Overall our experience was amazing!! Everyone enjoyed the food very much and they were prompt about timing. We did not have to worry about any steps along the way which made our experience a lot more relaxing. The only issue we had was that none of the staff brought us a plate of food, which we were told would happen. We were so busy talking to our guests during the wedding that food was hard to think about. Other than that we’d highly recommend!!

I can not say enough great things about Rich Stein. From the moment he walked in, Rich and Paul Kane had a great energy and presence that added to the buzz of my wedding day. They were communicating and engaging. All of that would have been for nothing if the food was not good. The food was EXCELLENT. The eggplant rollatini was incredible and everyone talked about how good it was. The food was fresh and flavorful. I can't forget the broccoli rabe and sausage. Paul was great in that he put his hands to do whatever was needed to help, from appetizers to the ice to cake. I also want to throw in that, this being a backyard wedding not many people wanted this small affair but Rich took the job and made this small backyard wedding feel like a much larger wedding with the quality of food. Rich and Paul far surpassed any of the praise of previous reviews and I don't think this review can show how appreciative I am of Rich Stein for making my wedding day special. Thank you, Rich. Thank you, Paul.

Five starts isn't even enough for my experience with Scott Murray. If you have an opportunity, hire Scott for your event! Here's my experience to prove why: My Mom just turned 70 and we wanted to give her a party on the beach. This meant that the party was in a state that neither she nor anyone in the family lives in. Hiring the caterer (from 300 miles away) was my responsibility. Thumbtack to the rescue! I got three bids and spoke with all of them, but Scott's reviews were the best and his initial menu and bid were the most sophisticated, so I chose him. Scott was super responsive from the very beginning. He had great ideas on the menu and helped guide the decision-making from choosing menu items, to start times and to helping me stay within budget. A+ for communications skills. I felt comfortable and in good hands from the first email, through our phone conversations, right up to the big day. On the day of the party, he and his delightful staffer, Celia, arrived exactly on time and began to prep. They were both charming and fun and efficient. I knew our space was challenging - small for the number of guests we had - but you would not have known that from the way Scott and Celia handled everything. Food was served exactly on time, beautifully, and was absolutely delicious. And the menu was challenging too - lobsters for 22 people expertly cooked, steak that was grilled to perfection (outside, in another location!), amazing side dishes, apps and dessert. Honest to God, I really don't know how they did it. And that's the beauty of hiring this team. They made it look super easy, they charmed all of my guests, made food that was some of the best I have had, and cleaned up after themselves so the place looked better than we found it. The leftovers (which they packed up!) were just as good (if not even better) than when 1st served. I cannot recommend Scott Murray enough.

Susan and her team catered my wedding at a rustic, outdoorsy site in central Connecticut. Susan was a pleasure to work with from the beginning of the planning process: she was quick to return emails and phone calls, came up with great ideas that fit our vision and our dietary preferences, was very organized, and always had a fabulous sense of fun. The guests at our wedding loved all the food, but particularly a cheese table she set up during the cocktail hour that looked amazing and had some of the loveliest, creamiest, most flavorful cheese they'd ever seen in one place. Susan was delightful to work with and I highly recommend considering Seaflour foods for your event.

What a great job by Joe and his catering team at Angelo's Market & catering. The food was out of this world and the presentation was as if I was on a Iron Chef episode. It could not have gone any better and I definitely am going to be using Joe again. Thanks again. Robert S.

I have ordered many food dishes from Gwen Robinson over the past 5 years. They were all delicious and creative. My favorite, I'll think, are the eggplant parmessan vegan style with homemade cheese and the cheesy corn- rice casserole with cashew pimento cheese. It has a wonderful buttery rich flavor without all the unhealthy fats. She is very creative and can put together many raw vegan recipes that don't taste like salads but fill you up and you will never be bored. Zuccihini pasta with homemade tomato sauce and broccoli with red pepper and sunflower salad are some of my favorite raw vegan recipes. I believe she will come up with a healthy menu that will satisfy your appetite and help your health as well. Make sure to try her extra moist and flavorful carrot cake and breads. Gwen also makes wonderful vegan burgers all from scratch that can be taken as a lunch with homemade pickles and garnishings on homemade buns.

Eric and his staff provided a great menu, for a great value. Many of our wedding guests complimented the taste and variety of food, so we felt confident that we made the right choice. They presented everything in a timely manner, and were very professional the day of. Their service went above expectations, assisting with everything we requested and then some. We were very happy.

I hired Good Food Catering for a shower in my home for approximately 25 people. I was offered a variety of appetizers and dinner items to choose from. The food was timely delivered, set up, served and cleared without interrupting the shower whatsoever. Most of all, the food was delicious! My guests really enjoyed the variety and there was plenty of food for seconds which many took advantage of. I was able to enjoy the shower and not worry about the food, serving or clean up!

Anepexperience catered my daughters’ graduation luau and made it a truly exquisite experience. The Hawaiian themed foods and appetizers were phenomenal. The presentation was so aesthetically pleasing that our guests were in awe. Chef Oneil and staff were very professional, knowledgeable, curteous and an absolute pleasure to deal with. I look forward to working with Anepexperience on every event I host in the future. They did such an amazing job. I couldn't have hired a better company. My girls are still thankful for how well the event turned out. I couldn't have done it without the help of Anexperience. Highly recommended.

Laurie and her husband catered our wedding in the hills of Ashfield, MA. They were absolutely outstanding! The food was delicious, they were so patient with us while arranging everything, and made planning very easy and hassle-free. They even accommodated us to allow for an ice cream sundae bar on site. They are very organized and helped ease our minds about forgetting anything. Their staff was very friendly and ensured everyone was happy with the amount of food they had, as well as ensuring everything tasted good. I cannot say enough nice things about this company. They really made our special day perfect. Our guests have not stopped raving about the food since. Laurie was so involved that she almost felt like a day of organizer, she is so helpful and amazing. Thank you so much to Laurie and her team for being such an incredible catering service!

Michael has helped me in many ways. First of all I need help with my brother. Didn't have enough time to get food ready for my brother to eat. Plus shopping and take care of a family. Michael would go shopping and buy the best ingredients to make the best dishes. That my brother enjoyed. Fruit salad, pasta salad, chicken salad. Pasta dishes, home made soups, beef stew. Also Michael would make home made bread, pies, cookies, and cakes. He would even try new recipes out. Which my brother loved very much. Michael has gone above and beyond to help make my brother days better for him. My brother looks forward to Michael's visit. Michael make food on a regular basis every week. His quality of his work is excellent and outstanding. Always on time with my brothers meals. The job was done in New Britain Connecticut. I would refer Michael to anyone of my family and friends. Excellent and Outstanding.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
