Excellent. Professional, arrives on time, works well with my dog and myself. He has given me SO much insight as to my dog's behavior and why she acts the way she does. I understand my dog better now. Love that he writes "homework" for us so I can refer back to that. Also if I run into a problem with my dog between sessions, he promptly texts me back and tells me how to correct the behavior (or how I should be responding to my dog). A+ highlt recommend Cliff! 😊

Wendy understands dogs and knows how to get the best behavior out of each individual dog (working with their needs and personality, and at their level). Not only were the classes straight forward with a positive approach but Wendy demonstrated time and time again she cares about dogs. My puppy was a rescue one and had a traumatic experience outside of class and Wendy went above and beyond to get Gemma back on track before the end of the puppy classes. She is personable and practical, and always willing to answer questions and provide help. This class has been a very positive experience, and I appreciate her care, knowledge and expertise with my Chihuahua. Nesira Baker, Gemma's owner

Jane's work with behavioral training is so integral for not only the dogs but also the family. She assisted me personally with better understanding of my dog's behavior, the nature of it, and my reactions to my dog. She was able to help guide me to improve upon the positive energy and reinforcement I could give to my dog for the best outcomes of behavior. I highly recommend Jane for her knowledge and understanding of both animal behaviors and the impact of the family systems.

From our first training session to our last, Carol was engaged, informative and enthusiastic. Rather than dictating what each session would entail, she listened to our specific concerns about our puppy and tailored our sessions to best fit our priorities. Our puppy Murray began training with a very minimal understanding of commands, and after completing his final session, is consistently sitting, staying and coming, as well as responding to his name when called, and more. It was evident that Carol's approach to training is one focused on not only improving the dog's behavior, but also on ensuring the owners have the tools they need for continued success with their dog. We couldn't be happier with our choice to hire Carol - highly recommended!

OMG!! My life changed when Erinn Tackett entered McKenna's world. I have a 1 1/2 year old Portuguese Water Dog, that was out of control. Four months later, McKenna is well behaved, I can take her anywhere and do. Erinn and I continue to sharpen her obedience skills, and she is now a great dog and companion. I highly recommend Erinn for behavior, obedience and service/therapy. She has a magical way with dogs.

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

Kelly is fantastic. She is great with pups. She went out of her way to understand our Hound and helped us find a way to combat most of her negative behaviors. Tiger is a completely different dog after our sessions. My relationship with my pup has changed in the best way possible and I owe it to Kelly. Thank you!!

Cindy has been a breath of fresh air to work with. Her passion and knowledge shined through each session with my shih-tzu Fiona. We thank you so much for helping with crate training, battling through Fiona shutting down outside, sitting, and so much more! Fiona was bitten by another dog and Cindy completely turned things around behaviorally. She helped bring our pup back to walking outside and using behavior modification to adjust to loud noises and reintroduce socializing with other dogs. Thank you for everything!

Carlos is an awesome canine trainer. He improved the relationship I have with my dog. I experienced the improvement after the first session. He spend a lot of time explaining the dogs behavior & taught me how to respond to each behavior. I now have an obedient dog while maintaining a balanced relationship. He has so much knowledge & experience. I did not realize my counter productive behavior until our sessions. I recommend Green to Alpha for all new dog owners.

For the majority of dog owners, choosing the right dog trainer is one of the most important decisions they will have to make regarding their dog. Upon becoming new dog parents to a Dandie Dimmout Terrier named Winston, I often found myself saying "no one knows my dog like I do." Through the training and guidience of Bijan, owner of ORA Dog Training, we realized that we weren’t truly understanding Winston. Bijan trained us to understand our dog’s needs and natural tendencies and the proper way to handle them so that we could live happier lives as dogowners, and most importantly, that Winston could live a happier dog life! While many dog owners might be proficient handlers, Bijan possessed a skillset and information in which he mastered, and the gap between a well-meaning, intelligent dog owner and a trained professional. Bijan is a great listener and is interested in your take on your dog's characteristics, tendencies, personal history, strengths and weaknesses. Rather than immediately dictating who and what needs to change, Bijan starts by sitting down and talking through expectations, concerns and philosophies before starting any actual training or behavior modification work. Bijan was a great communicator both in terms of listening to our questions and concerns as well teaching us and our dog. We were enthused that he wanted to know everything possible about the dog's background so that he could more quickly and effectively identify root causes and implement a positive training protocol. Bijan always included us in the training. He would constantly and effectively communicate what he was doing, and one of his primary goals was for us to step in and eventually take over the actual training with our dog, Winston. Bijan does not only train your dog, but more importantly, he trains you to properly guide your dog. When we first met with Bijan, Winston was a total brat! Did what he wanted, when he wanted, and didn’t understand what we were trying to communicate to him. To be honest, we were skeptical as to how much progress was possible with our disobedient pup, but like magic, after the first hour-long session at our apartment, the progress was amazingly positive! We couldn’t even walk Winston without him sitting on the sidewalk and resisting. Now, Winston is a calm obedient dog (when we want him to be) but he is still the active loveable puppy he has always been. I recommend Bijan to all my friends who own a dog or who are bringing a new dog into their home. Bottom line, hands down, ORA Dog Training are miracle workers and are extremely patient, understanding, and courteous to dogs and their owners!

Steve has been caring for my 2 cats for the past 10 years. I make 3 to 4 trips to Houston every year to spend time with my family from 7 to 10 days at a time. Steve has made this possible by feeding, watering and cleaning up after my cats daily. He saved me a fortune in "boading fees". He is very good with animals, extremely trustworthy and respectful of my home and privacy. If you need someone to take care of your home and animals while you are away, you could not make a better choice than Steve.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
