Sara is THE BEST! I cannot recommend her highly enough! She has provided Spanish lessons for myself and coworkers in a professional setting and I have been super impressed from the start. She is polished and professional - always on time! She is flexible and receptive to feedback and requests. We provided her with specific topics and scenarios that we wanted to be conversational in, and she devised lesson plans to accommodate our needs. She teaches tenses and grammatical concepts in a progression that is logical and easy to digest. She's careful not to expose you to concepts or challenges before you can reasonably handle them, and is great at making things feel approachable and clear. Her knowledge of the language (and other languages!) is very impressive and she is able to provide a lot of insight about dialects and cultural aspects that you wouldn't have as a non-native speaker. We started the lessons on different levels of experience with Spanish, ranging from beginner to intermediate, and she handled that with grace; she is able to challenge each of us at the levels we need. As a person, she is absolutely lovely - warm and and pleasant, encouraging, supportive, funny, and fun to work with. She is never impatient or condescending, and she uses mistakes as opportunities to provide clarity - she does not make you feel dumb! On the rare occasion there is something she doesn't know, she will be the first to admit it, and look it up, and celebrate that we've all learned something new. I feel she genuinely loves the language, academically and otherwise, and wants to see people succeed in learning it. We are lucky to have her!

I had felt very nervous just before i started to take English lessons from Raul. I had some anxiety and a negative thought about i will never learn English. After taking my first class, i changed my negative thought. I have been taking English class for 2 months and i feel the differences and improvements on my language skills. Raul is a perfect teacher. He is so professional and informed about how to teach. He makes me more courageous to learn English every day. He is also very patient, kind, friendly and understanding. He shares all his informations, sources and experiences about what you want to learn. Learning with him is a big joy. I feel not only happy but also very lucky to know him and to take class from him.

As part of my job in communications with the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of genocide and other mass atrocities, I took Spanish lessons with Laura multiple times per week from January of 2016 to December of 2017. While I began this endeavor with a rudimentary understanding of Spanish, my abilities – especially with regards to my professional duties – rapidly improved. We worked together on a variety of communications products and translations (both English-Spanish and Spanish-English). Due to the nature of my work, translated items featured specialized political and diplomatic vocabularies. Over the course of our time together, we synthesized and translated a wide variety of documents including interviews with prominent actors in the field, recurring reports on efforts for the prevention of mass atrocities, reporting on events in the field, newsletters and other electronic communications, as well as a wide variety of other documents as they arose. These efforts required fast-paced work to meet tight deadlines and necessitated an understanding of concepts and vocabulary used in the field of human rights, international humanitarian law and mass atrocity prevention. The translated documents have been used for a wide variety of training initiatives for government officials around the world and by partnered entities, such as the Latin American Network for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention. In short: Laura provides a high-quality service and I would certainly recommend her to anyone (or any organization) looking for a private teacher or tutor, especially in the context of communications. She is very consistent and always came equipped with any customized materials or background research necessary to maximize the productivity of our sessions.

Julie is a really good teacher. She is very through with helping to get the proper pronunciation. Although I am far from fluent in spanish, I have received many compliments from spanish speakers regarding the fact that I don't speak with a heavy accent. She is also very patient and goes at the student's pace (I work full time and have 3 children so my learning spanish is really just a fun hobby).

I love the Italian language and culture and realized my speaking abilities from my university studies were rustier than I thought during a recent trip to Italy this past summer. Upon my return to the States, I immediately sought private tutoring and I could not be more satisfied in finding Mariateresa. I've seen vast improvement in my comprehension and speaking since I started taking lessons with her. The first couple months were focused on fundamentals and book work but now each lesson begins with about 30 mins of conversation (in Italian of course) before diving into books. I cannot recommend Mariateresa enough regardless of your comprehension level because not only does she challenge me every week to improve my skill but the time spent with her is very enjoyable and something I look forward to every week.

Elijah is a brilliant tutor. He has a unique combination of qualities: deep intelligence and sincere compassion. My son had never taken a physics course and yet in three months Elijah had taught him so well he was able to score a 700 on the SAT subject test. Whatever the topic (we have also used him to tutor in Spanish and history) Elijah is able to instruct and motivate. He is a terrific role model. We have very much enjoyed having him in our home. Elijah is a master teacher. You can find less expensive tutors, but none better. He is worth every penny. He has helped my son gain academic confidence in his patient, quiet way. We will always be grateful to him.

Saul is a very talented and patient teacher. He takes his time getting to know what you want out of lessons, and is very flexible in his approach. When one way wasn't working, he found another. As someone who desperately wanted and needed to learn guitar, but sorely lacking in "natural ability", he was a perfect fit for me as a teacher. He brought me a long, LONG way in a short period of time. I highly recommend him!

About

Fluent City classes are geared towards learning, but we also make sure that the process is super fun. Our energetic and approachable teachers create a relaxed environment for you to take on the challenge of learning a language alongside like-minded people. There is a huge difference between knowing how to speak a language and knowing how to teach it, and we pride ourselves on hiring teachers who are ridiculously good at what they do: explaining how the language works and getting you to speak it immediately. Our beginner classes are usually taught by non-native speakers…on purpose! They are often Americans who learned the language themselves as adults. Our teachers understand, firsthand, everything that goes into learning a language because they were once students of the language themselves, which informs the very way they explain how it works to you. Native speakers or teachers with native-level fluency usually teach our higher-level classes.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
