If you are looking for a caterer for any reason, stop your search here. Chef Brian is the greatest to work with! Dade County Food Group catered my 100 person wedding.... And HAMD MADE GNOCCHI for everyone. I believe Chef Carlos was up for many hours the night before rolling out the tiny gnocchi for my guests- now that's service! Cocktail hour was such a hit that my guests are still craving the chicken and waffles and bacon wrapped, goat cheese stuffed dates! (Ps- Please let Brian add bacon to your menu! They are bacon magicians). I had such a wonderful experience working with Brian and his entire team from the private food tasting, to his help with referrals, to my wedding day. Brian's staff was professional, looked great, was earlier than on time and even had everything cleaned and organized before they left. Now for Brian's wait staff and bartenders- my guests are STILL talking about the level or service they got! Usually people gush over the flowers, the food, or (blush) the bride! But my guests were most impressed with how wonderfully the staff served the food, tended the bar, cleaned up plates, and glasses never went empty! It started pouring after our cocktail hour, so Brian's staff physically moved one of the bars and all the alcohol/ drinks under the tent and kept pouring the bubbly. If there was an issue, I never knew about it. That's what you want on your wedding day- a caterer who serves amazing food and provides your guests with an amazing experience all while keeping you stress free! Thank you Brian, Carlos and team! You guys are my caterers for life !

I hired Paul and The Dancing Palate for my wedding on November 20, 2015. Paul was wonderful from the start. We had a tasting right away and it went wonderfully. I had contact more than half a dozen caterers but couldn't get them to be as flexible as Paul was especially for the price. The Dancing Palate is a fantastic value. The food was served on time, warm, and I got many compliments after the wedding. We had 135 guests and a 90 minute sit down dinner. I wanted family style with items served in bowls and sharing, yet sit down at the same time. I didn't find many caterers that would do that, but Paul understood me and it was perfect. A real family meal at our rustic classic wedding. I was very happy with the Dancing Palate and if I had to plan my wedding all over again would hire him back.

We started out just looking for someone to offer catering services to our wedding, but we found so much more with Tasty Creations! Chef David and his wonderful wife, Margarita, went above and beyond in every capacity. From the very first sit down, we knew something good was cookin’. The food was absolutely delicious! We had more variety in flavors with our meal choices than we found anywhere else. This dynamic duo not only provided a stellar meal that is fancy, French-cuisine worthy, they also helped us smooth out all the extra details that made our day a tremendous success. Working with Chef and Margarita, we were able to brainstorm some wonderful ideas that really added a lot of value to our wedding. They made planning and preparing for the big day so much fun and when the day came, they made sure that everything was taken care of so all we had left to do was relax, remembers our vows, and enjoy the day. Thank you Chef and Marga! You made our day an absolute wonder! -Jolly Green & String Bean

From start to finish via customer support, service, options, pricing, flexibility, courteous, delivery, set-up, pickup, food presentation, excellent tasting food. This caterer/catering service is without question, without doubt, unequivocally the best! Thank you for Exquisite for being everything you advertise, and even more. The milestone event was a big success largely due to your service. At least several guest preserved the napkins with your contact info, and 1 guest will be contacting you service shortly for their own upcoming event. The food was awesome not only in presentation, but in taste as well! Thank you again!

I used Lori's catering services for a small get together and birthday party for about 30 people. Since I was a novice at party giving, Lori was very good about checking in with me along the way and making suggestions about both the menu and the setup. We had more than enough food which had been a particular worry of mine since I could not picture amounts. The party was for noon on a Sunday and I elected to do sort of a blend between a brunch and a lunch. In particular, the strata, mango salad and berry fruit salad were the most popular and I found that the dressings, sauces and spreads that accompanied the food were what added to the uniqueness of the ham, rolls and other salads. Everything was tasty and fresh. The delivery person was on time and helpful with food placement as it was a buffet style. The dishes were all set to go on platters and we supplied the serving utensils and beverages. I would certainly recommend Lori for whatever occasion you might need these services.

Stop looking for any other caterers and work with these ladies. I hired them to cater my sister's bachelorette/birthday party (20 people) and it was amazing! I asked for an authentic Cuban dinner and they DELIVERED. Everyone was raving about how delicious everything was and we had enough leftover to eat throughout the rest of the weekend (best drunk food ever!). They also went above an beyond and made me a chocolate cake to celebrate my sister's 30th. They even decorated the buffet to go along with our Cuban theme. They also told us about all of these amazing bars to visit while we were there. It was so helpful because none of us had ever been to Miami before. We had an absolute blast, and I can't wait to use them again if I'm ever in Miami! I wish I would've taken some photos of the buffet and the food, but 1) it was destroyed so quickly because everyone was starving. 2) I was so focused on how amazing this cake was (the photos aren't doing it justice)! Thank you again for everything, girls!

Chef Levita did a wonderful job catering my mother's 90th anniversary celebration for 15 people. The food was wonderful and the presentation lovely. He helped me make some very wise choices for my group which I also appreciated. These included summer rolls, sushi, sliced tenderloin, Casear salad, haricots vertes with garlic roasted potatoes and a wonderful, freshly-baked chocolate cake. He and his assistant Carlos made my gathering a great success.

The service that I received from Vicky's catering was catering cocktail style my backyard wedding. Everything was good, my guests really enjoyed the food and they kept everything on track. Even thought it was cocktail style everyone got to eat and was happy with the amount of food they received which as a concern of ours and the quality was great. Vicky's catering also provided the bartenders. They were quite friendly and seemed to be very positive and fun, the only thing I would say is that they need to be more knowledgeable regarding making different kinds of drinks. I did not experience this, it was something said by my guests. The only other thing I would recommend to this business is to improve communication with the client in a timely manner specially when the client reaches out. In the end everything got taken cared of and we were happy, but some minor hicops would have been avoided if there was more communication. Other than that I feel that they provided a great service.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
