Mr. Kessler educated me on the positive approach to training my puppy. His knowledge of Behavioral therapies and psychology was very informative. At the same time, he had my wild Boston Terrier puppy sitting within the first 20 minute!. I was amazed! He also gave me homework to work on with my pup. Mr Kessler also followed-up to see how I was doing with my training. He was awesome!

We had an amazing experience working with Michele. She is very experienced, professional, and showed up on time. She expresses clear knowledge of training dogs. Her method of training is to not only instill appropriate behavior in a dog, but to ensure that the dog's owners understand the training process and are able to follow through so they can continue to work with the dog without a trainer present. Michele helped our dog, Lulah, work on her growling and barking at houseguests. We highly recommend Michele/Awesome n Pawsome to ever pet owner!

WE Took our Yorkie Puppy to Ron and Melissa when he was 8 weeks old - they took him from our hands and kept him in their home for 18 days. We were really not sure what to expect. We had never had a dog trained before. Ron explained to us that dog training is misunderstood to never use food as a bribe - I was very skeptical but Ron came highly recommended bu a friend who was going to put their dog down until they met Ron so I was willing to give it a shot. His prices were reasonable considering the dog stayed in his home and not a kennel and all followup lessons are included. When we got our puppy back we were shocked!!! Not only did he listen - HE WAS HAPPY!!! We are ever so thankful to them and recommend ANYONE GETTING A PUP TO LOOK UP AZTEC DOG TRAINING AND PUPPY BOOTCAMP - It will be the best investment you will ever make...Thanks again Ron and Melissa

Finally a trainer that knows what he’s doing!!!! I have been to petco training and even hired 3 other trainers to help with my dogs and have had horrible results even having to take my dog to emergency vet with hives because the other trainer stressed him out so bad. Right away I knew this guy was different. He took control and knew what he was seeing. My dogs have responded great and now listen and behave on command without being bribed with treats. I am sooo impressed!!! He is very flexible around your schedule and I wouldn’t recommend any other trainer. This guy knows what he’s doing!

Fido's Gym is the BEST and most FUN place for dogs EVER! I literally can't even say the word "gym" anymore around my Boxer Fiona because she starts whining and crying. She absolutely LOVES going to Fido's. Fiona is a white Boxer and she is very active as she's only 1 year old. Since she is white, she cannot be in the sun for more than a few minutes before getting sunburned. Fido's Gym was such a blessing for our family. Not only is the facility indoors and really large (for her to run around in) but it's super clean and there's tons of fun toys (and friends) for her to play with. I've noticed a significant change in her behavior (for the better) since bringing her to Fido's Gym and letting her socialize with other dogs as well as burn some over her Boxer energy off. Heather the owner of Fido's Gym is SO friendly and she's great with placing other dogs with the same temperament as your dog. She's an amazing dog trainer as well as a dog lover and you can tell right away when you meet her. I've met so many nice people (and pups) at Fido's and Fiona and I really look forward to going there each week. If your looking for a fun place to bring your dog, I would highly recommend Fido's Gym.

Rudy has had our 2nd Gen. German Shepherd puppy and has taken a very head strong dog thru basic training and I can not say enough good things about his program and procedures to bring this dog into what we wanted him to be. Now we are going to let him go thru the protection and aggression part of his program. I can't say more about this trainer but to tell you if you want your dog trained right talk to Rudy. Without any abuse to a head strong dog he is the man for you. I plan on getting another Shepherd and no one would I consider other than him. I could not be more pleased or satisfied with his program working with my dog and my wife Debbie's baby.

Brandy is patient with my labs. They are older dogs who were in serious need of training. I had thought all hope was lost but not so! They are following directions, playing well together and I can open my door without a scene. This happened with simple commands and patience. Brandy had to teach US how to be dog parents and lead our dogs. Still a work in progress but we can see positive results. Thank you!!!!!

I focus on a variety of services. My philosophy is that no dog is untrainable. From potty training to loose-leash walking to behavior issues, you name it, and we can work through it. All I ask from the owner is dedication and willingness to learn. I'll bring you the tools to success; however, it is up to you to use them. No breed is left behind with me. All breeds are welcome. I also have experience with rescued dogs who may have confidence issues. I am an animal lover turned professional dog trainer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
