Mike did an excellent job repairing the pergola at my father's home. His fees are very reasonable and work exceptional. I live in a different state and Mike communicated with me in a very timely manner as well as sent pictures the minute the job was done. I would highly recommend his services.

Marlon installed new covers over my front and back porch and built a fence with gate around the front porch. I'm very happy with his work and I'm confident he will stand behind it should anything need to be fixed. He was also very friendly, which is a nice bonus. Highly recommended.

Forrest Ponder recently completed a complete gut and renovation of our 1957 master bathroom. The renovation included installation of a bathtub, toilet, double sink vanity, a shower with glass doors, a new window replacement, and radiant tile flooring. We are very happy with the way that the project turned out and Forrest was really easy to work with. He was great at listening to our wants/needs for the project and then carrying out our vision. He was quite concerned with making sure that we were happy, and corrected anything that we were not 100% satisfied with on the first round. He was detail oriented and kept our house clean throughout the project. Our bathroom renovation turned out great, and we would highly recommend Forrest for your next project.

Steve did a fantastic job installing our fireplace stone and wrap around mantel. His bid for the project was very fair and he spent a lot of extra time as the project unfolded to make sure we would be happy with the finished product. We had a particular stone, wood, and final look we wanted and he was very accommodating in making this happen. He ended up contracting out the mantel to make sure it looked right and we were very happy with who he chose. He was always easy to get a hold of, straight forward with costs, and a pleasure to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Steve to friends and we will surely contact him again for future projects. Very nice and honest guy that provided quality workmanship.

Dave came over (on time) to do a handful of odd jobs that we needed from installing bathroom mirrors, to fixtures. We also needed closet doors installed and he had to get creative to get them on, given challenges with the size and fit. He was extremely friendly, worked hard the entire time and was very fair and reasonable. We'll have him back again soon for more work for sure.

Skyler and Ian started and completed installing baseboards and re-casing the doors on our main floor this weekend. I was not sure what to expect but we could not be more impressed with the attention to detail, creativity, and skilled craftsmanship they brought to their work. We will definitely be working with them again in the future. Thank you!

Daniel and his crew did a fantastic job building our new front porch. This wasn't a project for an inexperienced contractor, as we had to fire one (due to lack of knowledge and technique) before we met with Gonzalez Construction LLC. Daniel and his team were on time, on budget, and followed the specific permit drawings which were approved. There is no doubt that we will be contacting them again on our upcoming projects. A reliable, truthful, professional, and experienced contractor is hard to find, believe me, save yourself the headache and go with them.

Marc built us a beautiful redwood front porch! He kept us involved the entire time and was the most reasonably priced. All of our neighbors are asking for his info! He also worked while we weren't even there and made sure to stay on track even when Home Depot failed to deliver materials on time, he went and got them himself.

Mitch applied a sealer to our concrete patio and was very professional. I appreciated that after pressure washing, he took the time to ensure the patio was dry before applying the seal.

Leroy put in a water faucet in our backyard when a very known company came out and said they couldn't without putting holes in our walls. He did it without holes and charged maybe a quarter of what their estimate was. In addition, he installed our brand new front screen security door and back patio sliding screen door. He was so professional and cleaned up everything. He is going to be doing our backyard next month and putting in a new deck. He is absolutely the best and he has so knowledge!! Thank you Leroy!

Denver decks and covers built a 1200 sq foot deck for us. I can't tell you what an improvement it is over the crumbling wooden porch we had. I love the low maintenance composite and the gorgeous fortress metal railings that were recommended by Denver decks and covers! Our new deck is such an inviting and comfortable place to be, both with visitors and without. I would highly recommend them, as they were professional and timely. They were also respectful of our space, cleaning up after themselves and mindful of their equipment in our yard. Great work!

He and his helper did all the work that I asked of them and then some. Our deck roof and front porch have never looked so good. The work at the barn was above and beyond what I expect.

Josh Barry and his assistant, Eli, built a beautiful pergola on our deck. Not only is the structure beautiful, it has been built to withstand the fierce winds we get periodically in our location in Arvada, CO. They were very professional and completed the job in three days, working into the night. They are also very nice people to work with. I highly recommend this company.

Cody did such a incredible job! He not only gave me my dream kitchen, but he was also so personable, professional, and kind. While he was here I also had some other things that needed fixed around the house and he was happy to help with. A master of all trades. 10/10 have recommended to all my friends and will have him do future things to our home when needed.

Alex was able to start immediately, he provided guidance along the way, even fixed an error on my part without additional cost. Very happy with the price and quality of the labor he provided to install my egress window well. Would recommend. I have already agreed to hire him for additional projects at my home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
