Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

It was such a pleasure doing business with ALLGOOD TILE. The backsplash they installed is beautiful, and they completed the project before my move in date at an excellent price. The 3 brothers were so professional and easy to work with. I will use ALLGOOD TILE for my next tile project.

I have been a custom home builder for 40 years in South Carolina. Michael is one of the best tile setters I have ever come across. I had 3 different tile installers working on my project all very good. Michael was head and shoulders above the others. Absolutely outstanding! An added bonus was the fact that he spoke excellent English. He is a pleasure to work with.

Installed wood look tile in our home that we remodeled picchione and son did an amazing job. Very thorough you can tell they have been doing tile work a long time. They also redid our third bath shower and floor and it came out stunning. I highly recommend them very professional and clean. I will be using them again for our master bath.

Communication between Ashley and her crew was not good. They accidentally tore up a perfectly good wooden floor in a room they weren’t supposed to be in. Then they wanted to be paid for the tile necessary to repair the room. They laid cracked tile in several places and refused to replace it. They simply grouted the cracks and moved on. Destroyed most of my base boards and left with no floor transitions installed. Worst vendor I have used in twenty years.

Couldn’t be happier with the installation of our backsplash. Solon spent all day here, and transformed our kitchen. Punctual, high quality, polite, and the price was very reasonable. Will use again for my investment properties and any further tile work.

We are very happy with the quality of work and the price to tear out old and install 1600+ square feet of porcelain tile. The tear out was a bigger job than expected because there was 2" of mortar under existing tile. Larry was very fair with the additional cost associated with the added work. They did a fantastic job and treated this project as though it was their home. I was very impressed with how much effort they put into doing the best job possible. Larry and team were always responsive when we had questions. We hired them to do more tile work and would highly recommend them.

I hade wood tile installed and they look great! There were some communication issues with the workers and the project manager. I was told they would be working on the weekend and nobody showed up so the project took longer than discussed. The workers also left a bit of a mess in my house and did not move my furniture back. I also hired them to install the base boards and assumed that included a full finished installation, which it did not. They installed the boards, but did not fill in nail holes or paint them. The owner gave me a discount due to the problems I had with the services, so that was appreciated.

Marcos transformed my dated two bathrooms into modern masterpieces! He is a perfectionist who installed new lights, bath fixtures, vanities and tile. He cleaned up after his work each day, and left my home spotless. I recommend him highly to anyone seeking a bath upgrade.

Douglas and his team did an awesome job!!!! He was able to start our job quickly (within one week of contacting him) and the finished product looks amazing! He even installed new baseboards for us! If you need a great tile job, hire Douglas! I would definitely hire again.

Excellent work. OG installed a 25 ft.² glass tile backsplash in the kitchen. Just beautiful. All aspects of the job were exceptional. He took good care of the granite countertops and cabinets by covering them with plastic. When he was done he shimmed the electrical outlets and correctly replaced the electrical outlet covers. Will definitely hire again.

Alex was absolutely incredible during his time working on our tile. He took on a huge job for us, removing tile in 3 bathrooms and the kitchen. Not only that, but he installed a beautiful backsplash and front of our bar island. Alex is very talented and most of all, professional. His work is tremendous, his price is always fair, and id recommend him to anyone who needs his services. Most importantly, he cares deeply about his work, and makes sure it is perfect for you. It is always refreshing when the man you hired cares as much about the finished product as you do! Thanks Alex!

BOTTOM LINE FIRST: Job they did was Excellent.... however,, this is my experience with them... They lowball quoted an amount sight unseen,,, then when they were hired and appeared,, they began to increase the price,,, saying you need this and you need that...most of what they said and charged for was correct,,,, but there were attempts at charges which were not justified... Also,, they originally quoted 2 days,, but took 6 days to complete,,, this meant staying in and paying for a hotel while they completed...Their work day was never long,,, and they always got a late start,, must be a Florida price was more than double the $original$ quote,,, but was competitive with other quotes I had received,,, and they were very accommodating with what needed to be done during the installation.... Would I recommend them,,, Yes,, but be prepared to go through what I have outlined here....Our scope of work was removing and disposing of an existing 500 sq ft laminate floor and install our already purchased porcelain wood-look tiles at an angle installation and complete removal and replacement of all baseboards.... Again, finished project was Excellent !!
