Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

We had an amazing experience with Patricia. She arrived for my clients wedding on time and took some amazing pictures. Patricia worked to make sure that all photos were taken of the ceremony and reception areas while they were fresh! She even made sure that the couple and their guests were photographed so that they remember all at their wedding. I would definitely hire her again!!

Kimberly and Richard were amazing. We planned our photo shoot and wedding video long distance and everything was picture perfect. They did everything they could to make our day special even Kimberly helping me get buttoned into my wedding gown. They were both so friendly, fun and helpful to capture our special wedding moments. I needed a photographer very last minute to photograph my parents 50th wedding anniversary party and take quality pictures of our immediate family members since we'd all be present and dressed formal. Simone really came through for us. He arrived early to set up and didn't leave until all of the important photographs of our event were taken even beyond what our contract stated. He was wonderful to work with. Very professional very accommodating, wonderful customer service and affordable. He really saved the day. He took wonderful and creative pictures and went above and beyond what our contract stipulated. He really made sure to capture the important moments of our events as well as candid ones. I would highly recommend Simone. I think I've just found our family photographer.

There was no communication between them and us about what type of pictures we wanted. They made assumptions about us that were incorrect and resulted in bad pictures. During our engagement shoot they gave very little direction, which resulted in pictures of us standing awkwardly. The edits that they did to our photos looked like they could have been done on a smart phone. The communication that we did have with them was unprofessional. They were not willing to take criticism and blamed us for the photos being bad. We have since cancelled our contract with them for our wedding day. They were very aggressive and rude when the topic of money came up and refused to return any part of our deposit for the wedding. This was after we had given them a gift card as a token of good will to pay for their gas to get to the engagement shoot which we did not have to do. They didn't seem to care about us. They only seemed to care about the money we were paying them. Overall terrible experience.

We had such a great experience with Kim and Rick. Because we had a courthouse wedding we had some last minute time changes. They were so accommodating and understanding. We are pretty picky with our family photos and usually end up with only a handful we like, but the album Kim and Rick sent us has so many great options we have over 30 we want to print and frame. I definitely recommend them.

Brides, Beware: Avoid this photographer. I trusted the judgment of Debra to take wonderful, lasting memories. She arrived with a broken lens (of which she was aware), so many of the entrance shots were lost. Instead, our wedding album is full of staged, unflattering photos, shot at an awful angle, where I stand barefoot (even though I was advised numerous times my feet were not visible). The worst part of the entire ordeal, however, was her behavior at lunch. Debra scolded my husband and me when she brought up the discussion of children, stating it is necessary to have them make my parents happy. She then dragged my mother into the conversation, demanding her views on it. I felt sick. Debra then proceeded to criticize those at Theme Parks who use a Disability Pass. My father-in-law, who uses such pass, looked on in awe. Never have I felt so disrespected in my life. When I reached out to Debra with these challenges, she hardly apologized for her behavior. When I asked her how to fix the situation, her response was to photo-shop my shoes into the photos and touch them up more, which is unacceptable; there was no offer of compensation or reshoots. Update: Debra did reach out to me regarding this review, hinting at legal action if I did not delete/modify it.

Ramon was awesome! He was so personable and I was excited to work with him from the moment we talked for the first time! He was super responsive leading up to the day, and also so so accommodating! He made everything super clear and and was so helpful with recommendations, and just knew exactly everything to do as a wedding photographer! When he came out to the big day He already knew exactly everything that I wanted and was so on top of it the whole time! I am so glad we were able to capture everything I truly wanted (especially since we were working against sunset) But he and my coordinator had it handled so well! He was so fun and soooo nice, he even was dancing salsa on the dance floor with us while taking pictures! He got our pictures back to us so quickly, just in time for the holidays and they were beautiful, with the exact edits that I imagined! You will not regret working with Ramon, he was amazing!
