Nathalie C. says, "I can't say enough great things about Matthew and his guys at Vortex Roofing & Construction! Less than 1 minute after I submitted my proposal request via Thumbtack, I was receiving a call from Jorge and discussing my issue: I had a leak above a window and there was a weird off-ridge vent above the window that I suspected was involved in the problem. He arranged for his son, Matthew, who handles the southern portion of their territory (I'm in South Lake County, FL) to come the next day and take a look. Throughout this whole process, both were extremely responsive and pleasant. After that, I dealt with Matthew exclusively. What a gem! He was so professional, explained everything clearly, and was honest and didn't try to upsell me, while still making sure I knew that there might be more issues uncovered as the work was being done. It turns out that the off-ridge vent was not only NOT installed up to code (way too low on the slope), but was NOT needed at all (the attic is self-ventilated via the ridge vents and the soffits) and was definitely the cause of my leak due to poor workmanship from the original roofers. I also asked him to check the rest of the roof for additional issues and he found that the end caps had never been installed on my ridge vents and that I had multiple exposed and corroded fasteners at the vents, which are a conduit for moisture infiltration, and prepared a proposal that included everything. I felt it was very reasonable, considering what needed to be done. I ran his proposal and what he told me, as well as the pictures that he sent me, by a professional engineer who is also a registered roof observer (you can't be too cautious!), who confirmed everything Matthew had said. No one had ever seen a vent installed that way! We agreed the vent needed to come off. Less than 24 hours later, Matthew returned with his crew to take care of everything, because he was concerned with the rain forecast we have for next week, as was I. They did a great job, even checking on an additional thing I thought I had spotted in a photo he had sent me, to reassure me it was not an issue and nothing needed to be done. Talk about honest. They also cleaned up after themselves before leaving. This is long, but I did say I couldn't say enough great things about them! Matthew was never impatient about all my questions, and even agreed to come later than planned when I discovered that my city's code requires that outside construction/repairs start after 9 am on Saturdays, but I texted him late on Friday night. After having had bad experiences with roofers in the past, I had been very gun-shy about calling anyone, until I saw an ad about Thumbtack on TV and I'm so happy I downloaded the app and saw all the great reviews other people left about Vortex Roofing. What a relief to have had this problem taken care of and to have found my roofer people for life :) Note that Vortex does accept credit cards but there is a 3.5% surcharge for that, which is the credit card company fee. The proposal comes with the roofer license (which you should always check independently via the MyFloridaLicense site) and their workman's comp insurance info, which is great."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What happens during a roofing inspection?

Roof inspectors are trained to look for signs of a failing roofing system that could lead to damage — especially water and structural damage. Your home's roofing materials may look great from the ground, but it's difficult to see potential damage unless you take a closer look. A roof inspector can do just that.

During an inspection, the professional will typically look for issues that may have occurred during installation and manufacturing. They’ll also keep an eye out for damage caused by normal wear and tear, as well as extreme weather events. They might also access your attic to see if there are signs of a leak in your roof.

Here’s a short list of common things a contractor will look out for during a roof inspection:

  • Damage caused by hail, wind, snow and rain
  • Missing, broken, buckling, curling or cracked shingles
  • Roof decay, rot, moss, mildew and mold
  • Rust around the flashing
  • Damaged chimneys and vents
  • Holes, gaps and punctures that could cause a roof leak
  • Water stains and ventilation issues

Hiring a roofing inspector prevents you from having to do the dangerous work of climbing onto your roof. Plus, inspectors know how to assess potential damage and determine the best way to repair your roof and prevent the need for more expensive repairs in the future. Start searching for a roof inspector on Thumbtack today.

When should I get my roof inspected?

Experts typically recommend that you have your roof professionally inspected at least once a year. But you also may want a licensed professional to inspect your roof during these circumstances:

  • You're buying or selling a home
  • You're filing an insurance claim
  • Before or after a contractor does major work on your roof

Search the Thumbtack site for experienced roof inspectors near you. You can contact them directly to set up a time to conduct the inspection, and learn more about their pricing structure and services.
