I am located in the Miramar/Miami area. I was faced with a horrible situation as I had a large rat in my kitchen. I was terrified and afraid. A friend of mine told me about A True Professional, LLC so I gave them a call. Mr. Ron B came out and was able to put down traps. He was able to capture the rat and returned within 24 hours and removed the animal. I was very satisfied with his services as he was prompt, was thorough with explaining the process to me, and was quick to respond once the animal was caught. He made my day. I would highly recommend his services to others. He was also groomed nicely with a uniform and very professional.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an exterminator during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask exterminators in your area if they would be willing to offer a consultation over a phone call or video chat. You can then ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. Make sure to ask what precautions they are taking to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether they are observing social distancing guidelines. You may ask them if it's possible to conduct the appointment virtually or without person-to-person contact.

How can I find out if an exterminator is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Essential service providers during the COVID-19 crisis are defined by individual states, cities and localities. For the most accurate information, visit your official state or city government website to see what is considered an essential service.

CISA is the government agency that defines critical workers on a national level, so you can check its website for more information. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an exterminator when social distancing?

If you need pest extermination services inside your home, talk to the exterminator first to be sure that you both feel comfortable completing the project. Also, follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing. You can also arrange with the exterminator to take extra steps to stay safe, such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying at least 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing any common spaces before and after the project is complete.

Does an exterminator need to enter my home?

If you have an outdoor pest infestation, it’s unlikely an exterminator will need to enter your home. But if your pest infestation is inside your home, the exterminator will likely need to enter your home. Check with the exterminator beforehand to explain the extent of the problem, the layout of your house and see if they can complete the job outdoors. You can also ask the exterminator to video chat or set up a phone call to exchange as much information as possible before you begin the project.

Do exterminators offer remote or virtual services?

Typically, extermination takes place at your home or place of business, but you can ask if the business is offering special accommodations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across a profile that states the exterminator is offering remote services, ask what those services include. But if the job has to be done in person, be sure to follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing or see if you can postpone your appointment.

How much does it cost to treat a house for termites?

Termites are not only creepy-crawly, they can literally eat your house out from underneath you. Termites feed on damp and dry wood and can chomp through your house at an alarming rate. The national average pest control cost for termite extermination is $240-$400. Treatment costs can be higher for an extensive infestation. Here are some examples of average pest control costs for termites:

  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: $3-$4 per linear foot.
    • For $75 per year, a company may offer a maintenance plan that provides inspection of the property and renewal of the warranty.
  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: approximately $400 for a 2,000-square-foot home at $3-$5 per linear foot.
    • The price is higher for additional work such as foaming and drilling inside of concrete slabs.
  • Fumigation treatment of drywood termites: $1,200-$1,500 for a 30,000- to 35,000-cubic-foot home
    • Fumigation is measured in cubic feet because it fills the airspace of the home and infiltrates the wood that the termites may be colonizing. The cost of fumigation is affected by the number of levels in the home as well as the square footage.

How much does it cost to get rid of cockroaches?

Cockroaches are not only ugly, they are difficult to get rid of. Quick and resilient, they can be hard to get rid of without professional help once they have inhabited a house. Nationally, the average range for cockroach pest control cost is $80-$130. Extermination professionals typically provide a free estimate to determine the extent of the infestation. They’ll check for the main sources of the bugs, identify bug access and entry points into your home, and determine the best method for elimination. There are a variety of cockroach extermination tools including gel baits and traps, pesticide foggers, desiccants (which dry out the cockroaches), neurotoxins, and other pesticides. Pest control costs can also cover preventive measures like regular spraying and trap maintenance. Some regions of the country are much more prone to cockroach problems than others, so pest control costs may need to be part of your quarterly budget. Cockroaches love dark, humid, and warm areas and water sources, so place traps near your washer and dryer and under your sinks.

How long does a bed bug treatment last?

Bed bug extermination can last forever as long as the treatment killed all the bed bugs (and their eggs) and if new bed bugs are not transported into the location. Factors that can affect the outcome are how severe the infestation is and whether all bed bug sources were properly identified and treated. When working with a pest control professional, the EPA recommends you check and call references; ask if they offer both chemical and non-chemical treatment options, if they recommend both encasements and interceptors, and if they offer two or more service visits and follow-up. Bed bugs are tiny (adults are roughly the size of an apple seed) and can hide anywhere a credit card can slide into. They squeeze into cracks in walls, behind electrical outlet sockets, in bedding, and in other dark places. Learn how to prepare your home for a bed bug treatment for the best outcomes. Michigan State University shares some examples of possible reasons that a bed bug extermination is not 100 percent effective:

  • Not all sources (aka hiding places) of the bed bugs were identified during initial inspection.
  • Not all sources of bed bugs were treated.
  • The insecticides used were not effective or, in the case of heat treatment, there was insufficient contact time.
  • Infested items such as bedding or other materials were reintroduced into a cleaned area.

How do you check for bed bugs?

If you are concerned you have a bed bug infestation, look for physical signs of their presence. Bed bugs love to hide in small, dark spaces and typically come out to feed (generally on human blood) after dark — although they will come out in daylight if hungry enough. The Environmental Protection Agency states that indications of an infestation can include seeing shed exoskeletons of bed bugs, rusty spots on your bedding (which are either bug droppings or bloodstains), live bed bugs, bed bug egg casings, a sweet and musty odor (if the infestation is severe), and evidence of bites on your skin.

To spot bed bugs, look in and along mattress seams and bedding, in curtain and furniture folds, inside cracks or crevices in the walls, behind picture frames and mirrors, under loose wallpaper seams, on recently used luggage or backpacks, inside electronics, and inside clothing or cluttered areas such as closets. If you see signs of bed bugs, be careful not to disturb them too much as you don’t want them scattering to other parts of your house.

My issue was taken care of quickly. I'm pleased that this company relocates the bees rather than exterminates them.

Second time using this company. They have kept my house bug free :). Guarantee was for 2 months, didnt see a live insect for 8. I reached out and received a response within 2 hrs. Exterminator showed up on time. He thoroughly checked the house and made sure he sprayed areas where insects can gain access inside. Will use this company again.

Stay away! Scammer! On the personal level, very nice guy; but professionally terrible experience. First of all he says he has expertise in termites and he shows up with his brother in law who I believe watched a couple of videos on YouTube and now they are going around scamming people. This is my experience: They came in for an inspection. On that day I was recording videos of what they were saying (with their permission) so that I could share with my husband later. Any questions that I would ask Kurt he would refer to his brother in law; so I realized right away that he didn't know what was going on. I have them on video telling me that I had a huge infestation and that their spot treatment would treat the issue and would kill the termites on contact, instantly. Initially that day they would point with an infrared camera (which you can rent at home depot yourself) to the walls and they would say things like "oh woww look at that nest over there" "oh wow huge activity over here" and they would point to yellow/red areas with the camera in the walls. They charged me by #of walls that they saw "activity" with camera. I asked them if it would be better to tent and they said "well it will require a crane bc your house is 2 stories and your infestation is very condensed to specific areas" "we believe it should be fine if we spot treat". That should have been my red flag but I believed them and hired them. They also said that we had to be outside the house bc it was very strong etc. When they came to do the service, my family and dogs stepped out and only my husband stayed inside with an N95 mask. He took pictures of the chemical that were using and guess what? It is a stored bought can that you can get yourself at home depot that costs $25 and it's called Fipro. They just drilled huge holes in my walls, sprayed that foam inside and put a disgusting gray cap in the hole and left the wall like that unfinished. they went about their thing, "finished", charged and left. We were told not to go in for 4 hrs after. When I come back I realized that they treated half the walls they said I needed to be treated and charged me for. I called and they came back to retreat a couple days later. On that second time around, I asked them if they could show me with their camera that I had no more termites in the walls. And reluctantly, they point the camera and guess what? The same image as the first time was there! And I ask them wait what is that? There are still termites and they respond oh no that's the heat emitting from the outside that concentrates in the junction of the wood beam between the wall and the ceiling. And I confronted them about it and asked them well the first time you said that was a huge nest of termites and now you are saying that's heat from the outside? They were like we'll no it was a mixture blah blah blah now they are gone. So either they lied the first time in making me believe that I had a bigger problem than what I really had. Or what they did, didn't work and I still have termites. 1 month later I still have termites bc I see their wings laying around my home and when I texted him about it he now says it's normal for them to take longer than 2-4 weeks to die. Mind you, during the inspection they said it was instant! Upon contact! But if you read the Fipro can it says up to 7hrs if done correctly or may need retreatment. In any case, terrible experience and completely waisted my money. Now I have to do a REAL termite extermination and hire someone to patch up the walls that they completely destroyed. I hope this is helpful and that no one hires them for that job bc I would hate to have anyone else be scammed by them like I was.
