Chris, Donnie and the crew did a great job. I decided to remodel a home I have owned for 24 years that I will be listing for sale. It was a lot of work which took about 3 weeks to complete. They removed approximately 1200 sq ft of popcorn and add knock down texture in place of the popcorn throughout the house and painted the ceilings. They redrywalled the entire garage and textured the ceiling then painted. Converted a water damaged 8' x 12' sunroom to a covered lanai, painted the exterior of the home and other miscellaneous items. Any issues I had at the end of the project were taken care of immediately. I will invite them to bid my project on my current home when I decide to do it in the near future.

Converted my garage into additional living space. The space included a closed in laundry area, a theatre room, a bedroom and a bathroom en-suite. It is beyond amazing. Everything was completed with professionalism and was always available and punctual. It was a pleasure to work with him and his crew. I have rehired him for other jobs and his workmanship never fails. I have other projects in the works and will most definitely hire Jorge again.

I found Irvin Custom Painting here on Thumbtack. After I made my initial inquiry Irvin was the 1st one to contact me within a few minutes. Irvin came to my house and did a walk around to see what needed to be done and to hear my concerns. What I liked was that he gave us 3 different options of paint quality from good to the best. He and his team came out and had the entire house done in 3 days. They power washed, dug a trench around the homes foundation and put a sealant on before painting. Before the house was starting they even painted a partial piece of the trim to make sure we were happy with our choice. We also had them install a new side garage door, paint our front door, stain the fence and install new LED lights. We couldn't be more happy with Irvin Painting. I will let all my neighbors, friends and family know what a fantastic job they did.

I had Tampa Local Handyman do a variety of work for me including: removing my garage ceiling, adding insulation, replacing the ceiling, and then painting the entire garage. They did a great job and were on budget and on schedule. They also did some work inside the house painting and everything came out very well. Great crew and all very nice to have around. I highly recommend them.

Barbra and her team are doing a great job! After being ripped off by another contractor, Barbara stepped in and made me and my family feel very comfortable, she brought samples for us to look at and even gave her opinion when asked. We are having our garage redone, wood floors, new doors installed, painting, our bathroom remodeled, base boards and our pool rehabbed completely and so far we are very happy with their work!

I had an odd painting project, the inside of a wooden 70 year old garage that had never been painted. There were some particular challenges, and Aleksandr stepped up to handle everything necessary to resolve the issues and complete the job well. He was very careful to protect the elements that were not to be painted, and took the time necessary to deliver a good job. If you have a painting project, I would recommend him. Next Year we plan to repaint our home interior, and I plan to call Aleksandr.

Sheryl's team completed 2 wheelchair ramps in 2 days that were very long and her price was 30% less than the other bidders. They were there early and stayed late to get the job done. It was very nice having a professional Christian company at my house as there was positive conversations with no crude language. I would recommend them to everyone!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
