly recommend them.

John played guitar and was the lead singer in my band for several years until his job forced him to move to another city. John is positively the most talented musician I've ever played with in my fifty years of playing music. In addition to being an outstanding singer and musician, he is one of the nicest people I've ever known. Just knowing John has inspired me to a better musician and a better person.

Scott provided a 4-piece bluegrass band for my sister's wedding. He was knowledgeable and learned all the songs we needed for the toast and first dances and played them well. He was willing to make changes at the last minute and he was very professional. Great band!

My husband is a huge music fan so we spent quite a bit of time searching for a band for our wedding. He likes more of the classics where me and my girlfriends wanted pop/dance music. Daddyblue was the only band we found that played every style flawlessly. The reception was an absolute blast. Even my grandparents danced most of the night! We were so delighted. Thanks Biff! We received percussion lessons from Kevin Keith. He not only is an excellent musician, but he is a wonderful teacher. He is very knowledgeable in many genres of music, from solo literature, to band/orchestral music, to jazz. Of which, he shares his knowledge and experiences with his students freely. He is very hardworking and enthusiastic to ensure that his students get a quality education. He is great in communication, both with the student , in ensuring understanding of lesson materials, and with the parents on updates on how the lessons are progressing. He has a very patient and friendly disposition, that would allow anyone to feel comfortable in working with him. He has been a wonderful teacher and mentor for the past 2.5 years.

Something for everyone, and astoundingly good! Nothing but praise for Longmont band The Icons. I heard them last summer at a festival in Leyden Rock's neighborhood park, and was blown away by their covers--not just by the diversity of their set list (Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars), but by their sheer musicianship. Vocalists Ted Reedy and Jim Simmons (also lead guitar) can convincingly sing just about anything, while band members Will Robison on drums, David Bergner on bass, and Egemen Kesikli on keyboards complete the sound in a cohesive blend of talent and energy.

Vi Wickam is an exceptional and versatile musician. He is a rare musician who is equally at home in a tuxedo playing for an elite soiree or in blue jeans playing in a bluegrass jam. Last summer I contracted Vi Wickam to perform for 200 guests at the Opera Fort Collins "Songs in Summer" garden party at the Hixon home. As a strolling violinist he played everything from classical violin melodies to old time and Celtic fiddle tunes. Vi is also the founder and first violinist with the Fort Collins String Quartet. His traditional music includes guest appearance with bluegrass and old time music bands and recordings. He is also releasing a much anticipated solo CD this Spring! I highly recommend Vi The Fiddler for any event. He is reliable, courteous, and professional. Quality matters!

My son wanted to take flute lessons over the summer in anticipation of school band. David worked well with my kid (who had no musical experience) and related well to him. Really enjoyed working with him, getting to know him a little, and never had any problems. Great with kids, would highly recommend him!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
