Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

The movers were on time and completed a very fair job. However the movers were a tad rough with our furniture moving. After theyvleft i noticed a large scratch on my stairwell landing that was not there before. I guess that is a small price to pay for quick affordable movers.

I've moved a lot but this was my best move ever. Wallie , Dmitrii, and Oleg were fantastic. First, they were very professional and knew how to do their jobs very well. They were smart and efficient with getting the job done. But on top of that they were friendly and fun to be around. Dmitrii was so talkative that we became best friends. Just kidding, he was very quiet. All three guys were just great movers and and they were a pleasure to be around even though they were moving a bunch of stuff down three flights of stairs. I recommend them highly. Great job!

Was disappointed with their punctuality especially. Was told the movers would arrive at 6-7am to complete the 4 hour trek to our new location. My girlfriend and I both woke up at 5:30 am to tie up remaining things to make it easier on the movers to expedite the process. I later received a call that the movers would be late, around 8:30 am. I was annoyed, but what could I do? They eventually made their way to our apartment around 11am, loading up the truck by about 12:30pm for a small already packed 1 BR apartment. My girlfriend and I were scheduled to be at our new place before 5pm to sign our lease. This obviously stressed us out, we had planned to be on the road around 8-9am based off the original arrival estimate. Instead we were getting on the highway around 12:45pm, having to rush to make it to the leasing office before close (4 hour drive....). The movers luckily made it to our apartment roughly 45 mins after us, so we didn't have to wait too long to move our things in. But, after getting the majority of our things in they saved the couch for last, and I could tell they must have been exhausted, due to the humidity/heat that evening. They claimed the couch we had wouldn't fit in the apartment elevator, which was accurate, but they then claimed our couch, which is not large at all, would not be able to get upstairs. So they left it in the common lobby and I had to call a junk removal company and pay out of pocket to get rid of a staple piece of furniture. All because they didn't want to attempt to move the couch they decided to save for last, once they were gassed. All in all, my things were delivered intact, but the initial punctuality issues were extremely frustrating, and the fact they didn't even give a real effort to get our couch in was obvious. I've moved that couch through several homes over the past 4 years, never ran into an issue with fitting it through any door frames or stair wells in that time. If my girlfriend wasn't 5ft tall and 100lbs we would have just done it ourselves, but that was why we hired a moving company in the first place.

Arrived 2 hours late, went over the estimated time even though we moved all the boxes ourselves and only left the furniture, and they scratched my brand new wood floors in several locations.

Overall Brer is a nice guy but unfortunately I can’t give Brer a 5 star rating because my moving experience was aweful. Brer wasn’t as professional as he should have been with my move. He was 3 hours late for his start time. He was scheduled for 9am but arrived at 12pm. I had to call him a few times just confirm when he would arrive. I explained to Brer that if it wasn’t for the fact that I needed to move that day I would have canceled the job. The first hour of the move was ok but things took a bad turn when he and his moving partner did not properly secure my sofa bed, as result they practically dropped and damaged my sofa bed the legs to sofa was cracked and broken and fabric was torn and blood stained Brer injured his hand while moving my sofa which the reason they was blood on my sofa. My daughter and I provided first aid to his hand. I felt bad and offered them a lunch break. They did continue to work and finished moving my furniture but they cut corners with reassembling my furniture in my new apartment I had to ask them to put the middle piece of my dining table back and place and the mattress under my trundle bed. The bed wasn’t put back together properly because a few wood pieces were left in my room and dresser draws which I had to lodge out because the pieces of wood got stuck in the dressers during transport. Brer didn’t offer a discount or to pay for the damage to my sofa. He did his best to put sofa in place where the damage isn’t as noticeable. The best thing he should have done was apologize and discounted the rate per hour or gave me an hour free of service but he never offered. I understand he needed to earn as much as he can on this job since he had a partner he had to pay and couldn’t take on the other jobs he had scheduled that day because he had to finish this job. If Brer had arrived on time with a reliable parter he wouldn’t have to rush with my move which could have prevented the damage he and his partner did to my furniture and hurting him. I really felt bad about Brer hurting himself but I can’t recommend him for moving jobs. Brer seems like a great guy and he probably do very well in other jobs like tv installation as he mentioned to me but unfortunately I won’t know because I guess I hired him on a bad day.

My roommate and I both used them. They were super professional and work very diligently to move me into my new home. Not to mention, they are super easy on the eyes! Very happy that I had affordable and professional service from them.

The 2 guys (Sergey & Andrey) that came for the move were incredibly polite, helpful and arrived on time. Packed everything securely. The only problem I had with them was that although I told them I had a glass table, mirror on my dresser and each TV, they didn't inform me that it would be a separate charge. They surprised me the day of the move, so I decided to handle those items myself. Had they advised me on our phone conversation I wouldn't have a problem. I don't like surprises after the fact. Would I recommend them ABSOLUTELY, just ask those questions!!!

Alex was nice. (The following is only MY personal preference...) I had a small issue with the language barrier with the second mover and had to run to Alex every time. Had some boxes get put on the truck that were supposed to stay behind...... but at least he was also nice even if he couldn't understand me. The job was bigger than originally thought and they adapted best way. At the end, I felt extremely horrible about making them rush a lot to put the stuff in storage since Storage America closes too early. I was afraid they would get stuck in the facility. I'll probably be using them on my out of state move if they have time.

If I could give zero stars I would. I admit that the movers worked hard; however, they arrived without furniture pads. As a result I have several pieces of scratched and damaged furniture. The move took 8 hours; however, video was sent to Christian beforehand of all the items needing to move. I also sent another video with items I needed to add. At the tail end of the day they wanted to leave all of my boxes and some smaller pieces of furniture outside. I had to insist that the majority be loved brought into the house. The job was sloppy and it may have been because Christian had a party that night. His 2 employees basically stopped working towards the end and could not stop griping about the work. I fed them lunch and dinner at my expense AMD tipped them each $50. I sent a message to Christian regarding the damaged furniture on Sunday and have yet to hear back (it’s Tuesday). I don’t think he will reply and if he does he will mention that my NEW furniture was already damaged. A little more respect and professionalism would have gone a long way at. I will not be using them again.

I originally left a five star review after the guys came, packed, and left so effectively however upon reaching my destination and starting the process of unpacking my POD I had to redo this review. Let me start off by saying that Apika responded quickly and they were able to accommodate a change on date with little to no issue. I was called with an estimated arrival time that was actually accurate! Upon arrival I walked through what i needed moved and packed and they immediately started working. This was the reason they originally recieved five starts. I was sent two men however I was only able to communicate effectively with one. One of the guys did not speak English, nor Spanish and without google translate would have been a complete disaster. His own counter part had difficulty communicating and because of his lack of understanding he kept on bringing down and wrapping up the wrong items from my second floor (this of course after I went upstairs and specifically pointed at what i needed done, he still did not understand). I was sent two guys for I believe 2 hours and i ended up using 3 - 4 hours. Only one worked effectively the other was a complete waste of time. Upon arriving at my destination and starting to unload my POD. I notice that these men put ALL of the boxes that i labelled fragile and specifically told them to pack last, on the bottom of the stack. Because these boxes contained my entire China cabinet, along with other glass kitchen appliances and decorative items they of course shattered under the weight of all the other boxes that were placed on top. Naturally, I am livid and have to replaced hundreds of dollars worth of kitchen things.
