I had a Reiki therapy session with Sarene this week after a speaking to my PCP about alternative methods of controlling everyday stress and general anxiety. By nature, I am skeptic and cynic, so trying new things is usually something I do not look forward too. I did my own research with other physicians and online resources which led me to the conclusion that some experiences for certain types of people are more acute, for someone like me, I probably would not feel anything. After all, there should be a feeling to healing at some point. I set an appointment with Sarene and she was considerate with my work schedule, I thought worst case scenario, I could tell my PCP that I tried Reiki and it might not be for me. Sarene gave me a brief summary of what the goals were for the session and answered the few odd questions I had. I won't go into too much detail of my experience, since I feel personally, each person responds differently to different stimuli (whether it is spiritual, emotional, mental, etc). What I can say is that I surprisingly felt stress-less after the session. Not a mindless, bumbling, it's the weekend, yodo, type stress-less. There was the sensation of removing the aggregate of stress, packing them up and moving them outside of my mind, type of stress-less. I know they are still there but they are not as close as they were before. It's difficult for me to say how long this will last and how much this can be repeated with the same effect. I also cannot say that I am a true believer but I can say for certainty if your goal is seeking some type of stress and anxiety relief, without medicine or drugs, Reiki can make it possible. Sarene has definitely made a great impression on a skeptic. I cannot remember the last time I received a service that I paid for that I would say left me feeling "awesome" and definitely falls under an awesome experience.

I began working with Suzy West in April of 2014. Her holistic approach in using acupuncture is what drew me to work with Suzy. Over the years, we have worked on many chronic health issues that did not respond to "traditional" treatment - stress headaches, digestive issues, and muscle issues are a few. Suzy is totally focused on her patient, carefully listens to her history, and is fully engaged in the healing. She poses thoughtful questions to clarify all facets of the problem. Working with Suzy has impacted my life and health in a positive way. I have recommended consultations with Suzy to several people for a variety of ailments and would encourage anyone considering acupuncture to schedule an appointment with her. Gayle Young-Monroe

I was having bad problems with plantar fasciitis. I gave up on western conventional medicine. I do not like the possible side effects and when I stopped taking it the pain started again. I have a job that has me on my feet for long hours and the pain was getting unbearable. I met Dr. Yang at M&M vitamins in Lake Mary and went to see him for treatment. I could not believe the relief I got after treatment. After several treatments my pain was gone. Dr. Yang is very knowledgeable and compassionate. I know that he genuinely cares. I still see him once a month for maintenance. I would and do recommend Dr. Yang to everyone.

Patty is a very powerful healer and Reiki practitioner. I was not very familiar with Reiki and it is difficult to adequately describe the sensation. It felt like a cross between electricity, vibration and energy all at the same time. I could not recommend her highly enough. She is the real deal.

I found Marlo @ Four Seasons Acupuncture when conventional physical therapy from an auto accident aggravated a previous knee injury. Her gentle treatment manner was comforting and beneficial to my recovery from the auto injuries, anxiety & PTSD as well as the previous knee injury. I highly recommend Marlo @ Four Seasons Acupuncture.

Dr. Anca has treated me on a number of occasions for pain. I am a former competitive athlete that has sustained multiple injuries including being struck by a car while training on my bike. Dr. Anca has treated my neck and back pain as well as nerve and severe headaches. Her results are immediate and impressive. Other docs see me for a few minutes and prescribe drugs. Dr. Anca treats and heals during your visit. I strongly recommend her....she will make a positive difference! .......................Justin L. Longwood, Florida

I have been going to Carlos for circulatory therapy for several months. When I first started treatment, I was told of the benefits to my body, but was blown away after only 2 treatments on how it improved my health. I had been under a detoxification program with my holistic doctor for the past year, and had become discouraged because my lymphatic system was still blocked and not draining out any toxins. Within 2 treatments, I went from taking 17 supplements under my holistic doctor's care, to 5 supplements. My doctor was shocked that my lymphatic system draining so well all of a sudden. I found that I had more energy, slept better, and what really shocked me was that I experienced less aches and pains. Carlos really makes it affordable for treatment and really cares about improving our health.

Dr Liu has been a great help to me in many ways. When I finally decided to try acupuncture and Chinese herbs I made an appointment to see Dr Liu. She took a personal interest in my concerns and wellbeing... the intake process is detailed and thorough. My neck and back pains have subsided substantially and after putting up with it for YEARS... because no physical therapist or MD had the answers. I have also been taking hebals and my sleep and other issues (quite personal) are getting back on track remarkably well. I recommend Dr Liu and her herbal pharmacy 100%.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

    • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
    • Nutritional medicine
    • Botanical medicine
    • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
    • Hygiene
    • Counseling
    • Minor surgery
    • Homeopathy
    • Acupuncture
    • Intravenous and injection therapy
    • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

    Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

    Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

    • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
      • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
    • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
      • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
      • Do I need a referral?
      • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
      • What will the co-pay be?
      • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
    • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.
