David and his crew responded quickly (on a weekend!) to our request for quotes when we realized at the last minute that our "unpack it yourself" moving truck would not fit anywhere in our new neighborhood in Alexandria. David was able to schedule a crew, (with only a day's notice!) to meet us at the ABF terminal in Manassas, unload our ABF trailer onto two of his trucks, transport our belongings to our new home, and then unload those two trucks into our four-story home (with very narrow hallways). The two trucks/3-man crew met us at the ABF terminal at 10:00 am and waited patiently for almost 45 minutes while ABF queued up our trailer. They then worked for almost two hours, in truly horrible wind/rain/cold temperatures, to carefully load our furniture and boxes into two trucks. I can't say enough about the 3 crew members (none of whose names I caught - they were not native English speakers but that was honestly not a problem) - they worked extremely hard, non-stop, in conditions that would have caused anyone else to quit. By the time the ABF trailer was unloaded, they were soaked with rain and very cold. The offload into our new home went off without a hitch - we arrived at the house around 1:30 p.m. and they were finished unloading two trucks (into a four-floor townhouse!) by 3:45 p.m. Again, I was so impressed by the moving crew - they didn't look very big but were able to carry multiple very heavy pieces of furniture up several flights of stairs with no problems - in addition, they were able to get several pieces that I didn't think would fit in the stairways inside, thus saving me a lot of money in storage fees. I feel I should point out that during this time I bought coffee, donuts, and a full lunch for the moving crew - in addition to tipping them $20 each at the end of the day. I don't say this to try and make myself sound awesome, I say it because not enough people do this for their moving crews - if your crew works their asses off for you and does it in absolutely miserable weather conditions, you need to take care of them. These guys more than earned the free food and the tip, their work is really to be commended. The crew did not unpack any boxes, nor did they put anything together for us, as we did not request that service. Although David, the boss, was not actually present during the move, he was extremely conscientious and called me several times throughout the course of the day to check in with me. In addition, the couple of times I needed to ask him some questions, he always picked up the phone when I called. Finally, I think the price of $100/hour was fair - several other companies quoted us anywhere from $110-$130 an hour and I honestly don't know if those other companies would have worked in the conditions these guys worked in. All in all, fantastic job, highly recommend this company.

It's a real local company located in Rockville MD with a real office and a real owner name Ali and Liudmila. He showed up on time, and worked very quickly. I was surprised at the level of care they took with my furniture (they wrapped everything in pads). The entire loading process only took a few hours, and they were equally fast and careful with the unloading at her new apartment. Given how little they charged for the move, I expected to have a bunch of yahoos show up and toss everything into a pickup. :) But the movers were very professional, two loaders and a manager (Kevin) who kept on top of the workers to make sure that they did everything correctly. Kevin checked that all items were properly loaded and secured in the moving truck prior to their loading the next series of things.Very impressed, and would definitely use them again

My experience with Smart Moving was awesome! The movers arrived early, were efficient in loading and unloading the moving truck, made sure to protect my furniture and boxes with fragile items, and were very kind. I will absolutely use Smart Moving the next time I move. The price was also a great deal compared to other companies.

Everyone I worked with starting the week before I moved to the day-of was very professional. The amount quoted was the amount I paid (no unexpected changes). The three movers were pros and treated the furniture with care. The used furniture blankets and materials to protect and secured everything in the moving truck. A-1 Moving Company even worked worked with me to add an additional stop into the itinerary. I highly recommend A-1 Moving Company.

The movers were remarkable! They were on time and went WAY above and beyond expectations. They worked 10 hours nearly non stop loading then unloading a 26' uhaul truck, two 12' uhaul trailers, and a van! During this extremely stressful move, they helped alleviate my near mental breakdown from the many issues that kept arising during our closing. Couldn't have done this move without them. I 1000% recommend these guys!!

After getting many quotes from larger companies that I did not feel comfortable with, I found Great Nation Movers on Thumbtack and felt as if I was getting a personal and professional estimate. The manager was extremely helpful in explaining to me exactly what would happen on the day of the move. He was very understanding as to our situation. We were moving out of state and we needed a fast delivery from one state to another 800 miles away. When calling larger corporate companies, they did not understand and were trying to make it a longer time spread than job needed be. After talking to the manager here, he understood what we were needing to be done, took a full inventory of what needed to be moved from both houses and gave me a very fair price for the job. On the day of the move, guys showed up very early (as per my request) and worked efficiently to pack up all of our belonging into the moving truck. We were pack, loaded, travelled across 5 states and unpacked the following afternoon! This was greatly appreciated by myself and my family! Highly Recommend.

My move was a bit unconventional as it was during the Memorial Day holiday weekend and everything seemed to be delayed. I had two movers who showed up right on time and were very professional. I think if I had three movers and a bigger truck the move would've gone faster and smoother. I did end up helping move some things to speed up the process. My movers took great car to wrap furniture and since I had to stops on my move, made sure to keep my items organized. Since my move took longer than expected, the movers had to return the next day to finish things. Again they were prompt and arrived when they said they would! Overall I'm pleased with my move and the one critique I have is, man power/speed.

Terrence and his co-worker Keith were great! They quickly loaded my stuff into the moving truck and didn't scratch or leave any marks on the walls. Upon arrival at my new location they quickly unloaded my stuff and even went above and beyond fixing my dining room table which hadn't been assembled correctly since my last move. Awesome customer service and great price! Will have no problems hiring them again for my next move! :-)

Chris and Alex were wonderful and the move was great! I have never had such a positive experience with a moving company. They were prompt, called me when they were five minutes out, very polite, introduced themselves to me, asked me to show them all of the items to be moved and then went about getting it done. They plastic wrapped all of the furniture and carefully placed each piece in the truck, unloading the same way at the destination. It was a cold, rainy day, but that didn't stop them from getting the entire move done in less than 3 hours. I had mostly big furniture pieces to move (sofas, oversized chairs, ottomans, bookshelf, dressers. The price was very reasonable and when I had to add a couple of pieces of furniture a few days before the move, I emailed the information and they promptly sent a revised invoice for the additional items. A first rate business, from how quickly Ashley in the office responded to my request, to how professional they were. Would definitely use Clarkes again and highly recommend them to anyone. Great Job and thanks much!

My experience was superb! I'll begin with the great customer service over the phone. As a first time home owner I was skeptical of hiring a moving company at the last minute and one I wasn't too familiar with; however, Ben and his team packed 2 storage units to their truck and moved the boxes and heavy furniture to my 4 level town home on Easter weekend with No complaints all smiles. Hard workers, I must say and quick. As I sit here I still can't believe they managed to do this without damages and my very very narrow halls and stairwells. I'll definitely hire them again and would Highly recommend to anyone moving. My fiancé and I are still talking about how great things went. Thanks again Moving With Us. You all made my transition easy!! and I'm so grateful

Adrian and his team are awesome. We had trouble with not knowing when the truck would arrive and then if it would fit in the loading dock. We actually wound up changing the move time twice and he flexed to make sure it happened. They were attentive and ensured to flag any damage they saw as they were unloading the truck. We’d definitely use them again.

Gary was terrific. He cleared a bunch of junk from my rental property including an old fridge, stove, box spring, etc. When he saw the photos of the contents, he rescheduled so he could bring a bigger truck the next day. He stayed in excellent communication, which is always appreciated by anxious homeowners, and he did a super job. Highly recommended.

I contacted them for a fast quote... a guy responded to me right away!!! The movers were prompt, professional and efficient with getting my items loaded on the truck in no time. The elevator stopped working but they kept going using the stairs without a fuss. This was a small job; and I needed a company willing to do the work without charging me an absorbent amount, and they were fair with negotiating. I’m very, very impressed and will be referring them to my family and friends.

1 guy showed up about 5 minutes late the other guy 30. I was very clear about them needing hand trucks (would have been easier for them) but they didn’t have any. Job took as long as expected. I would definitely hire them again. Communication just needs to be worked on.

I had a fantastic moving experience with Ernest Moving! I spoke with them last minute (two days before the move) and they were very accommodating. They were ten minutes early, worked VERY quickly and carefully, they were friendly and incredibly efficient. They carefully wrapped my fragile furniture with moving blankets and shrink wrap and wrapped any furniture with doors/drawers with shrink wrap. The truck, three movers and the blankets/wrapping was all included in the flat rate quote. Many hourly services will draw the process out to rack up their bill. I like that this was flat rate and speedy. Best moving experience I've ever had (and we all know moving is not fun). 100% would recommend to family and friends and would hire again myself.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
