The experience with my tutors have been amazing. They always made sure I thoroughly understood the material before moving on. They also showed genuine compassion for how the students were doing, both during the tutoring and after testing.

I am so pleased with my decision to hire Andres as my college statistics tutor. Andres is kind, patient, and a incredibly talented tutor. I have been out of school for quite awhile; upon beginning my statistics course I felt incredibly lost and unable to complete the work. Andres was able to explain each and every concept I was struggling with in a way that I actually understood. After working with Andres I am fully confident that I will not only pass this class but I will excel. THANK YOU ANDRES!

I can't say enough about Bridge Tutoring. Audrey was amazing for my son. She was so professional and accommodating. His scores for the SAT was up considerably. She was also available at the last minute when he had a surprise test the next day. I would not hesitate to tell everybody how wonderful she was. I have tried other tutors in the past, but none of them compares to her. She is a 10!!!

Melinda was the ideal tutor for my youngest sister. She helped her improve her math and reading skills in time for the 3rd grade FSA. She prepared Abigail with effective practice and provided tools that my sister could use out of tutoring. Melinda is punctual and professional. She is also great with children, as my sister was highly responsive to her and very comfortable. I plan to use her services again.

We hired Sami about 2 months ago to help our 9 year old boy with his math. He was way behind his grade level and we have had many other tutors work with him to no avail. Sami was hired by my wife and he has been a breath of fresh air. Our son has shown a lot of progress but the main thing is he is starting to really understand what he is learning. He is more confident and it shows in his school work. I think it is important before hiring someone to really read the reviews and my review is he is excellent at what he does

Dr. Dubler is a skilled tutor that knows that taking the SAT is similar to activities like sports, dance and theater; there are many factors that influence someone’s performance. Dr. Dubler not only shares his passion for setting students up for PSAT and SAT test taking; but he provides applicable hints for students to think about in advance, such as: what to eat the week before the test, and many other tricks to the trade of successful test taking. He will arrive promptly and professionally and will assign homework in between his sessions and encourages his students to do what they can do, with the reality they have their normal extracurricular activities and homework to attend to. His longevity in this field speaks for his abilities to be committed to his passion for SAT tutoring. Dr. Dubler is very experienced and highly educated. He is an excellent match for students who do not mind being asked to explain their train of thought, as his expectation is a high level of interaction. This is one way he reinforces what he is teaching. He is also full on fun magic tricks along the way, which will certainly keep things as he likes them “entertaining.”

From the very beginning, John was very professional and had a sincere concern for what I needed. He was genuine, and very much involved during the tutoring sessions. Considering my lack of understanding of the material simply because I hate physics; he however, took his time to make it very informal enough to keep me engaged. I expressed my concerns & he was on it and was very eager to make sure I understood the materials. Throughout the sessions, he could see where I was checking out mentally but he continued to encourage me along the way & even found a few ways to make me laugh so that I could refocus. I would recommend John to anyone who is in need of a tutor who is patient and actually cares about the client understanding and passing physics. You will get more than what you paid for. He seems very down to earth so far. He has a pure desire to help succeed. I am actually beginning to understand a lot more than I knew before and that is all a great big thanks to Mr. John Way. Thanks John!

Melinda has been my writing tutor for two years now after jumping around from tutor to tutor my entire eight years in college. Melinda has made me a better writer in all aspects. I am a history major, and am constantly writing research papers. Knowing I have Melinda to guide me and help edit, drastically decreases my anxiety when writing. She is exceptional at making herself available when the going gets extra tough. Overall Melinda is the best writing tutor I've ever had.

If you are shopping around, just stop and call these guys right now. I've been very bad at math my entire life. I flunked algebra three times before I called Arbor Tutors. The tutor was very understanding and nonjudgmental. You cannot go wrong with this company.

Mrs Wright-Pennant helped me with both College Algebra and Trigonometry. She was quite knowledgable and explained the material so that I could understand it. She was very professional and didn't get impatient if I wasn't grasping the material fast enough. I would recommend her to anyone who is having difficulty with math.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

    What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

    • English
    • Science understanding and reasoning
    • Math
    • Reading
    • Writing essay (optional)

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.
