What tools do you need to repair drywall?

To repair drywall, you need up to several tools and materials. For example, you may need a drill to insert drywall screws and boreholes. A drywall saw or utility knife is perfect for cutting and shaping drywall, and don’t forget your tape measure and pencil. Drywall and taping knives are also essential.

For materials, you’ll likely need construction adhesive, drywall tape, drywall screws, masking tape and joint compound.

If you don’t have these tools — and you don’t want to spend money on them — contact a drywall repair professional instead of doing it yourself.

Who do I hire to install or repair drywall?

A general contractor, handyman or a drywall contractor (or company) can usually install and repair drywall. It’s recommended that you call one of these types of pros when your drywall needs to be repaired, such as after a plumber or electrician has completed their work.

Look up local pros online and compare their profiles, paying extra attention to their ratings, reviews, experience and list of services. Contact three to five pros to get cost estimates for your project.

Do drywall contractors need a license?

Pros may need to obtain a license to fix and install drywall. It’s always worth checking with your local government about whether a drywall company or contractor has to be licensed before they work on your project.

Do drywall contractors do insulation?

A drywall contractor focuses on drywall. If you want to install insulation (or upgrade your existing installation), you should hire an insulation contractor. It's possible that your drywall contractor may be able to offer basic insulation services, but for more advanced insulation installation (such as spray foam), go with a professional who specializes in this.

It's not fair that Thumbtack only lets me select 3 of the 5 criteria for what I liked about working with DJ's Home Repair! Why would such a limitation exist? DJ completely "nailed it" on my project. The quality of his work was impeccable, he showed up when he said he would, he was extremely professional and very responsive to my needs. Lastly, he exceeded my expectations and hiring him was some of the best money I've ever spent. My job wasn't "major", but it was certainly out of my area of expertise. In short, I had had wall sconces removed from my walls and I added recessed lighting to the room. The electrician that did the work did a great job, but he had to cut several holes in the walls and ceiling in order to fish the new wiring. I tried my hand at the repairs and it became evident that I needed help; you can't just put a piece of screen over the hole and try to cover it with spackle. You're just asking for trouble. That's why I engaged DJ DJ showed up the morning of the job at the time he said he would and went over the work with me. I then went upstairs to work from home while he completed the work. A couple hours later he was done. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of the work! He had cut out around the holes in the walls and properly braced new sheetrock in the spaces and completely covered and smoothed the areas. As you can see from the after picture, there is absolutely zero indication that there had been holes in that wall or the opposite facing wall. Additionally, a part of the ceiling that I was a secretly proud of having patched myself had been re-done. It turns out that if you just put a little spackle in the seams of the drywall that was replaced in a hole, you're just asking for trouble because, as DJ educated me, it's eventually going to crack. I love that he did that! He brought his skills and experience to the job and made sure it was done properly. That is so hard to find these days. The last thing I'll mention is "the mess". If you've ever done anything that involves drywall work, you know it's a nightmare. The dust ends up everywhere - even the bottom of your underwear drawer! I hate those projects. When I came downstairs to review the work, there was no dust anywhere! I don't know how he did it, but DJ completely accounted for that aspect of the work and I could not be more appreciative. DJ's a rare find! He's skilled, he's honest, and he takes pride in his work. Rest assured that I now have him on speed-dial and will be engaging him for future projects.
