Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

Can you mount a TV in drywall?

Yes, it’s possible to mount a TV on drywall. To make sure the job is done right and you don’t end up damaging your wall or injuring yourself, consider contacting one of the best TV wall mount installers near you. When contacting professionals, make sure you tell them you wish to mount a TV in drywall.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Ted from Apex Review installed a wall mounted TV bracket for me over the weekend. Responded quickly and was able to install the next day. He needed some different hardware to complete the job and went to Home Depot but they were out of stock. In order to get the job done he called a colleague for help which luckily he had the screws required. I will be calling Apex Fix for future jobs.

Greg is not only an expert in anything a handy man might be required to do, but he's the nicest person as well! I asked Greg to come install 3 wall mounts, and last minute I asked him to also install 2 ceiling fans - he didn't even flinch. He got the job done extremely quickly and perfectly, walking me through what height I wanted the tv's and giving excellent recommendations, provided some great conversation (which was asked for, he minded his business otherwise), and even helped with fixing my bed frame which he pointed out was incorrectly reassembled a few days ago by a moving company. He also quoted me at much cheaper rate than many the other pros, who also weren't as well rated. BOOK GREG ASAP! I certainly will again

This was not a great experience by any means!! Let me start by saying that my fiancé and I both struggled in understanding the techs because they only spoke Portuguese. The language barrier made things more difficult when I was not happy with the TV placement because it was all the way to the right of the wall ((photo attached)) Once they left I reached back out and requested to have someone else come out to fix the issue because we had just spend almost $600 and requested we had someone who spoke either English/Spanish. The treatment I received because of this request was disgusting. I was made to feel like I was somehow being racist when I had repeated over and over that the techs were respectful and nice, but it was just too hard to communicate. They tried to send the same techs back because as the “owner” told us he only handles larger installs and this was not something he typically handles. After about an hour of going back and forth we finally agreed on having someone else come back out the following day. We were able to communicate, but the tech belittled me in my own house by telling me and my fiancé that White, Asian and others they dealt with never had issues with the language barrier. The reality is aside from the customer service issues was the actual work itself. The new tech moved the TV but this time it was too far left. They also just left the holes from the previous mount and tape. Then came the revelation that the TV mounted over the fireplace was not on studs. So despite us being happy with that install the tech stated they wanted to purchase a large rod to make sure it was on a stud but that they would need to come out again. Now we are on appointment number 3… He said he would come out the following Thursday, but never even followed up so we realized on Saturday they had not called so we reached out. The part still had not arrived, we moved it to the following week. In this time we ordered a $90 centering mount for the TV in the room as well. This last time I was unable to be at the house, but it was finally completed. I felt after what we had spent for the service it was not handled properly. We were made to feel like we were inconveniencing them when we were the pay clients. I now wish I had paid a little more for a higher priced company.
