Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Ray did an EXCELLENT job cleaning up the tiles on my balcony. The tile installer I previously hired did not properly grout the tiles, which left the grout cracked and left a film on top of the tiles that always made it look dirty. Ray offered to regrout the tiles, clean then up, seal the grout, and fix a drainage issue I had for an extremely fair price. You can see how drastic of a change there is before and after his work in the pics (2 are before, last one is after)! If you’re looking for someone to clean your tiles, look no further. You’ll be impressed with Ray’s work.

The work that he did do was good. He even suggested a better edging that he said he would come back and install (which he eventually did after several attempts to get him out to do it). He cut a tile wrong and said he would come fix it but after many attempts, in which, he no showed for an appointment and having to reach out to him instead of him telling me he wasn’t coming the tile is still not fixed. Now with a hurricane approaching the finishing of the job was put on his back burner and I was even asked if fixing my tile was a “priority” for me at the moment. (After I had to, once again, ask him if he was going to keep the appointment, which he hadn’t intended to.) Not the best way to handle your customers.

If I could give a thousand stars, I would. He was very patient and honest with my many questions about choosing the right tiles. He was also very good about communicating when he would be there and how it was going. The job he did is perfect. Thank you so much!

Lukaz and his team were AWESOME with our tile project. Had a big issue when I demo'd the wood flooring that a big part of the living/dining room was not on the same level as the rest of our home. He discussed our options and we went with what was best. It turned out great!!! Definitely works hard to ensure we were happy with our flooring. GREAT JOB!!

I had my tile floor cleaned and sealed by James. He responded promptly to every communication prior to the service, arrived early, and did the job efficiently and thoroughly. When faced with a possible issue - another contractor needing access to the space while James was working on it - he came up with a solution instead of making it a major issue. I was very happy with James' service, price, and performance and would recommend him to anyone needing his services.

Folks, if you’re looking for a tile installer, look no further!!! Lucas and his team are fantastic; from the very beginning I felt very comfortable with them and knew they would deliver an excellent product. My floors look like mirrors; the transitions are seamless and the spacing perfect. The workmanship is so nice that I’m hoping he will be able to do a couple more jobs for me. My home is my castle and they’re making it look like such! So grateful!!!

Corey cleaned and sealed our roughly 400 sq ft of tile which looked dull and dirty. He was friendly and informative abt what to expect. The job took about 1 1/2 hrs, abt an hour longer than predicted, but the results were great. The price was reasonable and the service was good. The promised follow-up call never happened, but there were no issues so it really didn't matter. We would use Carpet Genie again.

Raphael the owner of golden floors is extremely conscientious fastidious and very detailed and his work. Raphael laid out the floors in two different patterns and since I'm remote sent me photos asked me which one I prefer and gave me his recommendations which we both agreed was the best installation application for my condo. Raphael is very cooperative does his work and doesn't bother me about details or change orders. We have a contract and we both have followed it to the letter both without argument or conflict and I would highly recommend golden floors to anyone looking for exceptional tile installations.
