We had a tree cut down on our very tiny front yard and wanted to have grass installed. Unfortunately, a blanket of massive roots remained entangled just under the surface of the entire yard, making it was impossible to level. No company would accept the job when they saw the photos, most didn't even reply. Gene Earl and his crew stepped up, saying they enjoyed a challenge. They brought in the heavy equipment needed to tackle the impossible and grinded away remaining trunk and a gazillion roots. They carted off 316 lbs. for disposal. They did a wonderful job of leveling and laying turf, leaving us with a yard far, far beyond our expectations. We couldn't be happier with this company.

I wanted Mr. Moore to help redo my front yard landscape. He did a great job with his crew. He removed all my existing landscape and also trimmed couple of medium oak trees to increase the visibility of the house to the street. Planted a variety of plants after getting the design approved by me and also transported and put in the fountain that I have purchased separately. Very professional and courteous service. Will definitely hire again for similar work.

Pablo and The crew was prompt, responsive and cleaned up after themselves each day. He worked within our budget and created a complete landscape experience as oppose to just installing plants. He utilized plants, artificial turf and ground cover to give us a very unique but usable landscape design. His knowledge of his products and how they related to our conditions was exceptional and was able to convey that to us in a way we understood. We would highly recommend Firefly Landscaping Contractors to anyone looking for that WOW landscape experience. And will definitely use them again for other projects we have Property is a Downtown Lake Lawsona District with back yard 50ft wide by 60 deep to work with

Kevin and his team did an outstanding job and to fully understand how outstanding I need to provide some context. I had to replace my septic drain field and during the process the septic company destroyed my front yard. Irragation system was in pieces and my yard was now just dirt. I had to use two irrigation companies that charged me way too much and their work was poor at best. I had several companies provide me quotes for removing the left over sod and I stalling new sod. All of the estimates except for Kevin where way over priced and provided no information on how they would complete the work. Kevin explained the different sod options, gave me a detail quote for each area of the work, and the date when he would complete everything. No prepayment. During the sod installation, Kevin noticed that the sod was below the quality he expects, 1/2 of the sod was bad. He explained what the issue was and worked with the sod management company to replace the bad sod at no cost to me. That attention to detail and pride in his work is seldom seen. Sod is I stalled, looks awesome and neighbors are giving me complements. Highly recommend Kevin and his team!!

I really cannot say enough great things about Science Tech, Michael himself and his work ethic. I took a chance on Science Tech as they didn't have a lot of online reviews available at the time, though the ones they did have were all positive and I can see why. I have not been disappointed, Michael is a true professional and was able to explain every available option to us, and give us the pros and cons of each choice without price gouging. Many times Michael would actually save us money by pointing us to what we needed instead of what we thought we needed, even though he could have easily profited by our lack of experience and knowledge. Rarely does one find someone as exceptional as Michael in his line of business, especially given his youthful disposition. We had three other vendors come over to provide estimates before Science Tech, and Michael blew them all out of the water both with his knowledge and his product offerings. These other companies were all top level companies but everything they demonstrated to us was substandard when compared to the equipment Science Tech offered, and the prices from Science Tech were on par or better. Better equipment and better pricing! I really have had no complaints with Michael or Science Tech. Michael is hands on and doesn't just send his junior staff to your house, he either comes in person or sends his best guys to do the job. In fact when Michael first came over I had three outdoor electrical outlets without power. I had just spent a couple of hundred dollars on an electrician I found with a 95% rating on xyz list and the guy couldn't find or fix the issue. Michael also happens to be a licensed electrician, and when I mentioned the issue during our initial consult, he offered to fix it. I thought he was joking but within five minutes he located a GFCI that had tripped that was hidden behind some shelves in our garage and had the power back on! We had moved in a few months prior and had no idea that circuit was even there. You could tell that Michael knew what he was doing as he knew exactly where the circuit had to be located, based on the electrical code. Primarily, I had Science Tech come in to install security cameras, but since then I have also hired them to work on some additional electrical issues in my house and even change out some fans I had on the porch. I really don’t think there is anything Michael cannot do and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him or Science Tech again.

Anthony and Mike just spent the day trimming all my palm trees. PROFESSIONALS in their field. What detail they did on the clean up. I have a palm tree with 10 fronds over new mulch. There is not a blemish on the new mulch. All the other trees have white rocks under them, no mess was left. Great work guys. Thank you very much. Ray Pettyjohn, Nokomis Florida.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
