Professor Iveth Pavon helped me prepare to take the CLEP exam and test out of Spanish class at my University. I had some prior knowledge in Spanish but she was a huge help and clarified things such as the forms of past tense, future tense and present tense. She also helped me increase my vocabulary amongst other things. Excellent professor for high and low level Spanish lessons, I highly recommend her to anyone looking to learn the language or increase what they already know. I know I certainly did. Also I passed the CLEP :) I don't think I would have without her lessons.

I was looking for someone close by that would be willing to teach Spanish lessons in a face-to-face setting. Jeannette provides me with Spanish lessons 3 times a week at my house. She is punctual and organized. Jeannette will assign homework if you want and is helpful at clarifying any questions you may have. I have recommended Jeanette to several people I know personally and would recommend her to anyone here on this site. I know she also does lessons online if you're so inclined.

I really got the competence I needed when I took Spanish classes with Maria to the point of having passed the Advanced Level Exam in Spanish Language and Culture. Maria always communicated and explained the material clearly, and maintained an open line of communication with her students. The topics, class work and exams were made and divided appropriately. I liked the demonstrations / examples from the class to help remember the material. It was a good reward for working hard throughout the semester. In general, Maria is knowledgeable, very accessible and made the class pleasant. I highly recommend Maria Aparicio to those who are looking to take Spanish courses at all language levels.

For two years now I have been learning Spanish with Carolina Tabrizi and I can attest that she is a superb teacher. My progress has been phenomenal to the point that I can easily converse on all sort of subjects - except philosophy and math !!! Her method is boredom proof. She has a vast culture and experience and can neatly weave interesting subjects into the conversation part of the class. She even makes grammar fun ! The homework she rightly insists on is always a bit challenging, just enough to keep one interested and eager to learn more. Carolina's personality is engaging. She is calm, attentive, she has a sense of humor. She is very encouraging and genuinely cheers at her student's progress. It is a privilege to be Carolina's student and I hope she will agree to teach me until I am proficient enough to easily talk in Spanish about philosophy and math ! Francoise R Wellington, FL

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
