Ron and his guys have done wood floor installation and tile work for me on two occasions. They do the work when they say they will do it and the results have been great. As with any project, they hit an occasional snag, but worked through it to stay within a reasonable time-frame and budget. I would recommend them to anyone looking for this type of work.

I had a bathroom project that was bid by J & E Quality Installations. (Full walls and ceiling of walk-in shower with 2 decorative bands, walls up to chair rail height with decorative border of toilet and vanity areas, and full floors of shower/toilet, vanity, and large walk-in closet spaces, somewhere between 400-500 sqft total.) Juanita was the contact person who coordinated the appointment time for estimate and did keep in touch via text messages throughout the process. She also made a spot check appearance halfway through the process. She couldn't have been more pleasant to interact with. But the real artisan is Emmanuel! He is who came out and measured for the estimate and he laid the tile himself (marble throughout with glass tile inserts on floor design and wall border pattern, glass/stone/stainless accented bands x2 in shower space.) I knew within the first 5 minutes of meeting him that he was my choice. His extremely professional demeanor from the onset and attitude throughout the process was exemplary. Always making eye contact, always respectful, and pleasant from his smile and consistently upbeat attitude to the tunes on his Pandora choices while he worked! And, let's talk about his work.....it is obvious that Emmanuel has set a very high standard of work ethic for himself. He is very meticulous and I especially appreciated his flexibility when I wanted to change small parts of the design, even if it meant he had to redo a small section of tile previously placed. He was also extremely helpful in giving recommendations/options about tile placement when it came to tricky areas He was early or exactly on time each day (never late). He estimated 7-10 days for the project, was done on day 7. Cleaned up after and even helped me separate the cardboard boxes for recycle AND TOOK IT ALL OUT TO THE CURB FOR ME! I wish this website let me insert pictures. The bathroom came out amazing! To say the least, I was impressed with not only his craftsmanship, but with him as a person. Emmanuel is a very decent, hardworking man who obviously takes pride in what he does and at every turn his goal seemed to be to make sure I was happy with the progress to the end. I certainly would recommend him (and J & E Quality Installations) without reservation.

I knew the minute that Jonathan came to my home to provide a quote that he was the contractor that I would choose. Sometimes you have a "gut" feeling! Well I did. And I was right on! He is a "Consummate Professional". Every other contractor that came out was only interested in "forming and pouring" concrete. Jonathan was more interested in providing the right solution for my very irregular terrain. He broke out a laser and ensured that he would be able to provide me the product I wanted for the price he quoted. In the end that is exactly what he did. In fact I had him do several other projects and I will have him back for another very large pole barn that I will be building in the very near future. I have had many, many contractors at my home in the last 6 months and NONE this good. If you are looking for any kind of concrete, paver tractor work, grading, block work, bulk head design and installation, stone or brick work, fire pits, landscape and garden additions, decks – look no further!!! Use Jonathan and TerraPros!! 2/10/2015 This is for the succeeding job that TerraPros did. TerraPro is amazing. I hired them previously and had them back to do extensive work on my very long driveway. Jonathan and TerraPros also did a large patio with crushed granite terrace, crushed granite walkways, a fire pit, sod, grading and some extensive landscaping. He is a consummate professional that knows his stuff. His concrete work is magnificent. I had a very large area that was multi-level and had tree roots that had to be maintained. Jonathan used a laser level and made sure that once the concrete was poured I would never have any issues with water drainage. No water ever comes near the house - even in the most severe rains the water sheds exactly as he had designed it. His landscaping design work matches what we were looking for on our property to a tee. I have several more very large jobs including a bulk head and a pole barn and Jonathan with TerraPros is my Go To man and company. His work ethic is beyond reproach. I will never use anyone else. If you are looking for a contractor for masonry, landscaping, carpentry you really should look no further.

I am a General Contractor with over 30!years of experience. I hired Hartley's Floor Covering to complete a 500 square feet of tile removal, floor leveling, and install new 12"x24" floor tile. They provided an exceptional level of quality, at a very competitive price. They did whatever was necessary to correct many problems with the floor leveling and cracks even to point of purchasing expensive grinding tools at their own expense. They were very consciencious about the quality of the work ensuring that the floor was level, joints were straight and flat. I expect to use them on my own home as well as on all my future work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
