Don did a great job of removing historic stain glass windows, on time (really early working guy) and secured the windows for travel to a wood finisher.

George did a substantial amount of handyman work at my home i just bought. He is a very meticulous painter that doesnt miss spots or leave a mess. George can handle jobs as routine as mounting ceiling fans or hanging pictures or window shades, all the way up to stripping, sanding and staining natural wood stairs that were hidden underneath carpet. These turned out great thanks to George. George works quickly and wont stop until a job is done to your satisfaction. I highly recommend him and will use him again myself.

I had a number of carpentry jobs around the house exterior, mostly replacing window frames and a tricky soffit corner surround.Ray was punctual for the estimate and the workdays. All the agreed work was completed on time and best of all, his final bill was less than the estimate! I'd hire him again.

Thank you American decorating and granite pros We moved to long boat key nearly two years ago; unsure of who to use we found your company by accident. Your installer was working on a plantation shutter install and we had asked if he could adjust blind for us and he graciously came over and did this in just minets. But it turned out to be the owner Stephen; He gave us a card and then described his other buisness Granite pro's kitchen & bath We had estimates from several companies by this time but that little favor stuck in our mind. Well the end result was great and the cost was lowere then the other bids I saved at least $1000. My job took 8 weeks and that included order time. About 3 weeks of install included removing my tub, installing a custom glass door and great tile work. Ask any one at the long boat key club who has used American and Granite Pro's. Great job, competitive and creative. They cleaned up every 4 hours or so. Good idea. Thanks again Sincerely Evette C

Best Handyman EVER!! Wade showed up about five minutes early, took a two page “honey-do” list and blazed right through it inside of a day. It would have taken us weeks to accomplish what Wade did in a Saturday! Window blind installation, a new toilet seat, replaced tiles in the shower, hung eight pictures and a mirror, changed all of the drawer pulls in our kitchen, fixed our sticking closet door, caulked two windows, replaced our torn window screens, installed a towel rack and a new shower head in the guest bathroom, moved boxes into the attic and finally reset the leaf screens in our gutters that had blown out. This man works really hard and his rates are very reasonable. You can’t go wrong hiring him!

Dave did a great job replacing a window in our kitchen. He removed a 36 X 72 window and replaced it with a 36 X 36. To do this he had to block up the open space. On time, great communication from the time he came and gave me an estimate through completion. Would hire him again.

Absolutely exceeded expectations. Aaron from Gulfside doors was the last of four estimates, including an installer contractor for Home Depot. The previous three told me that what I wanted (french doors to replace old sliders) could not be done, without major demolition and rebuild of the exterior wall. The doors were not a normal size and slid into a deep pocket in the exterior wall. I didn't hold out much hope for getting this project done and when Aaron arrived I was quick to tell him that I doubted he'd be able to help. Nonsense he said. He took measurements and assured me they could do the job. Later that day my girlfriend and I met Aaron at their showroom in Clearwater where he showed us several options and made recommendations on what he thought would look best in the space. He provided a fair written estimate that did not change through the course of the job and there was no high pressure sales tactics. We left the store and a week later called to arrange the down payment (1/2 of the estimate) and schedule a final measuring. The doors had to be custom made because of the abnormal size. The installer and his helper showed up on a Saturday morning and worked for 10 hours straight to remove the old sliders and install the new french doors and side panels. Both were very polite, professional, and tolerant of my two curious dogs. Gulf Coast doors called me that Monday to arrange for the county inspector to sign off on the job. The inspector was quite impressed with the new addition as well. When closed, the doors block out all sounds from the outside, the blinds inside the window panes block the natural light when closed or highlight it when wanted, and the tempered glass even helps with dissipating the heat from the sun. From the outside, the doors add a touch of elegance to the pool area. It has been over a month since install, and to sum it up, this is may be the most satisfying home upgrade I have ever done. I would use Gulf Coast Doors again and have already recommended them to one impressed neighbor

First I want to say what an awesome personality Larry has! He came over right away when we called for estimate on a bunch of work we needed and wanted done. Within one day, he had all the work in detail including price and labor professionally printed to go over with my husband and I. We started with a small budget and worked on what was most important first. All of our windows needed replaced due to energy costs. Because our house was built so poorly, most of the work done was custom fit. Larry is a perfectionist and hardworking! He gutted our whole bathroom, plastered the walls and put drywall. He installed new bathroom fixtures and tub frame. Insulated walls. He offers amazing quality job for a low price. He enclosed a whole vertical window and got matching wood siding to make it look perfect and also fixed our awning that was rotting outside. Did electrical work for us. Was always on time and was here when he said he'd be. Very dedicated and can tell he loves what he does! Work shows! Have already referred him to many friends and family that are excited to hire him! Always has great ideas to improve the job and is very honest and very reasonable!! :-) very pleased!

He was very prompt and courteous. We had a small problem with one window which he corrected by replacing the window free of charge. In the end he painted my whole home, changed out all off my windows and cut my electric bill in half through some additional improvements I'm very happy I'd refer him to anybody

Chris has been an invaluable help to me in preparing my very old condo for resale. He installed mini blinds, a floor under my kitchen sink, window cranks, weather-stripping, and beautiful crown molding around my old kitchen cabinets which he also deep cleaned. They now look 500% better than they did. He was very knowledgeable and had excellent & creative suggestions for me. I recommend him highly!

I purchased new doors and windows from Healthy Homes America. I needed to replace the old ones with more energy efficient ones. Other than the fact that it took a little longer than I expected due to the fact that some of the windows were special order everything else went well. Everything looks great and I am glad I took their suggestion to also add more attic insulation. My electric bill has gone down and my house is more comfortable.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
