William Silver says, "Laura it looks like you and I are having the same experience. I paid more to have it completed fast. That's a joke. It has now been with Engineer for 4 weeks, This is after they said oh go ahead and pay it will be done by Friday. I gave them 2 projects, they are failing on both right now. They will be getting another review on that project if I do not have it as well. I got truss drawing done. How do you have truss drawing completed properly without having ceiling heights on the drawings? Rhetorical, you can't if the ceiling heights change. How can you put windows on the face of the house if you have trusses there? Again rhetorical. I have had maybe 2 changes on one of the projects, many corrections but Lucas calls those changes and are not his fault. ok add a week for an hour change. Its coming up on 5 full months on a remodel and a house in which I gave them the base plans. I will have someone else explain that debacle on the next post. I will also add the drawings and if they allow it transcript of taped conversations.Laura I met with them in the office a week or so ago and they were terrific and met all my needs. Even though I could kick Kyle's butt in golf he's Ok. Lucas as well was helpful in the completion of my drawings. So in short Laura, go to the office as nothing clears up misunderstandings as a face to face."See more

Funke.Architects, founded in 2004, is a collaborative enterprise providing full services in architecture, master planning and interior design. The intention is to offer a gamut of capabilities (ensuring the continuity of the design process from concept to construction and) enabling the comprehensive (unilateral) control of the quality of our built product. The practice is propelled by an approach to design that is (predicated on responsiveness) responsive to the specifics of context and function and thus precludes any preconceived style. (The office operates under the notion that design draws strength from an integration of disciplines and knowledge bases which inform the process at different levels.) The result is a portfolio of work that is diverse both formally and conceptually. Funke.Architects draws on an extensive range of architectural and construction experience spanning many project types and scales. The practice is young and vehement in its pursuit of formulating and executing innovative design solutions.See more

Great value

Beth C. says, "Nicole is great! I hired her for color consulting. I live in a 1998 Tucson era home which has bossy countertops, travertine floors, arched doorways and a 2 story wall with 7 niches! I have been going crazy since I’ve lived here (5 yrs) trying to figure out how to pull all this together! I didn’t succeed! AT ALL! I contacted Nicole and she had an open appointment that day by chance! (Which was awesome! Because I was at my wits end trying to do something again!) Nicole walked in and new exactly what colors would bring the house together and give it the cohesive look I do despartly wanted! She has worked with a lot of clients that have had the same problem as I did. She showed me pictures of some of her work with these Tucson era homes and they looked beautiful! She really cares about my concerns and frustrations and truly understands them and addresses them one by one! She has been so patient with me and my overwhelming need to fix it all “right now”! She is so generous with her time and talent and has given me ideas to change a few things to help “unbusy” the wall of niches! She is very budget conscious and has found solutions for me that have been attainable! I have texted her with questions and she is very responsive. The color consulting included even furnishings! I know my project was small, but nevertheless, she treats me as if I had a million dollar project going on! She has a business to run and make successful and it feels good that my small project is just as important to her as her clients that are doing major renovations! I would have picked value and punctuality also but the app only allows 3. Give Nicole a call! You will not be disappointed! Big project or small you will always have her full efforts and attention to bring harmony to your home! Thanks Nicole your the best! ( photos coming when it’s all put together!)"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

What do house plans consist of?

In a house plan, you can expect to see an overview of the construction site, floor plans, roof plans, foundation plans, electrical plans, exterior elevation and more. Always ask your architect what they plan to include in your house plan.
