Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

Should I tip the garage door repairman?

It’s not expected that you tip garage door repairmen, and normally they’re not expecting a tip for their services. However, it’s always a kind gesture to tip for excellent and friendly service.

Is it dangerous to replace a garage door spring?

Yes, it can be dangerous to undertake a garage door spring repair yourself. Fixing it requires having a working knowledge of how a garage door works and understanding how the parts work. A door can fall on you, and loaded springs can suddenly release and hit you. For this reason, it’s recommended you call a pro to replace or fix your garage door spring.

How often do garage door springs break?

Garage door springs break every three to seven years, depending on its quality and condition. For example, rust and cold weather can shorten the lifespan of a torsion spring.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Our garage door stopped working for some time and we put off getting it repaired because we were dreading the cost to repair it. I recently contacted daystar garage door. He responded within the hour and was able to fit us into his schedule for the same day. He quickly resolved the issue and fixed the garage for us within 48 hours (might I add, it was a holiday weekend). I would definitely recommend daystar garage doors to anyone. Thank you again!

I requested, on a Sunday evening, a pro to repair a garage door. Upstream Garage quickly offered to have a technician here in an hour, and did. Within 2 hours of submitting my request 2 coil springs were replaced, all moving parts were lubed, and the door worked fine again (and for less than another pro quoted me). Great service, quality work and a good value.

Moved into a new condo that had a wonky garage door. Messaged Ronald yesterday at 5pm to see if he could come repair it. I scheduled him at 11:30am today. He arrived 20min early(!) and waited patiently in the alley for me to get home. He quickly assessed the issue and went to work. He installed new torsion springs and calibrated everything in 45min. The price was fair. Will absolutely use Ronald again for all my garage door needs.

Angel is the best. I initially had three appointments scheduled for free estimates and had to cancel two due to scheduling conflicts. I kept Angel's appointment because his reviews were the highest. I was not disappointed. He arrived on time, diagnosed the problems with my two garage doors openers and explained to me how he would repair them. He was extremely professional and personable, an excellent combination in a business man. I hired him on the spot and he came a couple days later to install two new garage door openers. He finished within three hours and explained how they work with ease. I was more than satisfied and promised to write a good review , but he requested I get approval from my wife before writing this review. Classy. Suffice it to say, she's very happy. When we plan to change the garage doors, I'll be calling All Door Installation, Inc. I've even already advertised All Door Installation services on my neighborhood GroupMe chat. Thanks again, Angel.

My experience with Ronald was excellent. I messaged him on a Friday evening just out of curiosity to see how much it would cost for the project I needed. He responded immediately and followed up the next day asking if I had questions. All I needed to do was to purchase the garage opener from a local hardware store and he would take care of installation plus repair to the existing garage door. He showed up almost an hour before our appointment which I appreciated. He explained to me what he was doing and noted that in order to fix an issue he needed to replace something unexpected, but the additional fee was minimal. If ever I need future repairs to this or another garage I’m surely contacting him. I will also be referring to friends and neighbors.
