Walter installed 3 bathroom vent fans for me. He did a very clean job and also took the time to explain why he was installing something in a certain way.

I recently hired Harry to hang four large pictures in my home that I could not handle myself. I'm extremely satisfied with his work. He did a fantastic job for a reasonable price. He hung three pictures in my bedroom, one in the bathroom, and even installed a towel bar in the bathroom for me. I am very happy with his work and will definitely use him again. Thank you again Harry for helping to make my life a little easier and my to do list a little shorter.

Job entailed making repairs to bathroom plumbing installed early 'Fifties. Since some parts were not available Eddie was able to rebuild/refurbish parts to avoid replacing entire sink unit. Now one week later and no leaks or drips.

Shane did a great job! I hired for a kitchen vent installation job. When they were done, I asked if they could fix a faulty drier vent. He fixed that real quick. Very professional and friendly. I will hire again without a doubt!

John did such a great job with the painting - I made a color suggestion and let him run with it. It came out perfect. He has a great eye for detail. While he was there, he also noticed I had a leaky faucet. After some discussion, the project morphed into a new faucet, vanity and light fixture with switch. He gave me a great price for the complete job and it's like I have a whole new bathroom! John was very friendly and professional to work with.

Bathroom piping rerouting, remove and install new vanity, recessed lighting and exhaust vent installation and popcorn ceiling removal. Luther was such an outstanding contractor. Very knowledgable, good pricing and did not raised prices or did less work. Not once I saw him slack, just killing time. He made things work and really gave me confidence that I was getting what I paid for. Without a doubt I will have him on my speed dial for future projects. Those negative reviews on his profile, not even close to the job Luther performs. He is extremely professional and takes pride on his work. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Dan was hired to assemble and install IKEA cabinets in the kitchen. He did an impressive job they look beautiful. It was part of remodeling of our kitchen and as a contractor he scheduled his time around and with both the electrician and plumber. It soon became apparent that his skills on other parts of the renovation was invaluable. He opened the kitchen up in ways we didn't know was possible and offered ideas in the design that made our little kitchen more spacious then we thought possible. His help with coordinating color and patterns made this old kitchen in to something you might see in a magazine. We love it Thank you Dan! My Mother is a bit of a perfectionist and making her happy can be a task at times, but he accomplished it with a very professional attitude and skill. I have worked with other contractors before who can be tempermental with poor communication and disappearing for weeks at a time Not Dan he always kept me in the loop and was available for every concern. As for any improvement in hind sight the kitchen floor should have been covered the whole time because the plaster dust was somewhat difficult to scrub off the floor. And can I mention he did this while 2 small kids were Home on vacation and often in the way. His patients are to be admired as he always had a good sense of humor and a positive attitude.

I have used Browns HandyMan Services for several years now. He has replaced windows for me, painted many rooms and all the trim inside our home. Did major painting on the outside of our home as well. He did a wonderful job on the remodel of our master bathroom, which was not easy because we had to meld the old with the new. He is currently building an English Greenhouse for me. I find him to be very detailed, works very hard and in a timely matter. The site is always kept clean. I have never been disappointed and he exceeds our expectations. He is very honest and trust worthy. I call him first with my ongoing projects and home improvement needs. Rena' - Canton, CT

From day one Paulino was very responsive to any inquiry I had about the job. He was professional throughout. Due to traffic conditions he was a few minutes behind schedule but he gave me adequate notice of the delay. He was meticulous with the job (interior door installation), completed the job in a timely manner and cleaned up after completion. I highly recommend Paulino Home improvement to anyone who is looking for a door installer!

I hired Mike to renovate our family room to give it an updated look. Work included taking down old dark paneling, new sheet-rock, taping, painting, new trim around the base of the room and around the windows, installing 3 new windows and a new slider door. Mike was timely and consistent from beginning to end, from phone calls and emails to showing up when he said he would be there. His work was priced fairly and his attention to detail is something I admire. I can't stress enough how clean he kept the room while working. Always using drop cloths and vacuuming everyday before he left. I get tons of compliments of our new updated room and I would highly recommend Goodman Building Company! I have already talked to Mike about the next few projects, updating my kitchen and bathroom in a few months!

I had a bathroom from the 1970's complete with a blue tab and tile. All the tiles along the tub were falling out and leaking. I called Bathfitters, and they wanted an exorbinate amount to fix it. Tony came out and gave me some fantastic ideas. First of all, he suggested we retain the blue tub, which I wanted to do, and which makes the bathroom unique. Then he suggested a bring in a neutral wall tile, BUT add aborder of blue tile that would match the bathtub and bring the room together. He also quoted me for a new floor, painting the wall, installing a new toilet, and moving and reinstalling a heavy cabinet. He work was impeccable. He was always on time. He price was unbelievably less than Bathfitters to do all the work. He also did extra work, like personally refinishing some work along the border of the shower. He went out of his way to do an amazing job. I would highly recommend him for his attention to detail, creativity, and willingness to work with the client.

I hired Scott to completely remodel an outdated bathroom from 85 in my new home. Scott handled the complete demo, rewiring/electric, plumbing, sheetrock/molding, tile/grout work, glass installation, and all other details of the job. It was so convenient to have one person organizing the work for the bathroom so I did not need to hire multiple people and coordinate the jobs myself. I was able to communicate well with Scott on what our vision was for the bathroom. He helped pick pain colors, fixtures, and tile options. My husband and I couldn't be happier with the final product. The workmanship is second to none! The drywall and tile look amazing! Thank you Scott for all the hard work you put in... we will definitely be calling you for another project soon.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
