Melinda worked with our daughter for two years. At the time our daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and she was struggling at school. Melinda was able to bring the best in her. Melinda taught her organizational skills, comprehension and memorization techniques and critical thinking. She helped our daughter in English, Social Sciences, Public speaking and writing. Our daughter went from a C student to an A student. Melinda gave her the boost and self confidence she needed to start high school. We will always be grateful to Melinda. Highly recommended.

Paul interviewed my father today. Both my father and I found it interesting and enjoyable, and I learned quite a bit about my father's WWII experiences that I did not know.

I can't speak highly enough about Regina Edmonds and her work. I am a writer and she created a website for me to promote my second novel. She offered a price that required me to work with her, but I would have wanted to, anyway, because I was particular about the pictures I wanted for the mock-up cover of the book (not yet published). Yes, she made the cover, and it looks great. She advised me on what was needed to get search engine optimization for attracting people to the site. And people are visiting it every day, with many registering to read the free first chapter (she also recommended that). I work at odd hours, and we communicated weekends, including a holiday weekend, and well into the evening. When I had problems working with Wordpress, she readily came to my rescue. She worked as fast as I could supply her with the information for the site. I am very happy that Thumbtack forwarded her name to me. I chose her because of the insights on Web designing and the most productive ways to use a website that she revealed in the essay on her own website. Again, I give her the very top rating.

Hi, I've worked as a private tutor, a teaching assistant at a local private school, and served as a college instructor for 13 years. I have Bachelor's and Master’s degree in Communication. I've taught Public Speaking in state and private colleges across South Florida. I've enjoyed working with each person I've met to build their confidence in speaking and written communication skills. I have also taught Communication Studies, English Composition, Research and Report Writing, and Business Communication. My teaching style is open, responsive, and engaged. If you're looking for refined, creative, informative writing that respects your deadlines, then I am the perfect writer for you. I have been a professional writer for 10 years, mostly as a journalist for major newspapers in Florida, but I have also been a copy editor for articles on the web and in print, and books. I have done several successful marketing projects, including writing for SEO. My experience as a journalist trained me to write accurate, descriptive, concise articles on deadline. It also gave me impeccable research skills as I often had to become an instant expert in subjects I was unfamiliar with. I was a creative writing major at Florida State so I am versatile enough to handle any project. I can inject personality when appropriate or I can be simply straightforward. It's always been important to me to do a great job, so I welcome your changes and suggestions. I look forward to taking on your projects!

I have six published books, plus 3 ghost written books, and 33 articles. Recently I finished the first book of a trilogy.

Hello! I am a freelance writer with a university education and a passion for writing. I create engaging, well-researched and easy-to-read writing. I do articles, blog posts, resumes and reviews. Custom projects are also welcome.

To whom it may concern, My name is Meredith Hamilton, MPH. My educational background is in medicine and public health. My professional experience and abiding interests lie in the non-profit arena. I have experience as well as personal strengths and aptitudes that, I believe, will provide great benefit to you. I am a dedicated hard worker who offers both leadership and organizational skills. I have successfully managed teams of individuals in the non-profit setting; have written and won grant applications; and have successfully fulfilled demanding schedules of grant reporting. I have administered and cut budgets, and I am acutely aware of the need to align organizational goals with fiscal resources. In my personal life, I have faced and overcome a number of challenges that have enhanced my empathy for all who have faced adversities. Indeed, I believe each of us suffers our own hardships in life. I have found that this has greatly increased my individual strength and engendered a need to aid others, while encouraging their own personal achievements. I most enjoy working with others, whether staff or those seeking help from the social service organization for which I work. Interpersonal interactions drive my best performance; push me to maximize my capabilities; and make my life and livelihood the most rewarding. After obtaining my masters degree in public health, I held a senior management position at a non-profit organization. I found an agency that, though venerable, had no structured data collection processes, statistical analyses, nor any means for data storage! By the time I left, I had successfully instituted new data collection tools and policies. Additionally, I instituted procedures that empowered the staff, through personal and group training, which ensured the facility's continued existence. In fact, these measures rescued several grants that had previously been in peril, including two vital and lucrative federal grants. I recently relocated to the treasure coast to be closer to my aging parents. I am a volunteer ombudsman here. I assess long-term care and rehabilitation facilities plus nursing homes yearly. I also investigate reported complaints, including cases of elder abuse and neglect. I am anxious to restart my career in public health here in Florida and would cherish an opportunity to meet with you and discuss what I can offer to you and your excellent program. Very truly yours, Meredith T. Hamilton, MPH

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
