I am being tutored in Spanish from Julissa. My sessions have been educational and fun. Julissa builds the curriculum around the students strengths. Although my tutoring session is 1 hour, she spends her own time at home preparing for my lessons. Julissa is professional and punctual and I am extremely proud to have her as my tutor.

Bob is excellent! He helped my daughter get over a "slump" in algebra, and now she is doing really well. He is punctual, professional, and kind. I love that he also shared stories of his own learning experiences, teaching, and family life with my daughter. Highly recommended!

Mr. Miller has been working with my daughter with her reading disability for over a year now and she just had her best report card ever. He often discussed with me and my daughter what she is doing in school to make sure they are on the same page. She enjoys going to tutoring, as much as a 12 year old can!. He's friendly, easy to talk to, easy to schedule sessions with. I am so glad we made the decision to use him as her tutor and will continue to use him as long as she needs additional help.

John is great as a tutor. He is able to break down complicated concepts so that any level student can understand them. He was great for helping both me and my younger sister in statistics, chemistry, algebra, geometry and whatever else we needed.

Our son was failing Algebra miserably when we found Dr. Dave. After a few weekly meetings Dr. Dave, we saw slight increases in his average and by the end of the quarter, our son went from an F to a C+! But equally important his confidence grew too! Our son was always enthusiastic to work with Dr.Dave and frequently came home with some new idea or tip he learned on how to work a problem. Now, we won't say that our son has fallen in love with Math but surely Dr. Dave has shown him that Math is not something to fear - you just gotta figure out the best way to tackle it. Thank you Dr. Dave! We're going to need you for the Fall semester too! - The Traores'

        About

I am 30 years old and was born and raised in Philadelphia. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and master's degree in counseling. I've worked at the Youth Study Center of Philadelphia counseling juvenile criminals. I've played guitar most of my life and piano for several years. I'm specializing in music therapy but love teaching music! Not only would I teach clients how to play guitar/piano, but also how it can be used as a therapeutic outlet and why. I specialize in working with people with addictions. This is a new "business." I would offer the first session for free. I'm available for strictly teaching beginner guitar/piano though. I was formerly an all-state soccer goalie. I'm available for soccer coaching/goalie training. Prices and times are negotiable.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

        • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
        • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
