My review: Jose of EES Services arrived on the date and time promised, in fact, he showed up early to accommodate my schedule. He was professional, polite, and thoughtful in our interaction. He did the job thoroughly and completely, and worked in the pouring rain to get my gutter cleaned! I couldn't be happier with the result and I highly recommend EES Services for any of your home repair needs.

David and his team are better than his incredible reviews. I knew when he responded that the services would be excellent because he described what the issue sounded to be. He was right, and my repair was reasonably priced and the work quality was excellent. He spent time to explain and show us what the issue was, how to avoid it in the future, and how to make adjustments ourselves in the future. This repair service is top-notch!

Outstanding experience with Home Pro - Air Duct Cleaning. They were punctual. very professional, tidy, and articulate in explaining the plan they were going to take... This all spoke to the intangibles I look for in any contractor we hire. Beyond the intangibles, they provided poof of the state prior, and also post service. Seeing the results, it was clear they did a very thorough job, and the result (documented in pictures shown) demonstrated there attention to detail and flawless execution. Net is, they have it both... Intangibles and the execution. We could not be happier with our experience and would highly recommend them as a result. They will be doing all duct cleaning services for our home in the future.

We had a long list of things to be done before listing our home for sale. Jenrii with Ordonez Home Improvement did an excellent job tackling every project. Jenrii enclosed the landing where we had removed a handicap ramp - this was not an easy repair and required good carpentry skills. He also installed new closet wood bi-fold doors in a basement bedroom. Again, not an easy task as they had to be “fitted” to the closet. His troubleshooting skills were evident here. He replaced two old light switches, four electric outlets, and a bathroom vanity light fixture. These were only a few of the things he did. Jenrii is very professional, polite, thorough, and responsive. He texted us each morning on the days he worked to let us know what time to expect him. He works quickly and does excellent work for extremely reasonable rates. I would not HESITATE to recommend him for small jobs to larger remodeling projects. I was a commercial real estate project manager for 15 yrs, building shopping centers and office buildings - so I can definitively say that Jenrri knows what he is doing and does it very, very well.

Greg cleaned the basement carpet in a timely manner and at a reasonable cost. He offered additional services but I declined simply because this is a rental property and I did not want to absorb any additonal costs.

We asked for proposals for duct and vent cleaning. We got a number of fast responses. We decided to pursue The Best Air Quality and Restoration based on reviews, cost proposed and the credentials and info on their website. The response from the firm was quick and we were able to schedule at my convenience. The vendor showed up on time and did the work thoroughly and professionally and even added some additional services we needed without excessive charges. I was very pleased with the work and the personnel. I asked them to follow up with me when this service was needed again. I would definitely recommend them.

We give ten gold stars to RestorClean for 100% professionalism, excellent communication, efficient, timeliness, friendliness, and their outstanding knowledge of their field. In addition to doing damage control, they provided us with useful tips and suggestions for smarter maintenance of our property. RestorClean restored our attic which had become impassible after a roofing job we had done. The dust that fell through to the attic from removal of a 70-year-old slate roof covered every box, every stored carpet, every painting, all the possessions we had stored there. In some places, the fine black dust was half an inch thick -- it had infiltrated every surface and crack. In a very low-celinged and cramped space, RestorClean more than got the job done; they also removed mold in the attic. They re-boxed all of our items, and they provided the boxes, labeled the boxes, and took away the old boxes; they organized the space as it has never been before. It is immaculate. They even vacuumed the ceiling of the attic. We can't say enough positive. They are a pleasure to work with and the price was right.

PJ is the best hands down!! He was at the service property within an hour of speaking to me. I am a real estate agent and needed closet door installation in a 100+ year old DC rowhouse. Of course, nothing is level in a house this old. He seamlessly installed solid wood bi-fold louvre doors in a closet that had a severe slope at the top. It looks flawless! The owner of the house was thrilled because she didn’t think it could work, and my job was made 100% easier because my client was happy. Will definitely use him again for my listings!

I have been looking for quite a bit trying to find a local pro to perform carpet re-stretching but had no luck. When I first posted on Thumbtack, Orlando was the first to reply but I noticed he was roughly an hour and a half from my house. I messaged him to see if he services my area and he said yes. I then asked him what his availability is on Saturday afternoon and he said he could take care of it the next day (Sunday). We agreed and he showed up promptly at 10AM and took care of a few areas in my home where I needed the carpet restretched. He also had all the right tools and you could tell he knew what he was doing. I would recommend Orlando to anyone as his work is top quality!

I hired Antonio, of Renaissance Restoration, to do several projects. They included: 1) rebuilding the curb in my shower that was installed improperly by a different contractor; 2) Finishing a half-bath remodel that included refinishing and painting the drywall after they had be damaged from wallpaper removal, installing a vanity including plumbing and trim; 3) Repairing water-damaged hardwood floors and refinishing hardwood floors in the kitchen, dining room, bathroom, hall and stairway; 4) Expanding the kitchen entrance by 2 inches, repairing and refinishing the drywall and wood floor. I was at first skeptical to hire one person to complete all these tasks due to the variety of skills required. Fortunately, Antonio had all the skills necessary to complete the job expertly and timely. His attention to detail and vast experience with carpentry and contracting work in general proved to be invaluable. The end result of each project was even better than I had expected. Needless to say I would hire Antonio again for my next project.

As I write this review, my husband and I have added additional projects in our house to be completed. We moved into our home a year ago and it needs a lot of cosmetic and appliance upgrades. The work is done professionally and correctly. If you have a concern, Jose will address your concerns and even give you ideas if your stuck on what to do. He knows what he’s talking about and will do all he can to work around your budget. **Be upfront and realistic in regards to the work you need done and he will be more than reasonable with pricing. All the workers are friendly and respectful. They work non-stop, only stopping for a lunch break. While working, some of the workers engaged with my kids and they were really excited. They are very timely and punctual. If they say they will be at your house at 6am, they are waiting in their cars at 5:50a waiting to knock on your door at 6. Overall, I would hire Brandon Contractors again and highly recommend to anyone in need of house repairs/remodeling services. The prices are reasonable and the work completed will not disappoint you!

Gary was terrific. He cleared a bunch of junk from my rental property including an old fridge, stove, box spring, etc. When he saw the photos of the contents, he rescheduled so he could bring a bigger truck the next day. He stayed in excellent communication, which is always appreciated by anxious homeowners, and he did a super job. Highly recommended.

I hired Tko Water Restoration to repair the ceiling in my downstairs neighbor's unit as their ceiling suffered from water damage (mold, etc.) caused by the bathroom in my unit. Ahmed came to the unit to check out the situation, and proposed to treat the mold first before replacing the ceiling due to health concerns. He was very thorough and clear about what he was going to do, and his quote is one of the most honest I have received, so I decided to hire him for this project right away. The project took 4 days in total, with 2 days of waiting period for the mold treatment to take effects. The final results are polished and to both me and my neighbor's satisfaction. He and his partner did a fantastic job and at a reasonable price. I recommend Ahmed/Tko Water Restoration to everyone who needs similar types of work done.

My initial experience with Mr. Litman was when I had a tree removed from my house that had fallen during a storm. Most recently, he has been doing repairs on a rental property - including painting and removal of trash left by tenants. I am very please with his work and would recommend him to others.

VIP Steemer was excellent in their customer service from the first contact with them. They showed up on a holiday as it was December 23 when the flood happened in our home. They responded the same night after hours and began water restoration services immediately. They were friendly, fast and continued to come back daily until the work was completed. They sent in ladies to clean up the mud left from the water damage after the rooms were dry and they had begun the removal of damaged drywall and floorboards. They were there to help us and jumped in to do the work when our insurance company left us hanging for days and were not willing to send out contractors to begin the process of restoration for days on end due to it being the holiday season between Christmas and New Years. We called VIP Steemer after the initial night of cleanup and found out they could handle the complete process immediately and contracted with them to do the entire job from start to finish. They worked with us on inventory of our damaged and salvaged household goods for the insurance company claim, packaging and storage in a facility in order for the restoration process to begin to restore our house for the contracting portion of the work. It was a seamless process and they were careful to take excellent care of all our goods as if it were their own. Our items were completely safe with them. Julian Iwundu worked with us and developed a relationship with us throughout the entire process keeping us abreast of the progress and inquiring on our satisfaction. If something was not to our liking during the contractor phase, they went out of their way to fix it immediately. Julian Iwundu walked us through how to send our insurance check to the mortgage company to get it signed off so we could get it back to sign it and turn it over to his company when the work was finally completed and was very patient in the process (homeowners may not know that this occurs when there are damages to your property on an insurance claim when you have a mortgage with a large claim). They even brought everything back in excellent condition from the storage facility when the work was completed. We could not be more pleased with the entire job from start to finish. We were sad to see them go when everything was done that is how happy we were to have them around during the time they spent working on our home. We will definitely contact them again if we need any recovery, cleaning, contractor or moving services because of the level of trust they inspired in us.

The team at Restoration 1 was very professional and thorough in performing mold remediation and removal of water damage in our master bathroom. Cory explained the process clearly during the estimate and provided a very detailed list of work that would be done. Patrick and Darin worked hard the entire 10 hour day removing the water damage and mold. The price was fair and the work was complete very quickly. I hope we do not need Restoration 1's service in the future, but would not hesitate to call them again if we do.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.
