"My Thumbtack painting request returned numerous painting contractors who placed a bid to paint my 2700 square foot home. Part of my selection criteria included past customer reviews. At the time of selection, Tybor Painting had approximately 40 reviews where every single customer gave them a 5-star rating. After agreeing to hire Kevin from Tybor Painting, I expanded our initial project to include drywall re-build / repair, and base board installation. I had planned on hiring another contractor to complete the drywall and baseboards, but felt really good after meeting with Kevin. The professionalism displayed during our initial meeting and subsequent phone conversations (along with the past reviews) gave me confidence that his company would do a good job. Now that the project is completed, I wanted to write a comprehensive review to accurately reflect the project outcome. In short, the quality of the work was UNBELIEVABLE and FANTASTIC. Kevin, Jared and the rest of the Tybor Painting crew are a bunch of perfectionists. The painting lines are “straight as an arrow” and the there’s not one paint “streak” in my house. The drywall re-build / repair was “spot on” and they continually asked my wife and I to review what they completed for any areas they may have missed. They encouraged feedback from us and they certainly wanted to satisfy us as customers to keep their 5-star rating. In short, Kevin is obsessed with his 5-star rating and will do everything in his power to maintain it. As a customer, that is exactly the attribute you want from a contractor. For those of you who are looking to hire a painter, you won’t regret hiring Tybor Painting. If I could give them a higher rating than 5 stars, I certainly would."

"American Painters are the BEST painters I have dealt with in all my years! Not one complaint and that is remarkable in this day. Before finding this gem of a painting company- I hired two painting companies from Pro Referral-Home Depot =TimBarrettPainting INC and Jahangir Foroutan Payless Painting. Horrible experience- one took my $2500 deposit and did over $3000 in damages then walked off job.The other one thought I was a naive lady and tried to do a quick cheap job and when I questioned him about the the poor workmanship he packed up and left me with a mess. I waited about a year and a half looking for a good honest company. This company did not ask for one penny till the job was done and when I was fully happy. The painting crew was very professional and pleasant to be around. They made sure I was happy with every part of the process. If I saw anything that needed to be addressed, they simply said yes ma'am and took care of it. They actually spent the time to pressure clean the house correctly and most important -to do the simple repairs like caulking around windows, elastomeric the cracks, covered all my windows, etc. I have expensive pavers all around my house and they spent the time and money to lay good quality plastic down to protect them. My house turned out beautifully and looks great. Finally after all those other horrible painters these AMERICAN PAINTERS can actually call themselves real professional painters who go above and beyond what is expected. Thank you Bill, Willie, Phillip, and Lindsey. Bill you are awesome for taking care of everything and making sure we are 100% happy and satisfied!!!!!! At 100%plus I recommend them to anyone who wants an honest professional painting company who can do a fantastic job without trying to cut corners from start to finish."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
