Michael has been my golf instructor for about 4 months now. He has a relaxed teaching style that he adapts to each individual student [I've been in some group lessons]. I've been playing golf for nearly 40 years, and we're changing most everything about the way I play the game. Michael is very patient and very positive in the way he teaches. And he's always on time which demonstrates he respects others. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to improve their golf game while enjoying the process.

James is the best golf instructor I have ever had. He is extremely patient and gives a student a lot of confidence. He has the ability to work with a student's limitations (mental and physical). James really cares about his students and takes pride in their successes and always offers encouragement when there are disappointments. James is also very knowledgeable about every aspect of the game of golf and uses the latest equipment to analyze his student's swing and to give instant feedback.

Scott has been great to work with in helping me with my swing. I have taken 2 lessons with him and can already tell the difference, so I signed up for 3 more to have a total of 5 lessons for a great value. He has an app that films your swing and is good at pinpointing what you need help on which is really cool. One thing that I appreciate is his promptness in communicating. We have been rained out multiple times but he has always given me a heads up and been great at rescheduling. If you are looking for a golf pro to help you fix your swing, I would highly recommend Scott.

I had never played golf before and had such a great experience with Tim. Not only is he knowledgeable but he is patient, and made me feel very comfortable. I learned so much about the game of golf and each lesson was right on the golf course at different holes. In only 6 lessons I can now chip, putt and drive which is such an accomplishment considering I had never even swung a golf club before. I am now ready to play 18 holes with my boyfriend...for fun, of course. I highly recommend Tim for golf lessons and I will continue to have him help me with my game in the future.

Being a higher-handicapper, I was concerned about taking a golf lesson that was too "technical" or over my head. My golf lesson with Brad was neither. He kept everything very simple and I hit shots that I did not know that I could hit. While taking the time to get to know me at the beginning of the lesson, Brad realized that I was a visual learner. This allowed him to better communicate what he wanted me to do. Definitely have found the right golf coach for me and I can't wait to play with my husband!

I have been told throughout my life that I would make a great teacher and golf has always been my passion. I am so grateful to be able to make a living doing what I truly love to do. The smile on the person's face when they tell me they just shot their lowest score ever is what makes it all worthwhile. A bonus is that I don't ever have to wear a suit and tie to work.

I am a PGA teaching professional with 33 years of experience. Was selected by the PGA of America as the junior leader of the year for 2013 and 2005. I love to help my students understand and learn about there golf games

I have many satisfied students. Dad has private 9-hole course. I really love the game and have the patience to work with all levels of students from beginner to scratch. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.
