Your burning questions: answered

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Do electricians offer remote or virtual services?

While electrical work is typically performed in person, you may come across some electrician profiles that state the pro is offering remote services. If you do, contact local electricians to discuss your particular project and what type of remote services they may offer.

BEST ELECTRICIAN on Thumbtack!!! And he’s a certified master electrician! David is fantastic, he’s very reasonable (one other pro quoted more than twice as much), and he even took care of a few other small issues while he was here. I could take more pictures of outlets, but you get the idea. My mom and sister are realtors, and I already gave them this referral. David is great! We’ll use again and recommend to everyone we know.

Great to find an electrician that was able to come by within hours to replace a faulty outlet as well as go beyond to check an advise on some other electrical issues in the house we just moved into. Thanks again!

We contracted the hanging of four lights into pre-wired rooms, and a new light-bar install in the basement. Brian showed up early and got right to work on the light-bar. Despite some wiring oddities in our new house, the light was installed with a new switch, and looks fantastic. The other four lights were more straightforward and he knocked those out quick. Very happy with the quality of work, interaction, and pricing we got from The Denver Electrician

We had a strange smell in our dining room so I called The Electricians on the recommendations of a friend. They arrived on time and I was so impressed that Tony is committed to quality work and the safety of my family. He repaired a chandelier and discovered a wiring problem, so he came out a second time to replace the bad wiring. The job was well done and he cleaned up everything perfectly before he left. The work was done a month ago and he even checked in to see if everything was working properly. I will use this team again for any electrical needs!

I cannot recommend Larry high enough for his work and professionalism addressing many of our electrical and wiring needs, including a few curve-balls we threw at him during installation. He installed 15 lights and ceiling fans in short order, was friendly, respectful and cordial, and as important was a highly knowledgeable and skilled in the art and science of electrical work. On top of this, his price was significantly better than all other electricians who priced the job. We’ve had our fair share of price gouging in the past with electrical work, but Larry works (and prices) with integrity. Thanks again Larry, we’ll be seeing you again!

Richard is the BEST! This man came in my house and treated us like family. Not to mention the quality of work he does! Trust me when I say I was very hesitant about booking an electrician but Richard put my mind at ease. We had some large projects for him and he was able to do it at a far better price than what a larger company would charge. He was always very responsive, professional, and so so kind! I will never use anyone else again. I HIGHLY recommend Richard. His quality of work is outstanding and you will not be disappointed, I can promise you that. Look no more, this is your man!!!! Ps: I should also add that I am a hard one to please, so If this man can make ME of all people happy, then he’s doing something right!!

We had a L2 Car Charging port installed in our garage. Quote process was easy. Job was well done under difficult house design. Installation work was completed in about a half day. Things to know before you have an EV charger installed: -Know the Max Amps you to support your vehicle or plan for future vehicles with higher needs. -There is an 80% rule for continuous draw on a circuit. 60 amp circuit will only allow 48ams continuous draw. Plan with your electrician, higher amps require different cable standards, so get the right cable type installed or your circuit rating. - if you are not installing a hard wired, L2 wall-mounted charger that can give the full 80% of the amps, then know the max amp specs for your outlet type and your mobile charger. A NEMA 14-50 outlet maxes out at 40 amps continuous draw (not 48amps if the breaker and wire supports 60 amps). - If you are just using a mobile charger, have it handy when the outlet is installed. It often works better for mobile chargers (Tesla and several others on Amazon) to have the ground at the top of the outlet, not the bottom. That way allows the mobile charger to hang from the outlet easier. (We are flipping our outlet over after the install.) -You will probably never be sad that you don’t have to go to the gas station again! Cheers!
