Fresh express absolutely lives up to their name! Very punctual and friendly staff! The standard of cleaning provided by them was exceptional.. I’m very big on clean bathrooms and they did an above and beyond job on my entire establishment as well as the bathrooms. Glass and mirrors were immaculate with no smudges or streaks(I’ve had that problem with previous cleaning services). Overall I’d rate this company a 10+ and the owner Tarray Gibbs is very professional and friendly as well. Thank u fresh express for my newfound faith in cleaning services!

I was very pleased with Kris and his partner. Kris responded quickly, was professional, and arrived on time. I was most impressed with his honesty, this is always greatly appreciated. Kris didn't try to repair something that was OK as is and I respect that. His response time was immediate, sending me the information I needed. I would recommend Voak LLC to anyone who needs home improvement work done. I will definitely be calling on them in the future for any work my home might need. Much gratitude, Victoria

Thorough, high quality, attention to detail, friendly, timely and excellently priced...these are just some of the qualities of Thiago Pelisson and his team! I was searching for a contractor to power wash and paint/stain house, decks and porch for my mother. She is not accustomed to hiring and as a widow and senior citizen, she was anxious about the finding/hiring process. Her house has cedar shingles, many damaged due to weather & woodpeckers! I contacted Thiago and he promptly got back to me to set up time to meet my mom & see the house to provide an estimate. My mom was SO impressed! Thiago was friendly and took time to take thorough look at the home. He listened to my mom, answered questions and gave her a great sense of comfort and confidence. He provided a detailed quote that including carpenter work, power washing, and materials at excellent price. His team arrived and they were all friendly, efficient, hard working and quality work! The prep work they did on the house to ensure paint didn't get on windows, doors, even the doorbell went WAY beyond expectations! Attention to detail was incredible - every nook was covered. Thiago came to the home twice during the project (approximately 4 days for all phases) to ensure quality. He even had carpenter return to fix area on chimney that she didn't even know had rotted - and he didn't jack up the price to have it done. The house looks great and it was a relief to trust Thiago and his crew. I've recommended him to friends, as has my mom and will hire him again without hesitation!

We recently had Todd build an extension from our garage over our patio. Todd researched the materials needed to accomplish what was needed to get this project done. Once he started, along with Bruce, it took them only 6 days to complete. They were here from early morning steadily working until late afternoon each day. Todd was very particular about his work and made sure that it was done with the utmost professionalism. I would highly recommend him for any type of home projects. Job well done!

Karen has been such a blessing! Every time I come home after she's cleaned my house looks fantastic. She is very accommodating and is responsive to any of my requests. She gets a lot done every time, always doing the regular tasks and something extra too. Always get a reminder to make sure I still need her to come which is a plus. Having her come twice a week is so helpful and reassuring to know that my house always remains spotless!

Elaine has been cleaning my home for almost one year. She knows exactly what has to be done and always goes above and beyond what needs to be done. She moves the furniture to clean under and behind everything and the kitchen and bathrooms are always spotless. She is not only hardworking and cares about what she does, but she is also a wonderful and kind person. I look forward to seeing her each week. I am very fortunate to have found her, and I would highly recommend her.

When you start thinking about remodeling your home you look for a trusted partner to help realize the wish-list as well as look out over the shoulders for the unexpected. with a full work schedule for self and wife, we also needed a one-stop shop for peace of mind execution. I found both readily available with Bharti and she was very quickly able to translate the wish lists into meaningful execution and design blocks. She was accomodative for late changes to design as well as for our schedules with after office drop-ins on updates and next steps. the best part of this experience was thoroughness and follow-through from Bharti with the parts, with the labor and generally with the project. We ended up demo and rebuilding our kitchen and completely transforming our basement. I am very happy with the end product and timelines and would definitely re-engage Bharti and team for subsequent projects

Dan and his brother were terrific helping us move heavy furniture up and down two flights of stairs and help with proper hanging of a very heavy mirror. Odd job but they were responsive, focused, professional and a pleasure to have around. Will definitely invite them back to help with other home improvement projects. They gave us lots of reasonably priced recommendations and estimates on a variety of projects. Wide set of skills! A+ Thank you!

Joe, first of all thank you! My family and I are very thankful we found you. I am sure we will talk again in the near future. Martelle Builders are nothing short of professional, responsible, but most of all AMAZING at what they do. I have built a few houses and I have had my share of terrible contractors but Martelle Builders by far exceeded all expectations. There are contractors that will just go into a job and just do it, and then there is Martelle Builders, who treats his job as these houses were of his own. It is more than just the money for these guys. Oh, and did I mention they framed my new construction mid-winter?? Do NOT hesitate to hire MB... I am very glad I didn't.

We hired Dan to stain our 2 decks. We highly recommend Dan! His work was done so well - meticulous, beautifully done and he left the work site clean at the end of every work day. We had to work around the weather and Dan kept in touch throughout the project. His price was very reasonable. The final estimate based on the site visit ended up being maybe $20 more than the one we received online. This was very fair because the deck had some finicky spots that would take a lot of time. (This is in contrast to another Thumbtack referral who more than doubled his initial online estimate.) We will definitely hire Dan hire for any future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
