Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Every aspect of working with Dan and Angel was superb. The room was painted beautifully, not a drop of paint spilled! Additionally, their advice on future projects was very helpful. I would hire them again in an instant.

Sladan painted my pool deck in late April beginning of March after my pool was refinished... Price was the same as other quote with the difference that other quote included sealer and more than two hands of paint. The job was awful done, missing paint all over the deck surface, he pour paint inside a brand new ($8000.00) pool refinishing and all over the tiles. I am still trying to get it out!!! Unfortunately when the job was done I was out of town and the house keeper told me that the paint job looked really bad so he went over and put the second hand of paint which didn't really change the poorly done paint job. After 2 months the paint is coming out... I am really sad I have to leave this review. He did not do a good or even average job and he did not do what others were supposed to do with the same price. I tried to contact him about it and instead of coming over and fix the mess he left behind him he is ignoring me. Save your money and use someone else!!!

Wonderful experience! William and his team were affordable, punctual and professional and didn't hesitate when I asked for a few minor touch ups. We've already recommended them to the neighbors that have stopped by to compliment our new paint job!

I'm very pleased with the job done by George from Great Idea Painting Services. He was one of the first to respond to my request, but what made him stand out was that he actually came to the house to provide a quote. Sure, I know a company can give quote online by looking up a picture of your house on the internet, or being based off information provided by the homeowner, but I liked that fact that he was willing to stop by first. I did my due diligence and asked for license and insurance papers, which he gladly emailed to me. Also checked reviews. There was only one negative review I found when researching- you can't please them all! He pressured washed on one day, painted on another (there were a few days in between due to weather), and then came back for a few final touch-ups that we needed. His price was right, he is friendly, and has a ton of experience. You'll do well hiring George.

I hired Darius to paint the trim and soffit on my house. He required a deposit up front which I thought was strange. I've never had to put a deposit down before. Anyway, I gave him the deposit and then for the next two weeks, he had excuse after excuse as to why he couldn't make it to my house to do the job. I wouldn't hear from him until the day was almost over yet when he wanted the work, he was texting me first thing in the morning. Nice guy but not reliable. I ended up requesting my deposit back and he did refund my money.
