Leslie was great to work with while scheduling my families move. I told her what the details were (9 miles, two bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor to a house across town) and she put together a reasonable quote of 4-6 hours. The movers showed up and got right to work. I told them what needed wrapped and what went where. They hustled getting our stuff packed in the truck and headed straight to our new place. absolutely no taking their sweet time to milk the clock. Finished the move and clocked out at 3.5 hours! below the estimate. Pretty awesome! do yourself a favor and let them give you a quote.

Dear Gabriela, I just wanted to thank you for helping me with my house remodeling project. The kitchen looks amazing! I love the tile you picked for the back splash, as well as the one for the fire place. The floors give the place a warm, elegant look. I am very grateful to you

Working with Donna at DecorReform was so much fun! I had just purchased a townhome and I honestly didn't know where to start. I had a 3 bedroom house that was empty and a budget I needed to stay within. Donna assured me there were ways that we can furnish some areas to start and add on pieces when budget permitted. Well I can honestly say that I don't know if I would change anything by adding on! Everything came out perfect! My home is now a home. Donna was patient and thorough. She actually listened to me and came up with a plan that I loved! The best part of it was my reveal. I felt like I was on one of those TV shows!! If you are looking for someone who goes above and beyond, then reach out to Donna! I guarantee you that you will feel comfort immediately following your first call. Thank you so much for everything!

Kathy came to stage my house when I was at work, when I walked into my home at the end of the day I didn't recognize the place! My home looked amazing! Kathy used my furniture and brought in several beautiful pieces of her own. The way she arranged my furniture in my living rooms showed how much potential these rooms had. The master bedroom was decorated so beautifully. She made it look like a peaceful retreat. I called all my friend to come see my newly decorated home, several of them asked if Kathy would come decorate their home, they aren't moving, they just wanted her magical touch. When my realtor walked in she was stunned, her first comment "I have seen so many homes staged but this is amazing! You win the prize for the best staged home I have ever seen". You will not be disappointed with Kathy, her professionalism, her sense of style and her knowledge of what makes a home sell. Kathy was a joy to work with!

Katie Albee of Sensing Self Designs is tremendously talented, professional, intuitive, kind, and delivers far more than one would expect. Initially, I hired Katie to assess and organize my home office. This office is in the front room of my house and is very awkward. Katie took the time to learn about my business, my business goals, and the day to day of my life. From this point she developed and executed a plan to create a pleasant, professional, and efficient space. This included organizing, designing, installing desks, shelves, hooks, and all kinds of nice personal touches. Her suggestions also prompted us to take a nice family photo and we are grateful to have those memories as well. After the home office, we moved into the kitchen where Katie transformed an uninspired and lackluster tract home kitchen to a sleek and modern look. I feel so much better in my home and look forward to working with Katie on many future projects. Her intuition, design skills, and the ability to do the projects (from painting to installing things to sink installation) makes for a really convenient and full-service process. I highly recommend Katie Albee of Sensing Self Designs. Your space will thank you and it will increase your overall happiness!

I had a wonderful experience with Beth when she helped me stage my home for sale. She was very considerate of the time and money that I spent for staging. Everything we shopped for complimented what I already had so that I can decorate with it at my new home. I would have never picked most of the items we found when we shopped together, but they looked fantastic when we put them in my house. She also used some of my current decor in ways I would never have thought of. She even educated me on how to organize better. I have more room in my drawers and shelves now. The house looks great and definitely more ‘sale ready’. I would not hesitate to recommend Beth to anyone looking for help with home decorating or staging.

I hired Kristy to redesign my office and I could not be more impressed and pleased with the job. Kristy was always very professional and on top of things (delivery of furniture, contractors, etc). She listened to what I liked (looked at another room in my house that reflected my tastes) and suggested items that were in line with my style. She choose items that I loved and overall did a fabulous job designing the office. She was also very flexible with my hectic schedule and went above and beyond to get the job done within the time frame I requested. I have never received so many compliments as I do on my office, thanks to Kristy! She was simply amazing... we are hiring her to design numerous other spaces in our home. I could not be more pleased!!!

Due to a death in the family, combining 3 households into 1 small house & an extended illness- we had lost control of our home. We had so much STUFF in stacks, in boxes & it was piled up EVERYwhere. We couldn't find anything, we were too embarrassed to let anyone into our home & we couldn't possible imagine that we would ever get it all organized. I had absolutely NO idea how or where to start and I was seriously depressed by the whole situation. I looked online for 'professional organizers' and am so glad I saw Allie's post. It was an extremely difficult call to make, but it all turned out so well that I'm very happy I did. I was worried about being judged, embarrassed & ashamed of how messy & cluttered everything was. I was absolutely dreading having to show all of it to someone, especially a stranger. But when Allie didn't run out of our house screaming, and instead seemed to already have a plan of not only WHERE & HOW to START, she was also able to envision what it all could become. With time, and due to Allie's excellent communication skills, it didn't take long for me to start feeling hopeful about our situation for the first time in a very long time. Very soon after Allie arrived for our initial consultation I knew I had made a good choice in calling her and as the work began & Allie helped me to actually find a "starting place" I was even happier that I found her. I'm not sure where to start when it comes to why Allie was so incredibly helpful to us. My moral was very low, I couldn't find a "starting point" and Allie almost immediately made me feel that it was doable and that it was possible to get our house back & to be able to enjoy it again. She had the knowledge of HOW to do it as well as a VISION of what it could be. Allie is also a great listener, sometimes her first idea of what to do w/ something wasn't a great fit to how we actually lived & she was always very flexible & open to making adjustments that would work for us. She has so many wonderful ideas about organizing homes, rooms & lives that I'm sure she's able to customize her plans to fit just about anyone's specific needs & wants. She has a great "eye" when it comes to style/colors/design and we ended up doing a bit of re-decorating too & that was a HUGE plus for me- & for us. It was the icing on the cake! I was continually impressed with Allie's eye for detail, her professionalism, work ethic (I seriously don't think she ever sat down in the months that she was with us) she appears tireless & she's surprisingly physically strong for her size, so don't let it fool you. :) I truly have never met anyone more reliable, more detailed oriented or more resourceful. Any BIG project I can imagine, whether it be organizing your house, planning your wedding or any other event that requires attention to details, timeliness and organizational skills are exactly the kind of thing that Allie is able to do, accomplish, make look easy & effortless. It doesn't hurt that she's a very very hard worker. In my experience, most people usually do not excel at ALL stages of a project. Some people are "big picture" people while others are better with details. It is no exaggeration to say that Allie is truly able to do it all: Set goals, plan how to accomplish them & what order things should be done in. There's her attention to detail and how quickly she seems to be able to pull things together that I have no doubt would've taken me at least 3 times longer. And all the while she's performing these organizational miracles, she's sweet, kind, TIDY, I mean very neat-- & somehow she keeps herself organized while fighting her way thru a huge mess. (It's actually pretty amazing to watch her work. Seriously. There were times when "Tasmanian Devil" or "Whirling Dervish" came to mind-- but in a GOOD way!) She's pretty darn amazing & I'm grateful for all of the different kinds of things she helped me with since meeting. She's also got a hilarious sense of humor once you get to know her! Even when I was feeling the most stressed & overwhelmed while we worked on my house, I never once saw Allie waiver in her professionalism or her personal belief (and vision) regarding the possibilities that were tangled up in our big messy pile of stuff. I honestly don't know anyone like her. I believe "overachiever" or "determined" might be good words to describe her, but she's not stubborn, at least not when it comes to her work (you would have to ask her husband about how she is when she's off the clock) It's not an exaggeration to say that Allie actually did change how I look at those things in life that torment us, that LOOM, that we try to avoid or we put off for as long as we can. Having seen her do what I really believed was the impossible (organizing my home, husband & 3 dogs) made a lasting impression on me & I'm grateful for that (probably unintended) gift she gave. I honestly would trust Allie with anything. If she says she'll do it, she will. If she says she'll be there, she will. And if she tells you that you can accomplish your goal, whatever it may be, you should believe her because she will guide you, motivate you & lead you thru it. AND, she's more than capable of just doing it herself, if that's what you're looking for.

I had a fabulous experience with Wall2Wall interiors. I was excited yet nervous as we began planning the remodel of the kitchen and living room, but Cindy quickly was able to take away the nervousness I was feeling. She was completely competent and engaged the entire way through the project. I could not be happier with the entire experience and final outcome. She got more from the budget we gave her than I would have thought possible. I would absolutely recommend Wall2Wall interiors to anyone needing interior decorating plans. Sincerely, Martinson family

After recently moving into a new home, I hired Kathy for living room design and for a paint color consult. Kathy is amazing. She is very warm and personable, and she took the time to get to know me and understand my style. I was new to the area, and Kathy drove me to several design centers to shop for furnishings. She had creative ideas to make my living area functional and comfortable. I am so happy I used Kathy’s services and I highly recommend her.

I received staging and home decorating services from Madera Rogers when I placed my 5 bedroom home in Denver, CO. on the market for sale about 2 years ago. Madera's style is tasteful and unique in her use of key accent pieces. She is mindful of budget considerations and always keeps commitments.

We have a great room that I find very difficult to section and decorate. I was thrilled to find Natalie as she was able to help really define and simplify the room. I love that she used much of what we already had, but also added just he right details to make the room feel cozy and inviting. She offered many great ideas and options, both in person and online, never making me feel awkward when I didn't like something she suggested. I have already recommended Natalie to a friend. I would encourage anyone to work with her to just "freshen up" a room or even if starting from scratch.

It was a pleasure working with Vicki. I had ordered an oversized custom hooked rug from her. I didn’t want my decor to over shadow it so chose to let Vicki handle the whole project. I was thrilled with the result.

Nicole worked with my husband and I when we were selling our San Francisco Studio. After two people lived in 450sf for two years, it was cluttered to say the least...queue in Nicole's staging capabilities! Nicole was able to transform the space, bringing in special decorative details (that I ended up keeping), making it look bigger, brighter and very welcoming for our open houses. Her taste in light and airy side tables, carpets and throw pillows made the room come together and flow! Our realtor’s reaction to Nicole's finished project was “wow! I’m dumbfounded!”. Three days later we had an amazing offer with which we were also dumbfounded! Thank you for all your patience and direction with my indecision, and I look forward to having you over for the new space!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

        • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
        • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
          • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
        • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
          • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
        • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
        • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
