Healing With Mo

I have been seeing Mo for deep energy work/ Reiki since early 2016. I happened to cross paths with Mo, and after speaking to her about her practice, I decided to make an appointment with her. This was during a time in my life where I became open to looking inward. I had long prided myself on self-sufficiency and logic, so the idea of working on my metaphysical side was a big step... it turned out to be a big step in the right direction. Mo was very helpful and walked me through the process of what she was doing and what to expect. I found the sessions with Mo to be so relaxing and restoring. Mo herself is simply a joy... she gets a kick out of life that I usually only see in young children. So, not only are the sessions intensely relaxing and restorative, but Mo's intuition leads her to work on exactly what I need during each appointment. It always baffles me how much she can know about my emotional and spiritual states when I don't tell her any of it beforehand. She has helped me with grounding, bad patterns in relationships, self-doubt, sciatica and some other physical ails, fear of abandonment, finding my intuition and listening to it, connection with the divine, healing childhood issues and countless other things. When I heard Mo was moving to Saint Augustine, FL I was selfishly sad; she had become such an integral part of my self-care. When she suggested distance sessions, I knew I would try them, but I wasn't sure they'd be as helpful as the deep work I was used to face-to-face. Thankfully, I was very wrong. I get just as much out of Mo's distance sessions as the ones in her local practice. Setting up a place in my house for the work has been fun, and I speak to Mo on the phone before and after each session. They are just as relaxing as before, still just as helpful and she is just as intuitive with distance work. I'm thrilled I can continue reaping the benefits of deep session work even though she is several states away. These benefits make me a calmer, happier, more serene, more able to accept "life on life's terms" human being. Talia Goldman

I have experienced a number of massage therapists in Jacksonville, and Joyce is my all time favorite. She is extremely intuitive and thorough. My favorite is deep tissue. After each session, I personally feel healed both physically and emotionally. She finds the spots intuitively, that I didn't even know I needed work on, and those end up being the most impactful. I am so grateful that I know Joyce and feel enormous gratitude for the massages she gives me. Thank you Joyce!

JD is a world-class massage therapist. I've been seeing him for years. He figures out the root cause of tightness, posture problems, and pain (not always intuitive) and solves the problem. He's one of the two massage therapists of the many I've used over several decades of regular massage who is able to do that.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Reiki and how does it work?

Reiki is a type of wellness bodywork, often referred to as energy work, that originated in Japan. Reiki practitioners offer this traditional healing technique with the intent of manipulating the flow of energy through the client’s body. Unlike massage, Reiki uses minimal — if any — pressure, focusing on stimulating energy flow rather than working the soft tissue and muscles. This movement of energy is done to improve mental, emotional and physical health. Reiki is touted for its stress relief and ability to ease tension. It can also improve mental clarity, release stress and tension, manage pain, or help with spiritual growth. It is said that Reiki practitioners act as a channel for a universal life force to help support a client’s natural ability to heal. Reiki sessions often last 30 to 90 minutes, with prices varying based on session length, background and experience of the provider, and where you live. Nationally, the average price range for a Reiki session is $60-$80.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

Where does Reiki energy come from?

Reiki is a form of bodywork that involves the “laying on of hands” to heal. In Reiki, a client lies down, clothed, and allows the energy worker to pass their hands slowly over their body, sometimes physically touching the body and sometimes hovering above it, to help create healing movement in their energy. This movement of energy is said to help the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

According to the International Association of Reiki Professionals, the practice of Reiki was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. The doctor sought to create a healing practice that wasn’t attached to any religion or religious belief so that all people could use it. The healing power of Reiki is said to come from a universal life force, and the Reiki practitioner is like a channel or conduit for the healing energy that is present in all living organisms. The Reiki practitioner can sense energy blockages and help restore flow, which in turn can help create emotional, physical, spiritual or mental wellness.

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.
