John was easy to work with, flexible and knowledgeable. He was able to pinpoint the issues that needed to be addressed for my dishwasher installation and was patient when dealing with the job which was more complicated than it initially seemed. Would use again.

Mario showed up on time. Knew what he was doing. He installed a hot water heater for me and said to check it 30 minutes after he hooked up it. I checked it 30 minutes after he hooked it up and it works fine. He is also a nice man to deal with.

I must say by far the best, most honest and timely experience working with any A/C company I have ever hired for any of my homes in 17 years! I'm not much of a haggler, and frankly I dislike when other companies inflated their prices expecting me to haggle, I wanted no games and great work, that's what I want to pay for, and that's exactly what I got with Luis and his crew. I know the kind of equipment I wanted and what I was requesting, L.A.R's pricing was spot on to what I expected to pay for the high level of efficient air, and a new wi-fi thermostat, and again Luis's price was exactly what I expected far better then any of his competitors. Don't get me wrong, I have zero knowledge of HVAC, and still had many questions and uncertainties for what is suitable for my home, set an appointment at my house, and Luis answered all of my questions with ease and made the most honest recommendations, even when I was ready to pay more for something I really didn't need and he steered me in the correct direction, not rushed as with other companies rushing to go to the next job appointment. From beginning to end I felt like I was dealing with a friend of mine looking out for my best interest, and when the job was done, everything was perfect! You have earned my business for new units and service upkeep for life. Again, I'm truly blown away by the level of service with L.A.R, I'm loving my new high efficient air conditioning.

Jose arrived at my home and quickly resolved the issue with my ac unit! On the same day, later that night, my air-conditioners fan broke and damaged the motor in the ac unit. Jose came right back the following morning and repaired it quickly and at a great price. I love that he had parts in his truck and I didn’t have to wait. Jose was friendly knowledgeable and I will definitely be calling him again! He’s the best!

I had to replace my air conditioning system sooner or later. After getting estimates from three different contractors I decide it to call PSI. The salesman Polo, took a look at my old unit and collected several pictures, 15 minutes later he gave me a quote and it wasn’t the cheapest one, but let me tell you how happy I am for choosing this guys because they diid an amazing job and left my garage cleaner than they found it.

My A/C unit was 12 years old and developed a freon leak. I called my "then" A/C company. They sent out a technician that quoted me a ridiculous troubleshooting price, and then an equally ridiculous A/C unit replacement price. Based on the age of the unit, I knew it was time to replace it and that spending the money to trouble shoot would be wasteful. I called Speedy to get a second quote. Dave responded very quickly and came out to look at our situation and provided a quote that was 34% lower than the other guy. These are the reasons I choose Speedy and will continue to have them as my A/C company. 1. Dave has years of experience in the industry. 2. Dave is a man of his word. - Because he could not install my new unit for a few days, he said he would get our existing unit to provide cooling until they could perfom the install...they did and free of charge. 3. They showed up for the install when they said they would be there. 4. Their prices are in line with what you would expect as reasonable. 5. They provide excellent financing options. 6. They treated our home with respect and ensured everything was as they found it before leaving. 7. They followed up after the install to ensure we were satisfied. Overall, they made a bad situation as good as it could be.

Temperature Pro are... professional. Our AC decided to stop working and we called them with an emergency and they came first thing in the morning and when expected. They clearly know AC units as Patrick our tech thoroughly tested and diagnosed our problem. He replaced the programmable thermostat which was part of the issue. He even followed up to be sure all was OK. We had cold air and a comfortable home once again. Highly recommended. Thank you Temperature Pro! Honest, reliable, punctual, professional... simply the best and now our AC service pros. We'll let the neighbors know too!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

      • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
      • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
      • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
      • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
        • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
      • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
        • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
      • Your home has humidity problems.
      • Your home has excessive dust.
        • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
      • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
        • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
      • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
        • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
