Ivette is an excellent tutor and has tailored lessons to my interests and ability level. I'm an adult who started with a basic but fairly rudimentary Spanish knowledge, and she has helped me increase my proficiency to almost entire hour-long conversations in Spanish! She is helpful, encouraging, and fun/easy to talk to. She is also extremely professional and communicative - always on time and very responsive to texts and emails. She has provided me with additional multi-media study materials - recommendations for videos, podcasts, and articles as well as conversational tools and grammar worksheets. I would highly recommend Ivette as a tutor!!

I was looking for someone close by that would be willing to teach Spanish lessons in a face-to-face setting. Jeannette provides me with Spanish lessons 3 times a week at my house. She is punctual and organized. Jeannette will assign homework if you want and is helpful at clarifying any questions you may have. I have recommended Jeanette to several people I know personally and would recommend her to anyone here on this site. I know she also does lessons online if you're so inclined.

I am very pleased with Maria's style of teaching and her fun personality has made learning a more easeful experience. She's created a solid foundation from which I have gained a better understanding of the spanish language and her homework assignments have helped me tremendously. I have learned a great deal in just three or four lessons. I want very much to become fluent in spanish for personal and professional reasons and believe I can achieve that goal with Maria's tutelage. I highly recommend her service! Shelley

Carolina is extremely professional; always on time and ready to work! She is very creative in her teaching technique, as she incorporates a variety of different methods of instruction (i.e. listening drills, one-on-one conversation, writing skills, etc.). Personally I always had a difficult time with classroom language instruction (such as in high school or college). Carolina custom tailors her teaching and coursework to the individual needs and skill levels of her students. For example, she would always focus on topics and terminology specific to my job. Classes are valuable as well as enjoyable. I would recommend Carolina for students of all Spanish skill levels, whether they wish to learn the language as students, professionals, or even recreational travelers.

I took Doctor Aparicio's 10 hour online course to help with my Spanish at work. I have to say she is an authentic teacher!!! I have never taken a course on line with a professor attending me a full hour and I have to say I learned more than I thought possible. I like that she customised all the lessons for me, according to my needs, and she made me work hard. She is very inspirational, fun, and a sweet and demanding professional. She teaches you not only to be fluent when speaking but also to learn about the culture in Latin America and Spain. She is very knowledgeable about art, history, linguistics, literature.... She is one of a kind. There are not may profs like her left. I put in practice what I learned with her since day 1 and I am thinking of hiring her to improve my Spanish. I want it for travelling and be able to communicate in Spanish at a higher lever.

I really have enjoyed my sessions with my French teacher. I like the fact that her original language is French. Classes are fun and she will concentrate around what you prefer or like. Extremely friendly and punctual and flexible makes her a standout. Also can teach groups. I'm impressed and you should be too.

Patricia is a gifted teacher with a tremendous knowledge of language and language learning. After working together one on one for only 18 months, I can have a normal conversation with a native French speaker. That amazes me! In addition, Patricia is a lovely, kind person who knows how to make full use of your time and motivate you to do your best. She is upbeat and positive and always makes learning fun. Should you choose to work with Patricia, it will be one of the best things you have ever done for yourself.

I have taken both traditional language classes and listening. Learned courses that I came out of being able only to speak or understand a few words, Professor Jenny Vela starts with the basics and builds on them as you would with a child first learning to speak. With her building block approach you gain the confidence and vocabulary to express your own thoughts as well as to understand others speaking to you with increased complexity. The more you chat about what you do on a typical day or what you did last weekend or what you like to do, you find you're enjoying yourself so much that you forget you're learning Spanish.

It is an official language in more than 50 countries, and it is spoken extensively in countries where it has no official status. It is also one of the official languages of some of the world’s international organizations, such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations and the European Union. The English language plays a major part in the political, economic and cultural life of many countries, making it important for many people for various purposes either for work, education, travel or for leisure. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
