For over a year and a half now, for a few hours each month outside of work, Jose has been my Spanish Tutor (private lessons). His knowledge, course materials, patience, and flexibility are excellent, I honestly couldn't imagine working with anyone else. I am looking forward to continuing to work to become proficient in Spanish with Jose!

Ms. Iveth is an absolute gem. She is sweet, caring, flexible and very knowledgeable on child learning techniques. My 4 yr. old daughter has been taking lessons with her for 6 months and she couldn't be more excited about learning Spanish and for Ms. Iveth's weekly visit. She now associates learning new words with also asking how to say them in Spanish. If you are a Spanish speaker who married a non-Spanish speaker (like me) and still want your children to learn the language; this is the way to go. I highly recommend Ms. Iveth to families with young children.

I had one class with Aleyda and I prepaid her for 10 classes upfront. That’s how good she is. She is always punctual and professional. I really gravitated towards her because she seemed prepared to challenge me with material that was appropriate for my level right from the start. Every class she does so. I am engaged and enjoying the journey. That is a rare experience to have with anything. She is charming and knowledgeable. I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for many years and I feel like I am finally making a breakthrough with a Aleyda. You can tell she’s been doing this for a long time. I am definitely prepaying for 10 more classes and most likely the entire year. Don’t hesitate to hire her to learn Spanish now!

Amikka tutoring was one of the best options I could have chosen for my SAT tutoring. My tutor prepared me in a way that most tutoring places will not offer. He really sits down with each of his students to set a plan to achieve each and everyone of their goals that goes way beyond with what one pays for in only two hours. He always checks in with his students to make sure that they are on task and will always respond to any questions or doubts outside of the tutoring session. This tutoring program is truly genuine and effective on any student.

I took Maria Aparicio's 10 hour course a few months ago to start speaking Spanish and travelling to South America. She is the best teacher I had and I was impressed with her skills. I know she holds a Doctorate in Spanish and a Master in Education and teaching foreign languages. She is so knowledgeable about the Spanish language and culture that I learned more than I expected from her. Now I am thinking of doing the 12 week course with her and improve more when I talk in Spanish. All the money I spent with the previous course has paid off. I had some tutors in Spanish before but I truly have to admit that her qualifications exceeded my expectations.

My daughter was doing well academically, but I was concerned about standardized test scores and poor reading fluency. After just a few sessions with Smart Cookie tutoring her scores have gone up and her reading is much improved! The independently tailored and structured reading curriculum provided by Smart Cookie has helped my daughter make great gains. Most importantly my daughter looks forward to her sessions!

About

As a teacher, I have dedicated my life to help kids grow in many ways, one of which is academically. Not all students learn the same way, so it has always been my passion to target specific needs of students, so that they can learn at their highest potential. I have been a 3rd grade teacher for 4 years, and now that I have a master's degree in reading K-12, I will be teaching middle school reading! My goal is to have students share a love for learning and become passionate about their education because knowledge is what every student deserves and needs. I am highly qualified to teach a range of students, from the academically low to the academically high (gifted learners). I am also fully trained and certified to teach elementary math, science, social studies, writing, and reading as well as secondary reading and language arts. Additionally, I am certified to diagnose and remediate struggling readers. Please let me know how I can better assist you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
