We had a couple ad handyman tasks: installing a doorknob unit and some light masonry ( a soap dish that had fallen of the tiled wall in the shower). Harry was communicative before he even arrived. He was on time, personable and very efficient. He even had an extra door knob on hand when the original didn't quite work. I would certainly hire him again!

Marty has completed several projects for us in the past six years. Every one was expertly completed, on time, according to specifications. Marty's prices are very reasonable, his estimates accurate, and his workmanship excellent. He is exceptionally versatile. He can tackle almost anything, from carpentry to masonry, floor laying to plumbing, electrical to painting and pressure washing. Projects completed for us include the conversation of two bedrooms into a studio with kitchen, with a new vinyl floor and the addition of an outside/entry door; replace an existing single basin vanity with a two basin vanity, and new vinyl floor; remodeling our laundry room; pressure washing and painting the house exterior. Marty is an excellent, reliable and affordable all-rounder with a pleasant personality. We will request his services for any future project we might have. We recommend him highly. He is a jewel!

R. Julian arrived a few minutes early for our appointment. He went up on the roof and photographed to show me what he found. He then made the necessary repairs and charged me less than his quote because there wasn't as much work to do as he thought there might be. He guaranteed his work and promised to re-apply sealant free of charge should there be any leaks. We shook hands and we were done. The leak was where I told R.Julian where it would be, in the collar seal around the bathroom vent. From arrival to departure, the total time spent was approximately 30 minutes. His father was pleasant company while his son repaired my roof. To his father: Thank you for your help when I fell into the bushes . (Looking up, I walked off my own front steps.)

Integrity isn't something you find very often these days but that is the best word I can use to describe my experience with Swift Waters Gutters. Todd recently replaced my carpeted floor with a vinyl flooring. My experience was nothing short of perfect. He was honest - I was ready to replace my kitchen cabinets and he gave me alternatives which will save me money. He took pride in his work - because my floor was not level and the corners weren't always square the molding didn't lay in as nicely as it should. He took the time to show and explain the problem to me and HE wasn't satisfied until it was perfect. While he was here he noticed the faucet for my washing machine was leaking. It isn't a problem now but had he not pointed it out and told me what to do to repair it I could've had a big problem! I highly recommend Swift Waters Gutters when you need the job done right and for an honest price.

Our experience with Charlie Rinaldi for our home inspection was wonderful! Being an Engineer, his expertise put us at ease while buying a 93 year old REO house. We've bought 7 houses over the years and have never had such a thorough knowledgeable inspectior! He spent over 3 hours going over and explaining every inch of the house and addressed our concerns with the foundation, roof, plumbing and partially updated electrical. Charlie's electrical background was extremely helpful. Charlie is not a nit-picker. He doesn't exaggerate minor issues to validate inspection report as many other home inspectors do. Charlie explained the necessary immediate repairs , and the minor repairs that would be needed in the future. *Weeks after our inspection, we had an issue with mortgage underwriter who'd seen an appraisal picture and was adding last minute contingencies to our loan . We reached out to Charlie Rinaldi requesting his help. He was a true professional and went the extra mile, writing a letter to clarify the non-existent issue. We highly recommend Charlie and Rinaldi Engineering for thorough and accurate home inspections, he is truly qualified with his Engineering background ! Thank you Thumbtack!

I had Afonso come over gave me a good quote on the roof. Within few days him and his guys started to put down new roof the roof was leaking bad due to previous roof had Damaged most of sheed rock and my sky lights. Ever since since new roof havent had any leaks so far in contract we had to repair the skylights with flashing but they requested new skylights I went and bought new skylights due to extensive damage they put the skylights down at no cost due to contract and had all replaced gutters and put new copper on chimney which where on contract. Over all they did good job only suggestion I have is make sure for future they run the magnet for nails I had to plug my car tire three times due to screws and nails. Other than that roof hasn't had any leaks yet.

One of the very best contractors I have ever worked with. Removed and installed my guesthouse roof on the day scheduled in 8 hours. Perfect! That they have a dedicated scheduler means you are always kept informed. Sheetrock installers arrived next business day. Very responsive and punctual. Excellent teamwork.

I chose Henry Guzman and CT Masonry & Waterproofing to replace my roof because he came in with a very good price (lowest out of the 3 estimates) but for most important to me are the excellent reviews I read about the company. I was not disappointed. Henry and his crew arrived at my residence at the scheduled time and finished the same day. His crew did an excellent job on my roof. They were very polite, answered all my questions and did a very thorough clean up of the property. It was a pleasure to work with Henry and I would highly recommend CTM&W.

Aduke and his team did a great job putting on a new front porch, wrapping the back entryway with stone, putting on a new back entryway, leveling the flagstone in back patio, and wrapping the fireplace with stone. If I had questions Aduke would get back to me immediately or within a reasonable amount of time. If any issues came up he resolved them satisfactorily and promptly. Aduke and his team were respectful to me and my family. I would recommend Aduke, and I would use A James Construction LLC again in the future.

We really appreciate your assistance with our roof repair. Though it was a small job, we received prompt communication and a fair price. Also, the owner came and did the job himself which was very nice to see. We will keep him in mind for any future work we need done.

I know little to nothing about roofing, but when my roof started leaking in the rain, I wasn't certain what to do. I realised it must have been doing it for a while, but I didn't notice because I only use the attic for storage space. It wasn't until it started puddling and coming through the living room ceiling that I saw the problem. A friend recommended Connecticut Home Remodelers, and said that they do beautiful work, and would be able fix my roof for me easily, and I must say I am quite impressed, and very happy with all the new shingling. It was easy to get ahold of them, and I spoke to Chris on the phone to set up a time to have everything looked at, and then fixed. They are punctual, professional, and the quality of the work is amazing. Plus they were able to help me more accurately work out any issues with insurance, and I just had to pay a deductable.I highly recommend this business.

I had an amazing experience with DiNoia Construction and plan to use them again. The owner, Joey DiNoia coordinated everything and found the best quality products and roofers for the best price. He kept me well informed throughout the process and was a pleasure to work with. The roofers showed up on time and were polite and professional. I felt very comfortable with them working on the house. They completed the job on time within budget and cleaned up afterwards. The roof is beautiful, I would definitely recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
