Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken door?

Doors have several moving parts and take a lot of wear and tear, so they can break in multiple ways. One of the most common types of breakage is broken hinges. Fixing this problem may involve using a chisel, glue and other specialty tools.

For any repairs you don’t feel comfortable doing yourself, hire a professional. A door repair service, contractor, carpenter or handyman may be able to fix your door issues.

Can you fix a door that's been kicked in?

A door that has been kicked in can usually be repaired, but this type of repair is generally more expensive than standard repairs. The extent of damage is the largest driver of cost. The pro may need to replace the entire door, repaint or stain it, fix damaged locks and hardware, or even replace it entirely.

Consult with a door repair professional near you to find out if your door can be fixed or if it should be replaced.

I needed a door handle repaired and a new lock on my sliding glass door. I was quoted a price of $14.00 for the service call and $34.00 for parts and labor. I very clearly described what I needed fixed and I provided pictures but when the repair man showed up, he wanted to charge me over $300.00. I desperately needed a new lock and I will say that the work performed was done well, he completed the repair the same day I requested it, and the lock is great. However, the retail cost of the lock was only a $40.00 and he marked it up to $250.00. He also charged me $80.00 to repair the handle but all that he did was reattach the handle, he did not repair it. All considered, it was pretty good that he came out the same day and that I did not have to do anything. I am only rating 2 stars because I felt he intentionally quoted me a low price early in the day knowing he would charge me WAY more when he showed up. There is no good reason the lock should have been marked up 525% and also no good reason it should cost $80.00 to simply reattach a broken handle. However, I agreed to the price because I was in a bind and did not have time to do it myself or contact another repair man so late in the day. Without the new lock, my house would have been insecure and I can not have that with my wife and kid at home. I felt taken advantage of because he knew I needed it done that day and that it was too late in the day to call someone else. If you hire this company just make sure they quote you what they actually intend to charge you!!
