I recently had my carpets, upholstery and counters detailed by Sofloclean.com. I am the captain of an eighty foot, two million dollar private yacht and it is my job to make sure that any company I bring onboard is professional, detailed, and incredibly thorough. SofloClean.com was just that. At the bare minimum I was expecting them to make sure to remove all of the old stains in the carpet and couches and to polish every counter on the yacht. The team well exceeded my expectations. The owner and I had a list of stains to be worked and Bobby found and treated those and many more that most people would brush off as mundane. The team that worked onboard consisted of Bobby and his son, whom together make up the third and fourth generation of the company. They were both outstandingly professional and attentive to our demands and outlandish expectations that are necessary onboard such a luxurious vessel. The company is very family oriented which is appreciated on a family owned private yacht. Bobby had his son working by his side watching, learning and assisting in an exceptionally professional manner for a young man his age. Bobby communicated with us throughout the entire process and did not leave until he was confident that the job was done not only to the owner of the yachts standards, but to that of Bobby’s himself. The multiple couches onboard, of which no two are alike, glowed warmly after being brought back to life from the wear and tear of ten years of salt, sun, and fun. The counters sparkled like new, which radiated light around the smaller dark bathrooms which have little ambient light present. The carpets are a fresh white and welcoming color that the owner hasn’t seen in years. The yacht has been for sale for nearly four years and sold less than a week after Sofloclean.com came onboard. That is certainly no coincidence as the first things you see when walking inside are all things Bobby and his son gave their full effort to. I will definitely be using sofloclean.com again in the future and would recommend anybody else do the same. Another thing I found to be impressive was the fact that I was given a personal cell phone number in case the need for touch ups or corrections came about. This was unnecessary of course as all my needs and then some were met that day. Thank You to Bobby and his son, and thank you to sofloclean.com for the painless and uncomplicated experience of bringing some cleanliness back onboard. The value of the work done and ethic of those doing it is well above what most can offer here in south Florida. Thank you Sofloclean.com. -Sincerely, Captain JimSee more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

Is it worth getting rugs professionally cleaned?

It is worth the money to get rugs professionally cleaned if they’re fragile, have tough-to-remove stains or you don’t know how to clean them. When in doubt, contact a pro to clean your rugs.

How often should you clean your rugs?

This depends on your rug’s condition — and the conditions in your home. If your rug is located in a high-traffic area like a mudroom, entryway or hallway, you may need to clean it more often. Families with small children or pets should clean their rugs more often as well. Those with allergies should also clean their rugs more often, as should those who wear their shoes inside.

What is the best way to clean a Persian rug?

Cleaning a Persian rug often requires utilizing a vacuum, rug shampoo, water, a brush or sponge and bucket. However, be careful of these common DIY mishaps:

  • Using the wrong shampoo or cleaning solution
  • Not using enough water (or using too much)
  • Cleaning your rug too often

To ensure you don’t accidentally ruin your rug, you might want to consider hiring a professional cleaner with plenty of experience and expertise.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.

How much does it cost to clean an area rug?

Whether your pet had an accident, the party got too wild, or your kids can’t control their juice boxes — we all need rug cleaning from time to time. In fact, even if you don’t have a spill or spot, it’s wise to have your area rug cleaned approximately once a year to keep the rug fibers in good health. In general, rug cleaning prices depend on the square footage of the rug, what the rug is made of, whether any repairs are needed, and whether you require the pro to travel to your location or provide pickup and drop-off services. Nationally, average area rug cleaning prices range from $80 to $120.

Wool and silk area rugs typically cost more to clean than rugs made from synthetic fibers because the more delicate materials take more care and may require specialized cleaning fluids. For example, a synthetic rug may cost $1.50 per square foot to clean; a wool, cotton, or chiffon rug could be $2 per square foot; and a silk or Navajo wool rug could cost $3 per square foot. The two most common rug cleaning methods are steam and chemical cleaning. The costs for the two methods are often the same, although a steam-cleaned rug will take longer to dry due to the moisture. If your area rug needs odor removal, moth deterrent, or hand washing, there will be additional charges.
