Professor Lunsford was my Statistics teacher at the University of South Florida. I also went to him for private tutoring. He explained concepts to me in way that was easy for me to understand. Dr. Lunsford is very knowledgeable and an outstanding educator. He made learning a lot of fun and showed genuine concern for his students. He always was passionate about his career and it showed. I wish all professors and tutors were more like him! I graduated in 2011 and live in Washington State. Even on the opposite side of the country he has been a wonderful mentor!

Spiritual Counseling My experience with Anne Chastain has been very positive. When we first began, we talked about spirituality and religious matters. Before working with Anne I had lost all faith. I’m happy to say that I’m back on a spiritual path. I also wanted to get my life on track, so Anne became the best life coach anyone could have. Anne is such a good listener. Out of all I said, Anne was able to glean what was most important to me in life and somehow she turned that into a career path, as well! I’m not there, yet, but we’re getting there, together. I don’t where I’d be without her. If you’re reading this, Anne, may God bless you for all you’ve done for me.

Brian Zaas has been my Life Coach for over 2 years. He is far more resourceful and patient than I could have ever expected. His methods are grounded, he listens, and he doesn't exactly tell you what you need to do, he helps you figure out the best path in whatever situation you find yourself in. To have an experienced and credible person like Brian focusing on my life has been a game changer for me, my family, and my career. I recommend Brian with the fullest confidence.

Davita is a truly remarkable therapist. No words can describe the amount of gratitude I have for her. She is a gifted therapist that has watched me transition from a disempowered state to that of an empowered one. With her intensive knowledge of hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, I was able to transition into the person I've always dreamt of personally, professionally, and financially. She has a spirit about her, that is inviting, encouraging and supportive that you need in a therapist and support system. She allowed me to understand and recognize my limiting beliefs and negative patterns to transform them into empowering thought and patterns, that has given me life long success and effective coping mechanisms. One of the best experts I've known, and had the pleasure of working with.

She has helped me with all aspects of reestablishing my career and business, including: client retention, branding, marketing and even resume and press release writing. We've been working together for almost two months. Her broad business acumen has been super valuable. She's been very 'worth it'!

I would like to highly recommend Steve Sapato and his Seminars. I have found Steve to be very knowledgeable, humorous, informed and sensitive to his audiences and the subject matter at hand. His delivery method keeps audiences engaged and learning and isn't that what seminars are all about. His knowledge of management styles and how to improve them would be invaluable to any organization experiencing transition from non-management personnel into management positions, as well as improving the methods and interaction of existing managers. Likewise, Steve's understanding and sensitivity to personal relationship matters is "on point". His ability to objectively view a subject and recommend a plan of action has and will continue to help many, many individuals and couples. What they did for me was to radically change the direction of my professional life into something of meaning and purpose and the ability to earn money doing what I love to do! This, in turn, contributed to my personal life and made me realize how able and talented I am and have been for some time. They helped me clarify my passions, purposes and skills in ways I had not previously considered and that made a huge difference! Thanks!

So far Joanna is a God send! She simply 'get's it' and is compassionate yet pulls out the necessary information. Along with goals and homework. I would consider her superior in her field for marriage counseling! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her!

Todd was able to help me overcome some serious stumbling blocks in both my life and my career. His probing questions forced me to think and consider many things in my life. I couldn't be happier with where I have moved to after working with Todd and although I planned a short term coaching experience I don't think I will be stopping this anytime soon. The value he brings is top notch.

Marieke is one of the steadiest, most insightful people I know. Her nurturing nature compels her to want the best of everything for everyone. When you combine this with a quick wit and delightful sense of humor, you have someone you want with you during any transition in life. Marieke will make a marvelous wedding officiate: one I am sure couples will recommend happily. She LOVES all aspects of a wedding - the details, the relationships, the excitement and most of all, I believe, the deep connection between two souls. While new to officiating weddings, she is far from new to helping people achieve their dreams. Brenda, Life Solutions Coach and Massage Therapist.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

      What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

      • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
      • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
      • Defining your career goals
      • Creating a plan for job searching
      • Improving networking strategies and skills
      • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
      • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
      • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

      Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

      • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
      • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
      • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
      • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
      • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
      • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
      • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.
